The joy of reading to your kids

As part of our "Summer Nights" series at The Observer, I wrote a column about reading at night -- either to your kids or alone. We were reading the "Swiss Family Robinson" here and have now moved on to "To Kill a Mockingbird."

I know a lot of yall read to your kids and/or enjoyed having someone read to you as a child -- today I just want to gently nag you to do so a little more. The wonder of a good story is that, even today with all the electronic distractions kids face, it can still entertain them like nothing else.

Here's the column I wrote about "The Joy of Reading" today, as I took a one-day break from my normal sports fare.

Why is this in the Panthers section? Or even in the sports section? I believe more & more that you are losing your ability to write & therefore you will write any nonsense that pops into your mind. Whats the next article from you, have sing alongs in your car?

I think the next article should be instructions on how to play patty cake with your infants.

Well Anonymous, learn from this story and read the Sports Section to your children, niece, nephew, or god-children. This is a subtle way of saying Sports are not more important than your children, but spending time with them might develop a better athlete and attitude. Use your mind to look deeper into a blog or article or in this case a suggested reading.

Main thought, this was part of Summer Series and only a suggested read. I disagree with Scott often, but your comments I disagree with fully.

I also print my name when I disagree with Scott.

Do you think the sports section is going to entertain children? This isnt any subtle way of saying anything other than he doesnt have a clue what to write about & needs to be fired. This is the sports section, not the how to raise your kids section. You are a moron and the first comments were right. And i will post my name to this comment so you know who wrote it. When i click on the PANTHERS section of SPORTS, i dont want to read about how he chooses to raise his kids.

Actually, this wasn't a sports story and wasn't labeled as such in the newspaper. It ran on the newspaper's front page, as part of the newspaper's "Summer Nights" series.

And to "Anonymous 6:37 p.m.," thanks for the idea on patty cake. That's a winner! I'll try it soon. (haha)

I thought the article was GREAT! Wonderful that it came from Scott as it might encourage more dads to read with their kids -- boys are more likely to drop off in reading than girls. Dads setting an example for their kids couldn't hurt!

I really miss doing this. My kids now are teenagers and I miss reading them something especially bedtime stories before going to sleep.

I think this is a great article and challenge to men. Kids, especially boys, need male reader role models. If you read to your kids, hop on over to realmenreadwithkids.wordpress.com and let us know about it. If you don't, there are some great tips on how to get started at that same site. And don't stop reading with them when they become teens. Find a way to share some kind of reading/listening - sports pages, audiobooks, websites, anything that interests them.
