To spice up another one of those lo-o-o-ng preseason weeks, let me point out to you that FoxSports.com just named Panthers coach John Fox No.1 on its "hot-seat" coaching list for 2010. Fox, as we all know, is going into his ninth year with the Panthers but also is in the last year of his contract. It's quite likely he will be coaching elsewhere in 2011 -- either by his choice or by the Panthers' choice.
Here's the link to the story, but if you want the short version read below. In my opinion this is a pretty good 8-coach list, although I would have inserted Dallas's Wade Phillips on there somewhere in the Top 5:
1. John Fox, Panthers. (Comment from FoxSports' Adrian Hasenmayer: "Head coaches like authority and power. Head coaches without a long contract sometimes struggle to lead and enforce their necessary juice. John Fox has that obstacle heading into 2010, as his deal lasts only through 2010 as the Panthers come off a disappointing 8-8 season. Fox has led the Panthers to just three winning records in eight years, though in all three Carolina won division titles." NOTE FROM SCOTT: Thanks to an alert reader for pointing out Hasenmayer's comment is incorrect -- the Panthers were actually a wild-card team in 2005. Makes you wonder a bit about the level of research that actually went into this list, doesn't it?)
The other 7 on the "hot seat," in order of how sizzling that seat is:
2. Tom Coughlin, N.Y. Giants
3. Eric Mangini, Cleveland
4. Jack Del Rio, Jacksonville
5. Marvin Lewis, Cincinnati
6. Lovie Smith, Chicago
7. Tom Cable, Oakland
8. Steve Spagnuolo, St. Louis

With Richardson going cheap this year (even if they deny it) Fox will have his hands full. I see about 5 or 6 wins this year. Anything more will totally blow me away.
Actually, it's only 2 division titles - 2005 was a wild card year
Oh wow, the season hasn't started and im hearing these silly predictions. How about wait and see what happens.
Fox has been a problem for 3 years. He should have been fired long ago. It makes me sick to think of how good we would have been had it not been for the clown as our head coach. And despite what the local writers believe, there is no market for this man in the NFL as a head coach. His antiquated approach is boring to watch, and is ineffective. MOVE ON FOX!!!! 3-16 this year, at best.
I'm glad you'll be blown away if they get 7 wins.
Hot seat? How about no seat? He's not going to be back regardless.
I agree he is on the hot seat, especially without a contract beyond this season, but I don't think he is #1. I would bet my house that Eric Mangini and Jack Del Rio will be out before he is.
I also don't agree with Marvin Lewis, this year, or Steve Spagnuolo. It will be hard to find someone to take the Oakland job, so I think Cable is safe for now too. I think Raheem Morris won't be in Tampa after this year either.
Fox will be hire within 24 hours, if people like him or not. I didn't know we play 19 games a year btw, 3-16 record. Wow i must be learning something new. Because I thought each and every team plays 16 games a year, plus 3-4 post-seasons games. Who will coach this team btw? I mean nobody didn't want to coach a laughing stock team after a 1-15 record in the 2001 season. At least Fox/Hurney took their time rebuilding a good team with potential studs/core players intact.
WE need to keep fox if we cannot get Cowher. You keep Fox he has turned over the roster and is preaching his phrases to a whole new team like the Eagles. You have to give him more time with a whole new team and so little money to work with.
When you have ZERO support from upper management on putting a good team together, he is probably cheering this #1 rank. I would be.
I've liked Fox the best of all the coaches we've had over the years. Opie never showed any emotion. Seifert never showed any interest. Fox showed some occasional results but was too inconsistent. At least he acted like he wanted to be there.
I'm sorry he needs to go but I expect we'll see another man in his spot next year.
Fox needs to stay. He's the best coach we've ever had and there's not anyone available who's any better.
DUMP-FEAUX:
Clearly you know a lot about football... they only play 16 games so 3-16 will be tough. And while I agree it might be time for a change in Carolina... Fox will have work quickly, mark my words.
I don't see Fox going anywhere. He does make the most out of nothing better than a lot of other coaches. Getting 2 8 wins last year was a miracle. Mr. Richardson realizes there will b a lockout next year so there will be plenty of time for this 2 settle.
Fox stayed with Jake 6 games too long at year. That mistake may cost him his job... Que Bill Cowher...
Actually, I expect several teams to compete for Fox to be their coach next year.
People might as well call Bill C the "savior". 14 years to win a SB. Knowing how impatient this fan base is. Wouldn't be surprise if i start hearing complaints. I mean, where was he to be found when the Panthers went 1-15 after the 2001 season? To bad nobody appreciate what Fox/Hurney had done. To rebuild a laughing stock team. When no top HCs wanted to even consider coaching the team at the time. Luckly when Fox leaves, whoever the next HC is. Don't have to make many changes.
John Fox will be the most sought-after coach in the NFL next year.
it looks like gruden could be our next head coach. he's been sucking up to JR for two years now.
John Fox will be going to NY to replace Coughlin.
Fox is one of the better coaches in the NFL, and the Panthers know it. He will sign a new contract this season provided he wins 6 games with all the rookies they just let him draft. If he leaves it will be a sad day for the Panthers and the offers will begin rolling in within minutes of the announcement.

BINGO! Give the boy a candy cigar!!!
As soon as Bill Cowher simply stepped away from the Steelers - in order to avoid any previous contractual issues over possibly taking another ... WAIT, WAIT!!! I meant to type ... "to spend more time with his wife and family!!!! ...... and then they moved back to the white Raleigh suburbia, soccer-mom / NC State area ... well, John Fox would have to be a total FOOL *not* to see a gigantic Cowher-shaped shadow sneaking up on his job. Here. In Charlotte.
I was gonna write that J.F. should be "Cowher-ing in fear" for his job but y'all would boo me worse than you've booed the pathetic, under-performing Panthers ...
Fox already knows he's done like dinner. Take this to the bank: Jerry Richardson already has "the hook" in his hand ........
Be careful for what you wish for everyone... Fox is still a top tier coach. Since the Big Cat has very little to do with the media, this is all pure speculation on Fox's part.
If Cowher or Gruden had became head coach of the Panthers. Imagine how much media coverage would get each and every week/year. Probably being mention as contenders, since they love Cowher/Gruden.
fox sports
fox news
small credibility gap
It's that broken down stadium thats causing all the problems. Just read about how the Marlins screwed everyone in South Florida. Look out Charlotte, you're next!
I like fox, but if he does go, i would love to see gruden. I hated his guts in tampa but i love him on espn. big cat plays it so close to the vest, don't be suprised if fox's agent is already working on an extension. if we start the regular season and this isn't resolved it will be a big distraction. and we are usually pretty good about avoiding that kind of mess.
Fox to NY after the season to replace Coughlin? Ye Gads where do you people come up with such fantasy?
If Fox is sent packing, my money would be on Gruden, because no one else on Earth would want the job. Everyone on Earth outside our borders harbors some God-only-knows-why hatred for all things Carolina. Not a single national media outlet covers us (witness the obvious error about Fox having 3 division titles, and ESPN spending exactly 30 seconds of the pre-game show talking Panthers before the Ravens game), all officials have some sort of vendetta against us (tons of bogus calls against us already), and when our name does come up on a national program, it's just to bash us (like Sam Wyche of NFL Network predicting we would be the third-worst team in the NFL).
So y'all had better hope that Fox gets an extension, or you're going to be left with Bill Geiler or Mike Newsome as the Panthers coach.
BTW, my top 8 would be, in order of hotness of the seat:
1) Mangini
2) Del Rio
3) Wade Phillips
4) Chan Gailey
5) Caughlin
6) Smith
7) Raheem Morris
8) Gary Kubiak
Can you believe some of these idiots still blame Jake? They still blame Shinn and whine about him. waaaaaaaaaa These azzholioz are hopeless. Go check your mirror. There is your real problem.
They always second guess the owner, the coach, and everything else. You cant please these punks. They even whined about the Bobcat colors for yrs.
Time to clean house and tell whiny fans to shut the hell up. There are no bigger whiners on the planet than what the Panthers have to deal with in spite of sucking so bad.
They all came out of their mammy whining as a baby and never stopped crying heming and hawing moaning and groaning bitching and farting about everything.
Thankless ungrateful arrogant fans.
Now its a broken down 15 yr old 300 million dollar stadium to blame ?
Time for the wrecking ball ...
Richardson should just go ahead and take that multi billion dollar offer in cash to move lock stock and barrell to Los Angeles.
That will def shat up the whiners.
You silly people. Cowher has already said he WILL NOT be coaching next year.
Wow its always something with some people. In the past it was "Imagine how good we could be if Jake wasn't the QB" or "If we just had a new OC or a DC". Come on people...how many people remember being a Panthers fan before John Fox? Who wants to go back to 1-15. I will take 8-8 over 1-15 any day of the week. Sure you can have your own opinion about how things are. Thats the great thing about being in America. But seriously, stop complaining and leave the coaching and decision making to the professionals and just enjoy watching your favorite team play.
i,have heard never say never about coaching.
YOU ARE ALL CRAZY!!! if you think firing Fox is a good idea... CRAZY! Fox is the BEST coach we EVER had... and he haves GREAT class and style... AND FIY!!! getting Cowher is the DUMBEST thing I have ever heard.. you people make me laugh... Cowher!! ha ha SEE, there I go again..
WTH! Does best coach we have ever had have to do with now?
So was Dom Capers at one time.
I feel sure Fox will get a job right away, but will travel the same path as Capers. Fox is a good coach just not a good head coach and the fact he is nice and a "Stand up Guy", has nothing to do with it. His Philosophy is dated.
After the crap last season when we all know Jake was killing our season, Fox said "Jake gives us the best chance to win". Obviously that was a load. We are starting Moore this season. Enough there, fox should be gone.
We are very, very lucky to have had John Fox here for 9 years. The staff loves him, the players respect him, he is polite and considerate to fans, and he is a pleasure to work with. He goes way above and beyond to represent this community and this organization so well. John Fox is a man of very high character and integrity, which is extremely unusual in professional sports. I had the high honor of working with him all of his years in Charlotte and admire him greatly for the kind of man he is. People should be more thoughtful and careful before they speak so strongly about people they don't know. I wish him and our team the very best this season.
All coaches are on the the hot seat yearly especially when they are losing.
I think they went too new and should have kept a few good players.
I think Fox will be here if Fox wants to stay. The reason why is because unlike most of you idiots called Panthers fans I do see this team winning this year. I will be shocked if this isn't a playoff team barring a crazy rash of injuries like in 04 or 06. We have a ton of talent and the defense looks like it might be legit. That was the big worry coming into this year wasn't it? This team hasn't shown much in the preseason because it is the preseason. settle down and watch the Panthers work some magic in 2010.
I still think this is the only job Bill Cowher wants and he will most likely get it, in my opinion. Fox will certainly be swooped up by the Giants. They love him. I'm sure Jon Gruden and Brian Billick will be coaching again next year as well. My guess is..
Jacksonville -> Brian Billick
Tampa Bay -> Tom Coughlin
NY Giants -> John Fox (and please go back to the uniforms worn in the 80's and 90's)
Carolina -> Bill Cowher
Cleveland -> Jon Gruden (due to his ties to Mike Holmgren and being an Ohio native and grew up a Browns fan)
Denver -> Mike Zimmer (he will be a headcoach somewhere in the next two years. Denver should get him while they can and dump Josh McDaniels)
John Fox IS a very good coach and I don't think many Panther fans would disagree with that. However, it may be best for both parties if the Panthers let him move on to another team, i.e. the Giants. Bill Cowher can come in and bring in one of his former OC's. I'm not terribly impressed with Jeff Davidson. He is better than Dan Henning, but the Panthers can find someone better.
Fox has made too many bad decisions: going with Jake too long, going with Deshaun Foster over Williams, not riding Peppers on his work ethic. Heck even his replay challenges are questionable. He is not a bad coach, but he is not a great one either.
yes time for the jaw..cowher power
Remember Fox took the Panthers to the Super Bowl.
Gruden, Cowher, etc. cannot win games without premium players.
The person who should be in the "Hot Seat" should be the person controlling the purse strings.
I thought Bill Cowher wasn't coaching next year. What elite offense did Cowher have with the Steelers? I mean run 1st, pass 2nd, and play good defense. Sounds just like Fox. What excitement will we see out of that? I want a offensive guru of a HC, just like Shawn P from the Saints. Can have more options besides Smith, Williams, and Stweart.
I can see MUST of you are old Steelers fans.... yakees to I bet.. lol COWHER SUCKS way more than Fox...
Now is the time to make the change at coach, fresh young group.
Definitely a different approach to football ,rather than the SAME PAST 3 Coaches.
Fox will be a coach next year...in the NFC East..either NY or Dallas
Actually, Fox’s seat no longer is hot. Owner Jerry Richardson sealed Fox’s fate by making it known that Fox would be returning for the final year of his contract, but that the ninth-year head coach wouldn’t be getting an extension. Speculation promptly ensued regarding a possible negotiated buyout. With only a handful of jobs opening up, Fox opted to defer his job search for a year.
As long as he remains employed, a chance exists that he’ll stay put for 2011 and beyond. It’ll take a great season, with a playoff berth and advancement at least to the division round, and possibly more than that.
He has put us in the playoffs ONLY 3 times during his 8 years here.....THREE!!!
He has got to go....
John Fox will only be let go if we have a five-win-or-less season. He is a decent coach, grounded by front office fools who won't pay for talent and can't pick a winning horse to save their lives.
We fans also share some blame here. What a bunch of fair-weather fools. Every coach is an idiot and every season is going to suck. Get over yourselves. How many of you are season ticket holders anyway? I wish I could AFFORD to be as cynical as y'all. Sit back and enjoy. Maybe then you can judge.
Jerry Richarson would be insane to let coach Fox get away. He actually made chicken soup out of chicken crap for the past two seasons.
I wish you all had posted with your names so we could all see who is in favor of Fox staying, who thinks he sicks, & who thinks they can name the replacement or who they think should be the replacement. Myself i like Fox as a coach & think he has done a great job taking them to the playoffs 3 times. How many teams havent been to the playoffs once even since the Panthers have been around? & how many never won an nfc (or afc if thats their conference) tile? Thats enough for me to think he is a good coach & i cant name anyone thats available i think might do better.

I agree with the above statement 100%. Once you guys lose Fox and have a subpar replacement, you'll be saying " I wish we would have kept him". The grass always looks greener on the other side. I like John Fox but if I did have to pick a replacement, it would be Gruden and not Chin Man! The problem ids the front office, I still say it is Danny boy who was hired last year. (Morrison)
To bad John Fox is rated #1 like FOX news/sports except the opposite...he's AWFUL!..check the news ratings Fox has been #1 for years...news that is!
@ MR BERNZ...you are on black tar heroin! if he had M.Vick thay would be the two most OVERATED player/coach of all time!...as i remember ole' "Foxy" kept he dead arm son Jake in about 2 games too long last year ,which kept us OUT of the playoffs...I case you don't know how to rate Head coaches...they are better than 3 times in the POST season in 8 yrs bub~!
2yrs to late!..we can fed-ex him to the meadowlands if the NYG will fill Cowhers gas-tank to Charlotte from Raleigh!
OMG Fox's family is on here proping him up...in 8trs his record should be made it 5yrs missed 3yrs...NOT the 3-5 he has...see ya Johnny! maybe you will learn to gameplan on your next job!
your stats on consistantcy of Bill Cowher are wrong he went 6 straight yrs ,and 4 of 6 yrs and made it to the playoffs 10 of 15 seasons with a win % of .623 waaay better than Fox who has'nt been 2 straight it's not close and I hope he is our coach after Fox is gone this year.

That's about right Fox and co. has never been to the playoffs 2 in a row!!!
I totally disagree with this assessment. John Fox is one of the best coaches in the league. If the Panthers dump him, he will pick up a head coaching gig in a heartbeat. Sometimes the offense is boring. Sometimes the special teams are underperforming. We still have always had great defensive teams. We are just a couple of players away from deep playoffs. Give Coach Fox a break.
FREE THE FOX ,FREE THE FOX ,FREE THE FOX ,FREE THE FOX ,FREE THE FOX...PLEASE ,PLEASE FREE THE FOX!
Uhh! you might think he could have found the players by now!..if he benched Gohomme he might not be on the "hotseat" there Bernze!
+1 THIS!!!
Like i said, how many teams havent won their division since Fox has been coach. How many teams havent won their conference since Fox has been coach. How many teams havent even made a wild card since Fox has been a coach. & so far as i know of, Cowher hasnt said he will coach at all, or coach the Panthers so its a little bit premature to say he will. My guess is he wont want to coach for a couple of years while he adjusts to the loss of his wife. God bless her.

all of you Steeler fans should quit posting here. We know where you sit when a Steeler's game is on TV. Go ahead and watch your psycho QB win and leave Panther's talk to their fans.
are panthers fans really surprised? John Fox SHOULD be fired after this year, which isn't looking promising. The blunders of last year were squarely on his shoulders. I do think Fox is a pretty good coach, just he isnt getting it done here in Carolina.
Fox on the Run. One can only hope after this year, the ONLY Fox associated with Charlotte will be 99.7
Personally, I say give Steve Spurrier another chance. He knows this area and is an offensive genuis
I really hope Fox sticks with the Panthers well after this season. He is a great coach and does very well with the talent he has. Many of you want Bill Cowher as the next coach, but it did take him a very long time to win a super bowl and I would have to say that the division that the Steelers play in year in and year out is a lot weaker than the NFC South. The NFC South has been extremely competitive since its inception and Fox has done a great job coaching against it. Its not like the Panthers have had woeful seasons when we haven't been to the playoffs with Fox, They almost always seem to be on the cusp of a playoff berth. He is a great coach, we should stick with him because he'll get us back to the playoffs again, and I believe after all is said and done, he'll stay on as the head coach of the panthers.
A "great" coach(fox) how? This is to everyone who has said it...
This is the thing as the years have past more and more film on the panthers for everyone to study, the panthers are so predictable. Just about all of know what we are going to do on 1st thru 3rd down depending on the distance. So here comes foxs one of his favorite words "Execute". SO our guys are already at a disadvantage, because they have a GOOD idea what we are going to run. There is no strategy, no element of surprise. It is 100% executed everytime or it is 3 and out.
This is why Fox Ball is Finished. He is not aggressive and this day of football its not about always taking what they give and bend don't break defense.
You go out there and punch them in the mouth, don't stand on the sideline and clap!!
"THEY" meaning the opponent.
Lmao, if Fox isn't an aggressive HC. What makes Bill Cowher an aggressive head coach? Runs 1st, pass 2nd, and play good defense. When Fox was playing aggressive, it cause them the super bowl in 2003. Going for an extra 2 points when they even lead/tried to extend leads. Bill C didn't even stated he was going to coach again.
Did I say anything about Bill C.(LMAO). I don't think he is the answer, but he is about punching you in the mouth first! Not clapping!
Anonymous 10:22
What is Fox going to do High percentage of the time on 1st down and 3rd down and 3rd and anything. Not a paticular play IDIOT. Really you read that, as the other team knowing the exact play?????
You are part of the high percentage out that wants to keep fox and doesn't get it.
What are the Pats going to do on first down or 3rd & anything? Any fan that knows their team is going to know what their strengths are moron and the teams work to their strengths.
Seriously.
ok you got me...
I have to agree, there is no reason teams cant game plan & kind of know what to expect the other team to do on their play calls. The hard thing is stopping the calls they know will happen. Like with Williams & Stewart running the ball, teams know theyre going to run it & still cant stop them most of the times.
It's pretty well known amoung other D-coordinators for years now...you double 89 play 7-8 in the box with bump and run on the other wr's and TE and The Panthers are vunerable...until they get a WR that pulls doubles or tight man off 89 this ain't gonna change! and you THINK in a QB driven league Fox is going to adapt...puhlease! Carolina is a MUCH bigger threat to score running 3wr's and single back set...why? = more room bewteen the sticks...If you run 2wr/2backs and a slow TE all the defenders are inside the sticks and can run more blitz schemes because the LB's and S are playin run or slant or similar coverage...not to hard to figure!
Maybe you should apply for the job next season. I didnt know the Panthers fans were so in the loop with the other defensive coordinators. I am surprized the Panthers can ever score since the other teams know them so well.
so mrbernz is the fan above right or wrong??
Analysts have been saying this very thing for 3 or more years.
If all the other defense coordinators & coaches know what the Panthers are going to do & how to stop them so well how is it the Panthers have had winning seasons ever? How is it the Panthers made it to the playoffs the year b4 last? Analysts said they all know how to stop the Panthers so that makes it true huh? How many analysts predicted the Saints to win the superbowl last year? & Yes that was me above, i am the 1 posting not anonymously. Well, 1 of the few anyway.
Oh i read that question wrong, I thought you was asking if that was me posting, you were asking me if the guy b4 was right or wrong. Okay he is wrong. Like i said before, if they knew how to stop the Panthers how would the Panthers have gone 12-4 the year before last?Or even 8-8 last year? How did the Panthers beat the Giants last year in their final home game? How did the Panthers beat the Vikings last year? Obviously teams dont knwo how to stop the Panthers, or they know how & just cant do it.
