My colleague Tom Sorensen suggests that the Carolina Panthers pick up the newly available Randy Moss off waivers, since Minnesota just decided (again) Moss wasn't worth the trouble after trading to get him (again) several weeks ago.
I totally disagree. I think Moss would be little help to this Carolina team. I think he would disrupt the development of Carolina's young wide receivers, would run after the ball only when he wanted to and would end up imploding here.
I'm certainly all for spending some of tight-fisted Jerry Richardson's money, but this isn't the way I'd do it. These Panthers are too far gone. Moss wouldn't save them. A signing like that would give Tom and I something to write about, yes, but that's about all. Moss is mostly washed up, and he's a bad influence in a locker room, and that's not something the Panthers should be going after right now.
If you want to chat about this or anything else, incidentally, and you happen to read this blog post soon, I'm going to be chatting live with readers online at CharlotteObserver.com from noon to 1 p.m. today (Tuesday).

For real Scott? How can this be a bad move? The locker room is already toast. Burnt black toast. There is ZERO hope in that room. This can only be a good thing.
Agreed, but at least he would command a defender to cover him, which would be one less to stop the run.
Moss is a proven receiver in this league. The Panthers don't like proven players. They like to invent them. Case in point, Armanti Edwards. You know what I mean! Sorry team in a one newspaper town! Great combination for a sports team. Go Panthers!
bringing in moss might help these young guys adjust to the speed of the nfl. i remember seeing keyshawn in training camp going up against gamble, he came off the ball, hit gamble, put a quick move on him and was wide open in a matter of seconds. moss has that ability, maybe even more. bring him in, let the young guys watch and learn cause they definitely arent learning anything from the other problem receiver we have
Has anyone scene or heard anything from Marty Hurney in a while? Where has he been hiding these days? Is it true Marty Hurney is getting out of the office more during the week so he doesn't have to wade in the crap he put together. They say he is out scouting college campuses is this true? JR isn't going to let him oversee this upcoming draft is he?
Marty Hurney hasn't been a bad GM. You are an absolute moron if you believe that.
The problem is not TALENT it is coaching.
Funny how mostly every Hurney basher want to blame him for this product.
As I recall JR was or is making the personell decision of going in a salary dump/youth movement.
The finger pointing should go on JR, instead of Hurney. Not being able to extend the contracts of Beason, Kalil, Williams, and others.
Better hope theirs a lockout in 2011. What a waist of a year it would be.
If Hurney is such as bad GM, name a GM who should take his place. Matt Millen, lmfao.
Only GM I would take over anybody is Bill P and Marty S as the team president.
well we definitely dont need a new president, we got some wingnut from TCU to head up that train wreck for us. but hey, its going well, i heard he goes up to fans at tailgates and actually has a bite of what their cooking. i guess he cant even afford to eat inside BOA stadium
How about Steve Keim? He lives in North Carolina.
Let Moss come in this year.. It will be a contact through the end of the year, he really can't screw up this season any more than it already is. As far as this season is concerned, I only see upside to adding Moss. If he truly is a locker room problem, we can try to waiver him off again.
Somebody should contact Steve Verderosa with the NY Giants! He's been in the business a very long time and has never gotten the oppourtunity. He's probably knows more than a lot of these GM's that are already in place. He's been passed over because of the strong push by the League Office for teams to hire more minorities in their front office positions.
Moss isn't going to resign with this team after this season, even if they do claim him off waviers.
Basically he would be a 9 game rental, before being let go again. Unless they sign a motivated Moss, then i'm down with the signing.
The new coaching staff would like Moss and Smith, the lack of talent isn't the problem.
It's the coaching of no game planning/making the right adjustments to set players up for success.
Both Jerry Richardson and Marty Hurney are a flaming cowards for not standing up and addressing the media about the Panther's current state of affairs.
I take Steve Verderosa over Dan G anyday, especially when it comes down to evaluating QB's and WR's.
Thats the only 2 problems Dan G and Hurney seems to not find. Keeping the team underachieve(mainly Fox vanilla philosophy).
You mean JR is a coward to stand in front of the media to address the team direction.
Since JR wanted to go into this youth movement/salary dump. What the hell does Hurney suppose to say?
He is working with a stupid owner, who once spend money to improve the team. To all of a sudden go cheap in a uncapped year?
He would be fired, I wish Bill Polian was back here. Who is a HOF Gm, building 3 teams to title contender while there. Bills, Panthers, and Colts.
I take him or Marty S over Hurney in a second.
I totally disagree with Scott and agree with Tom. Moss would be a great addition. As some other posters have said, the locker room is already pretty morose, the team down and dejected. But Fox hasn't lost control of it the way Childers has in Minnisota. And you have to think Randy would come in willing to work and behave after all this.
If Moss is in the lineup, somebody and probably two somebodies have to play him, at least one a deep safety who can't support against the run. Couple that with Smith on the other side and now you've opened up some running lanes. And Moore has the arm to throw it deep if either guy is single covered.
Then you've got the intangible consideration of energizing the fan base because we're on a one-way ticket to TV blackouts, and that's called the flush cycle, my friends.
Sign him! It's the right thing to do.
I think signing Johnny Unitas would help us more at this point... and he's dead.
I would take Charley Casserley over all of them! He was run out of Houston but did get that #1 pick right when it was all said and done. He's as solid as they come! He would probably turn it down because he knows which organizations will spend the money and which ones don't like to spend money. The Panthers are one that doesn't like to spend the money. Just ask the Richardson sons.
Turn out the Lights, this party has been over since last season! All good things must come to an end! I'm moving to another city!
I would absolutely love for Moss to come here. Problem is, he would never agree to come here. You want a motivated Moss? He's motivated by money. Anything less than being one of the top 5 paid WRs isn't enough for him. And we all know JR isn't about to spend that kind of money. Plus, you have him pining away to be back in New England. So I don't see it happening.
As for Fowler's reasons not to sign Moss, they're all off base. Impede the development of the Panthers young WRs? What development? Aside from 1 game from 1 of them, none of the 3 of them has produced squat. Mostly washed up? Hardly. He didn't do much in Minnesota because he was playing with The Ultimate Diva at QB who thinks the universe revolves around him.
Charley Casserly over Bill P and Marty S? Tough call, but he no longer wants to return to the nfl.
Once he left the Redskins to go to the Texans, he drafted bust players in David Carr, Jabar Gaffney, Chester Pitts, and Fred Weary.
Before drafting : Andre Johnson (WR, 2003), Jerome Mathis (KR, 2005), DeMeco Ryans (LB, 2006), Mario Williams (DE, 2006) and Owen Daniels (TE 2006).
But had his fair share of
was criticism for a number of personnel moves, including trading second and third round picks to the Oakland Raiders for Phillip Buchanon in 2005.[6] Buchanon was a poor player for the Texans in 2005, and was released by the team after the first four games of the 2006 season.[7] In a public interview, McNair criticized the trade for Buchanon, saying that the front office had not done its homework.[8]
So he's out the picture, Bill P or Marty S I would take right now if open.
Funny how fans in general expect a rookie receiver or player to become a All Pro/Pro bowl player overnight.
It takes time for any player to adjust to the nfl. But hopefully with a new coaching staff, they will be develop the right way.
Amen to michael bacon. Johnny U would be an improvement. I know he is no longer vertical but neither is Matt Moore. He is always on his butt looking out the ear hole of his helmet.
NO NO and NO
What are the benefits to signing RM for the remainder of the games?
1) To teach our young WR's to play when they WANT to play?
2) To quit on plays, when the ball is actually falling into your hands for a TD pass?
3) To shake up our locker room with drama that we alreay have enough of?
4) Pay a player that says he isnt motivated so we can feel better about not having JP here to bitch about taking off plays?
Seriously....if its something for the sake of writing about, or because most feed off drama, RM has made it very clear with TWO teams this season its WHAT he WANTS to do WHEN he WANTS to do it...
That helps us HOW? Because if you think he wasnt motivated with those two contenders, what the hell in Carolina is gonna motivate him?
Welcome to the "CIRCUS" if he does roll into town!!!

Ps....Now this was funny <:-)
Just saying!!
I live in Texas for the last 4 years and as such don't get to watch Panthers play on TV at all the last few years (maybe 2 games in 2008, the Giants game Sunday night and the playoff against Arizona). Its Cowboy nation here with Some Houston Texans thrown in.
Strangely, this year when they are so crappy, I got so see 3 games live (Giants, Saints and Bears games) and 1 more lined up for this Sunday, the second game against Saints. Weird, huh?
Most times I don't agree with Scott, but today I do. Moss would not be a good fit in this city or in this situation for the reasons Scott gives. Randy Moss, or any other highly disruptive, self centered individual in that locker room would be the Molotov cocktail to totally blow things apart.
I don't know...I guess I tend to be of the opinion that at this point, why not? Things can't possibly be any worse. Like Matt and Archiguy said at least opposing defenses would be FORCED to cover him (regardless of if you think he takes plays off or not). Jen, I think it ties perfectly to your point comparing him to JP - again, regardless of if anyone thinks JP took plays off you know that the opposing team at least had to game plan for him. Every week. We could use a guy like that opposite of Smitty (both to help Smitty and to open up some running lanes).
As for the development of other WRs...I don't buy that Moss and his habits would rub off on these guys. Guys like Gettis (see the article from earlier that talks about his work ethic) are already proven hard workers. They don't have the same character as Moss. Nor, frankly, the same natural talent. Moss is the kind of guy who has been able to slack and still excel so he's not motivated to work harder. If you think Gettis and/or Lafell suddenly look at Moss and think "Hey, he doesn't work hard so neither should I"...I think not. I don't worry about that, besides, we all know Smitty will get on your a** if you don't practice (just ask Jarrett in an interview about it).
So, I say bring him...anything to add some sort of buzz on this offense at this point is welcome IMHO. Just think of how awful they are to watch anyway - what have we got to lose?
The Panthers did have Bill Polian as their GM at one time. Bill Polian ended up taking the Panthers to arbitration to get the money that was owed to him. I smell a rat at the top of this organization!
Scott ignores all logic in order to be Tom's nemesis.
Do you really want this piece of excrement on our team. This is from an ESPN article on why he was released. He is a complete piece of cr**.
Every Friday, the Vikings invite a local establishment to cater the team's post-practice meal. Last Friday, it was a St. Paul restaurant -- a favorite of former Vikings center Matt Birk -- that served chicken, pasta, ribs and other dishes.
While his teammates lined up to dig in, Moss lashed out, according to the report.
Moss yelled "What the [expletive]? Who ordered this crap? I wouldn't feed this to my dog," a player who witnessed the incident said, according to Yahoo! Sports.
Gus Tinucci, co-owner of Tinucci's Restaurant and Catering, which provided the spread in question, confirmed the report to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
The player who witnessed Moss' food tirade called it "an uncomfortable moment," adding that he felt Moss deserved to be cut after the incident, Yahoo! Sports reported.
"This wasn't a chain -- it was a mom-and-pop restaurant, and you could tell it was their best stuff," the witness said, according to the report. "And [Moss] is at his locker saying, 'You know, I used to have to eat that crap -- but now I've got money.' You just felt so sad for them. I had never seen anyone treated like that.
"And by the way, the food was actually really good."
What an outstanding individual. He quit on the vikings, criticized his coaches and openly praised the Patriots who they just happened to be playing. This is the guy you want to represent your team.
We suck this year but we don't need a piece of @@@@ like this on our team
Panther fans, lend me your ears. Through the incompetence of Marty Hurney and Don Gregory, the energy has been sucked out of this franchise.
The 2010 season will be the most embarrassing since the 1-15 run we have had in the past. The decision to trade away next year's second-round pick for a unproven projection, the decision to give quarterback coming off the worst postseason performance in league history for a quarterback a $20 million extension and then cut him after one season, the decision to not add a SINGLE free agent to shore up any position on the team, Hurney has GUTTED this franchise.
The quarterback position is a wreck. There STILL isn't a receiver they've found that can play besides 89. Offensive line depth is non-existent.
It has gotten back to that ugly point in 2001 where you're mocked if you wear Panthers memorabilia out in public in the CITY OF CHARLOTTE HOME OF THE TEAM.
Questionable decisions have been made in the GM and coaching spots for years. Not resigning Will Witherspoon. Not drafting Joe Flacco and numerous other quarterbacks that are better than Jake Delhomme. The mostly laughable draft history since 2002. The signing of David Carr. The numerous fantastic free agents they've passed on throughout the years. The lack of halftime adjustments. Not letting players tip their hand as to what an offensive play is going to be before the snap. The same old, vanilla and conservative play-style that has driven Panther fans insane for years. To top it off, we've never had back-to-back winning seasons much less back-to-back playoff appearances and it appears like that will continue this year.
The Richardson brothers were dismissed to have a clean start in the front office. We, the good people of the Carolina Huddle, are in agreement that there should be a clean start at the GM, scouting department, and coaching positions.
Yes Moss...Yes Moss!!
Too bad they cant trade in these sorryazz fans and get some new ones who dont bitch whine moan and groan hem and haw 24/7/365.
Richardson needs to pass out about half million free baby passifiers for these whiners to suck on during game time since they love sucking on things so much.
Yo mama.

Job Well Done Moron!!
Ps...Seems you know alot about sucking yourself.....just saying <:-)
You Panthers fans are crazy as hell if you think I would ever play for you losers and tell that Tom Sorehead guy or whatever his name is to go to hell for trying to get me down there. I'd rather play for a vast frozen wasteland tundra Canadian team than for his squatters. I am a WR so who the hell could ever pass me the ball anyway? Duhhhhhh ...
X Randy Moss
ps On 2nd thought pay me two million a game and I may consider it. Bling talks BS walks.
On Randy Moss
Tennessee was No. 22 on the NFL's waiver order (which goes from worst record to best), meaning 21 other teams passed on the chance to bring Moss onto their team.
Guess that rep speaks for itself...Kudos to the other 21 teams!!
Yeah, I do need to retract my earlier statement saying "what do we have to lose" about Moss. I hadn't had a chance to read about his outburst and treatment of those restaurant owners. That's just wrong. The more I heard the more I agree that guy is a piece of s***!
Hey you chumps can 4get it now. The dumb Titans, hehehe , just signed me and you wont believe the f'king bling they forkin out. I know Im great and all but raising tick prices 20 bucks each just for me? But hey thats ok, Im worth it.
Fans can do it. Just feed the kids less. Cut down to 2 meals per day and dont use heat this winter. Its a sacrifice but hey, I am Da Kid ... Later you chumps...
