Jake likely to start vs Panthers

In just the sort of twist any good scriptwriter would love, it looks like Jake Delhomme will start Sunday at 1 p.m. for Cleveland in the Browns' home game against Carolina.

For the Panthers, meanwhile, Jimmy Clausen was back at practice today and will be the starter barring a setback. Last week's starter Brian St. Pierre still has a very sore shoulder -- he hurt it on the 88-yard TD pass to David Gettis Sunday, he said -- and so Tony Pike will likely be the No.2 QB for Carolina.

Delhomme, the QB for Carolina from 2003-09, has only started one game for his new Cleveland team -- the Sept.12 opener. He got a high ankle sprain in that one and by the time he returned, rookie QB Colt McCoy was playing well. Delhomme admitted he thought at times maybe he had played his last down because McCoy was doing so well.

Delhomme had a conference call with Charlotte-area media Wednesday and said it was "ironic" that his second start for the Browns will quite likely be against Carolina.

Delhomme, who went 58-40 as a starter for Carolina (including 5-3 in the postseason), also said he had remained close to several in the Panthers organization, most notably Jordan Gross, Jeff King and Matt Moore. He said he harbored no animosity toward the Panthers and that he considered the way they released him after last season a classy way to be fired.

McCoy has a high ankle sprain and is out at least for this week and likely for several more. Cleveland coach Eric Mangini said today he was "leaning" toward starting Delhomme due to Jake's familiarity with the Panthers. Seneca Wallace -- who has also had a high ankle sprain this season, making Browns QBs 3-for-3 with the injury -- would be the other option.

If Jake starts, that just made a game between a 1-9 Panther squad and a 3-7 Cleveland team a lot more interesting.

How much do the good seats cost again? Thanks but No Thanks.

You couldn't pay me enough money to watch Jerry's "Kids" play on Sundays.

I hope he starts and I hope he throws 17 touchdown passes.....

I'm not really a Panther fan although I've lived in Charlotte most of my 60+ years...but I find myself hoping that Delhomme soundly defeats the Panthers...I hope he throws a lot of touchdown passes, creams the locals, and then is very low-key about it in post game interviews...it would be a small Thanksgiving wish I hope to see fulfilled...and , no, I probably won't watch the game.

At least the defense should do well. Lets hope for lots of pick-6s. We all know Jake has it in him.

And watch him not throw a single interception even though there is noone who could catch them in the secondary. They couldnt catch a cold.

Go Cleveland.

I hope Jake gets a win against his former team.

Marty Hurney blows! Jerry Richardson on a daily basis.

This gives the Panthers a shot at winning and losing out in the Andrew Luck lottery in April. Lose the rest and get a great QB for next year!

Fox should not be fired and St Pierre is at least as good as Jake in every aspect when he was 30. If he resigns then ok but dont fire him. If he wants to stay let him stay.

Both QBs were unused vets when the CPs put them into action and both were underdogs. The Saints treated Delhomne like trash as did the others treat St Pierre the same.

Its good to see a coach like Fox think outside the box and use a passed over underdog. St Pierre is ripe and waited his turn like Delhomne waited his. Let the boy play.

Should be a close one.

Feel bad for saying it, but I hope Jake breaks the NFL record for single game passing yards and touchdowns. He deserves it, and so does Richardson's cheap you-know-what...
GET 'EM JAKE!

"Lose the rest and get a great QB for next year"!

What makes Luck a great QB, especially not playing an nfl snap let?

He will be thrown under the bus after 4 games as well. Might as well draft a QB for the next 5 years until they get it right.

Knowing this fanbase that loves to give up on players after 1 year with a lame duck coaching staff who won't even be here next year.

Luck will be thrown under the bus and will call for another QB to be drafted.

Sounds like poetic justice to me...

Richardson should sell this team to someone who cares about winning! It's obvious he doesn't care anymore!

I hope Jake kicks the crap out of the Carolina Kittens!

Ok Ok. We were wrong and stupid. AE is not a QQ but please try him at WR Sunday. See if can run a route catch a pass or scared to get hit ... couldnt be any worse than Smith. Hes running out of time and if he dosent show something quick he'll be an assist in Boone next year.
Maybe he can run back a punt or kickoff?

Look we apologize. You win. We lost. Just give him a shot at WR or ST.... PLEASE .. we are begging you ...
