CLEVELAND -- In a game much more entertaining than the usual Panthers' 2010 contest but ultimately ending with the same result, Carolina (1-10) has lost its fifth straight game and guaranteed John Fox's first double-digit loss season with the team.
Cleveland (4-7) edged the Panthers, 24-23, after John Kasay missed a field goal on the final play of the game. Kasay's 41-yard field-goal attempt hit the left upright and bounced away, ruining what was about to be a remarkable comeback led by rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen.
Clausen and the Panthers took over at their own 5 with 59 seconds left and no timeouts and seemed to be going nowhere until Mike Goodson broke free on a short pass and scampered 32 yards to the Carolina 48. Clausen then threw a sideline pass to a well-covered Brandon LaFell, who made a spectacular shoestring grab at the Cleveland 25 and rolled out of bounds with five seconds left. The play was reviewed by the replay booth but the ruling on the field stood.
That brought out Kasay, who had gone 3-for-4 on previous field-goal attempts. He missed and the Cleveland crowd went wild.
Jake Delhomme threw two interceptions for the Browns, one returned for a TD, but also had over 200 yards passing and led the Browns on their winning field-goal drive. Peyton Hillis scored all three of the Browns' TDs on runs of 9, 5 and 6 yards.

Geez, now even Kasay sucks as bad as the rest of the team! Way to choke!!
Well...at least the game today was entertaining! That's a change.
I had a flashback to the field goal Kasay missed in the Super Bowl game.
This has to be his last year here, missing 2, both under 50 yards, no wind, plenty of time = no excuses.
Time to move on.
I have to say I had a flashback of the Super Bowl game as well. Overall it was a good game. Clausen played well except for the one INT. I think the offensive line was the real letdown of the game. Clausen was hit or pressured too often.
Kasay needs to go too! He's way too old!!!!
Kasay will be the teams MVP for missing that FG.
The Panther's still hold on to the first pick of the draft.
He may even get a bonus now!
"I think the offensive line was the real letdown of the game. Clausen was hit or pressured too often".
Clauen didn't help holding the ball to long. The playcalling around the 1:30-1:50 mark was suspect.
Carolina had a 1st down at their 44yard line and they decide to let Clausen pass on 1st down.
Around the 7 minute mark, Fox and Meeks goes into "prevent" mode to let the Browns drive down field.
I don't like to lose but because i want the Panthers to get Andrew Luck which if turn pro then panthers should pick him. Then i was pulling for Kasey to miss that FG which he did
Im sure that Clausens QB rating will stay the worst in the NFL. Even though he had 2 INT, Jake had a good game. Only place that matters is the final score and Jake beat the team that fired him :)
Don't blame Kasay... reality is that Lafell DID NOT get out of bounds on the previous play and time should've expired. The refs blew that call.
Oh, and Ghoul... how many games has he WON for us?
John Kasey seemed like the only Panther to see the bigger picture. Thanks to the current team for actually showing some heart, and thanks Kasey for missing that field goal. It seems like the Panthers are destined for Luck....
John,
Terry Bradshaw won 4 Superbowls, why isn't he still the Steelers' quarterback?
whats the line that JR moves this team out of charlotte ?
"Anonymous said... I had a flashback to the field goal Kasay missed in the Super Bowl game."
Kasay didn't miss a field goal in the Super Bowl. He kicked the final kickoff out of bounds.
Ghoul,
Don't forget that 11 of the 23 points came from Kasay. The INT for a TD counted for 6, so that means that other than Kasey and the INT, the ENTIRE rest of the team counted for only 6 more points!
Don't forget that the only reason you try a Field Goal is because the offense already FAILED to gain a first down. Again, that FG attempt never should've happened because LaFell did NOT get out of bounds on the previous play but the refs missed the call. The replay clearly showed that but it wasn't reviewable.
Do you guys agree with what i said in my video as far the panthers are 1-10?

Not to sound rude but I think we realize he didn't miss a field goal during the Super Bowl. I think the comment is more of a comparison of how, while he has won many many games for the Panthers, Kasay has had some heartbreakers during his career here.
While this game is not even in the same Universe of importance as the Super Bowl game was, a win today would have been a moral victory for this team. Why would anyone want to see there team lose?
I do not subscribe to the same idea that some do of trying to lose games on purpose in order to ensure the number one draft pick. I would be happy for the Panthers to win out and end up with a 5 to 10 pick in the draft.
Here lately I am happy just to see my favorite team play on Sunday as I don't always get that chance. Those of you who want to throw away your tickets instead of supporting your team should think twice. There are many of us who have not had the chance to ever go to a game in person. I understand that you want to see a winning product on the field. So do I, but we will not win the Super Bowl every year. I think everyone should enjoy the fact that the Panthers were down big but came back and battled through adversity. Although they did not win they did not give up unlike some fans have this year. I for one am one fan that will never give up on this team. Jump off the band wagon if you want. But I for one am here to stay.
Well at least the game was watchable the whole time instead of being turned off in the 3rd quarter. It's a shame our most reliable player actually missed 2 FGs today. That was the difference in the game.
Ghoul,
You've also been spoiled by Kasay... the two misses were "under 50" but also over 40... that's no automatic.
Recap: Kasey hit from 43, 42, & 43 but missed from 46 & 42. How many kickers do better than that? Not a lot!
Hurney blows! Richardson on a daily basis!
I also do not blame Kasay for this one... not only did the receiver not get out of bounds, but the ball actually touched the turf during his catch. That was simply a blown call.
I'm a Kasay fan... he's darn near automatic and a gentleman like no other. Give the brother a break!
Go Cowboys!!!
Wow hoping you team to lose so they can get the 1st round pick shows how fair wheather this fanbase is.
Don'y worry after 4-5 games Luck will be thrown under the bus. It never ends and I will hear how they should draft another QB for the next 5 years.
Tough loss...better effort...entertaining considering other performances
Has anyone mentioned the amazing run after catch Goodson had? Solid
I have to look at the big picture and attribute this loss to John Fox. I believe if we are able to obtain an offense-focused head coach and a hard-nosed defensive coordinator, our existing talent may surprise us in a good way.
IMHO, both Matt Moore and Clausen would be better QBs if we had a coach to build player confidence. Fox kept Jake way too long and should have had Moore engaged much earlier in last year's season. After Jake was traded (a good move) it's as though Fox lost his own sense of confidence and it was contagious to the team.
I would like for us to entice Tony Dungy out of retirement and have our young players grow around him.
Kasey has won more games than any other and now they jump on him. Nobody else is at fault.
Must be that damn vanilla kicking game.
