The Panthers continue to play musical chairs -- by necessity -- with the most important spot on the field. Today The Observer is reporting that the team will sign Keith Null, a former sixth-round draft pick who started four games in 2009 for the St. Louis Rams, to the practice squad (but he could be promoted if Jimmy Clausen isn't cleared to play due to his concussion).
A few QB notes while we've got a minute (and here's the link to my column on John Fox and his chipper attitude during these strange times):
1) This is the oddest Panther QB season since 2007, when Jake Delhomme's season-ending injury early gave rise to Vinny Testaverde, David Carr and Matt Moore all starting games. But that group had loads of NFL experience (except Moore) compared to this one.
2) Do you know when Brian St. Pierre actually won the job last week? In Wednesday's practice. It was apparent then to a large majority of the people on that practice field that BSP -- even without a training camp with the team -- understood more about cadences, snaps, play variations, etc., then Tony Pike did. Simply put, last Wednesday was an audition, and St. Pierre got the part.
3) Of course, now BSP has a sore arm. Not as serious as Clausen's concussion which kept him out last week, but still problematic.
Let's say both couldn't play due to injury Sunday at Cleveland. Would Fox actually skip over Pike again and play Null? Again, Wednesday's practice would be the key, but I think this time Pike would have the edge (after all, the Panthers weren't impressed enough with Null to sign him immediately after working him out).
4) As for Cleveland, the Browns may actually start Jake Delhomme this week, which I'd love to see simply because of all the possible story angles it would provide. Jake has only started one game for the Browns all season -- against Tampa in a Week 1 loss -- before he got a high-ankle sprain while throwing a key interception. That -- and rookie Colt McCoy's emergence (he's 2-3 as a starter) -- has kept Jake on the bench. But McCoy now has his own ankle injury and is questionable for Sunday. If he can't play, the Browns will choose between Jake and Seneca Wallace. Here's the full story from today's Cleveland Plain Dealer.

So much for only 5 throws in the NFL or that he didnt know the plays due to lack of time. Take away the final 2 hasty unneeded interceps and St Pierre still made both Clausen and Moore and sport writers look dumb. Boston College has had solid football for ages. St Pierre proved he is the Panthers future QB.
why do all the Observer columnists take ultra dork headshot pics? Just look normal and quit smirking.
I just read a blog that said "Marty Hurney will remain as the Panher's General Manager in 2011." Is their any truth to this? Can anyone out there address this for me? Thanks. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Be careful if you're traveling somewhere.
Why don't the Panthers just come out and say why they won't start Tony Pike? You sign two "veteran" QB's that have thrown very few passes in their NFL careers. The season is hopeless anyway. Let Pike play and put Armanti Edwards in for a few snaps here and there. He can start out running the Wildcat. You know, good Offensive Coordinators can adapt their offensive play calls around their QB's strenghts. By the way, with the lack of protection the O-line usually provides, it doesn't matter which QB they have in there.
For the love of God, AE isn't an NFL QB, wasn't drafted as a QB and hasn't taken snaps in practice as a QB. What is the love affair and fascination with a guy who couldn't even prove himself in our dismal pre-season? Get over it, move on.
When are the Panthers going to realize that they have the next Michael Vick already on their payroll and try Armanti Edwards. He's their BEST chance at WINNING, instead of bringing in all these washed up has beens, use who you have!
@ David R -
Hurney allegedly was extended a contract during the summer months but details of his contract were not released.
Other comment - BSP did well despite the stupid playcalling - the two picks were bad but again we put ourselves in a position where we HAD to throw long because we didnt do it enough early on. Again, coaching and playcalling. And HORRIBLE O line play again - we need to get rid of Kalil that guy has been deplorable this year.
I get the excitement and passion for AE, but there's one distinction that needs to made when people say "he's the next Michael Vick".
Vick played D1 ball against against real competition, while AE played D1AA. AE was good, but the competition definitely leaves something to be desired.
I'd personally like to see SOMETHING out of Davidson beside vanilla, and that includes using the personnel on the roster in a fashion that gives them the best chance to have success.
Isn't insanity defined as repeating the same processes and expecting different reults???
Sweet...I'm up next...guess I should dress out this Sunday?
What if they started saying the Panthers need something more than a "chocolate offense" or "chocolate defense" etc?
Why is the "vanilla" QB and headcoach only blamed?
Rodney Peete started for the CP for sev yrs and he was SUCK !!!
I beleiev it was 17 years ago that Jerry Richardson started selling PSLs to build his State of The Art Stadium. Well, the stadium is still here. That's ll we have to show for it. Mr Richardson, would you care to buy back out PSLs ? We've been waiting for you to produce the winner you promised.
You, sir are responsible. Get out of the chicken and biscuit business(he owns Bojangles) and get in the football business. You are responsible for this embarrasing mess.
To 10:43
He owns Hardee's genius and we would not even have the Panthers without him. You bought PSL's and expect a Superbowl every year? - fairweather fan
This is the coach that felt DeShaun Foster was better than Deangelo Williams. No wonder they want give Pike or Edwards a chance. The fact that he want give them a chance tells me that both are more ready to play QB than anyone realizes. For those AE haters, yes he looks rough as a WR. That's because he's a QB and a darn good one! Play him and then we'll shut up!
A darn good QB who couldn't even make the roster in pre season? Yeah, he's darn good, all right. If you aren't good enough to make the roster as a QB now, just how bad are you really? That would be really really really bad. Move on, AE isn't an NFL QB, nor was he drafted as one.
Say what you want about AE. AE outplayed and led his team to a victory over a present NFL starting quarterback in Joe Flacco of Delaware The season is over, give him a shot.
Since there are 31 other teams in the NFL begging for AE as their qb surely CP could trade him for say a Manning or Breas since hes all that.
So, because he beat Flaco in college he is a better NFL QB? That's about the dumbest logic I've ever heard. Plenty of great NFL QBs have lost to guys who never made the league, hundreds upon hundreds in fact. What's your point? The guys isn't good enough to warrant consideration over journeyman stay at home dads and you want him to be our starting QB? Based on what? He was absolutely horrible in pre season and not even good enough to get snaps. In the NFL the savior of the team doesn't ride the pine. Absolutely ludicrous arguments to bring him in.
I love all the experts who say Armanti isn't a pro QB. And you know this how? Because you have the NFL ticket and watch SportsCenter? You arm chair experts don't have a clue. None of us do because we're not allowed to find out because John Fox wants to get fired so he can be home for the holidays.
I guess we'll have to wait until a coach arrives that has some marbles because it's clear AE isn't getting on the field this year. Too bad because he'd shut up a lot of the haters. Unlike the haters, I've watched him play against NFL players and he's something special. He has the "it" factor to go with an accurate rifle arm (it was written last spring that the passes he threw at the Combine were the best of the bunch) and escapability that is unparalleled on this team.
All the "get over it" comments are laughable. Tough talk from momma's basement. We're all Panther fans here and most of us just want to see what our future holds, not washed up loser QBs who don't stand a chance of being on the team next year. Fire Fox and play Armanti. If he sucks, then I'll get over it. But until then, admit you have no basis for your crude analysis.
Um, Einstein, is isn't armchair QBs who have assessed AE's skill levels. It is 32 NFL teams. So, seems you are astonishingly and incredibly wrong. Oh wait, you are an NFL coach or talent scout for the NFL, right? Which team do you work for? That's what I thought, crickets. Now, move along little child, adults belong on this site.
Oh, and one other point to the child with the man-crush on AE, Fox won't be home for the holidays because the Panthers actually wrap the season on Jan. 2, after the holidays. Might I suggest you familiarize yourself with something called a schedule. Then, after you master the art of reading without moving your mouth, you can move up to coloring in the lines.
Jeez - the previous poster is right on the money! No one knows how AE may or may not do as a QB so why not give him a chance?? Unless you're living under a rock, its pretty dang obvious that NONE of the other QB's have been productive - period. Give the kid a shot and he either works out or he doesn't. Either way, we'll know for sure.....
We did know for sure, in pre-season, when he was horrible. The NFL really isn't much of a league for second chances if you stink really badly in pre-season.
I need to take a dump after this one.
Not sure what all this AE talk is about, or the bashing on Fox. First, the coach has seen these players in practice and during meetings. He understands who knows the plays and who doesn't. Apparently, if Pike or Edwards were the best option, don't you think a coach with a "win now" mentality would have put them out there. It was the same when we had Jake, everybody cried for Moore. Sure, Moore looked good for a few games, but then he became deer in headlights. I'm pretty sure Fox had a clue that would happen and that's why Moore was the back up.
You guys talk of these unproven quarterbacks as if they have won 3 SB rings, and then call other less unproven QBs washed up? How can you be washed up with only 2-4 starts. See this is why Fox and JR are doing what they are doing and you all are sitting at work complaining.
Be a real fan, cheer for your team in good and Bad times. That is what true fans do. There are teams out there who never made it to the superbowl or even won NFC championship games. We have a young franchise and have been to the superbowl and to NFC championship game 3 times. JR knows what he is doing... you just need to be patient, and trust the people that know what's going on instead of giving unsupported opinions.
You guys who keep saying "Armanti Edwards isn't an NFL quarterback" seem to think that Matt Moore, Tony Pike, Jimmy Clausen, Brian St. Pierre, and Keith Null are.
Edwards, is I think the only one of that group to lead a team above the high school level to a championship. He won the conference championship 4 times, the National Championship twice and beat the number 5 team (Michigan) in the nation in what was probably the greatest upset in college football of the last 75 years.
In short Edwards does bring something to the table almost no one else on the team does.
HE IS A WINNER!!
And they are REAL short of winners on this team. And what is the worst that could happen? Lose another game?!
I always become amused when someone tells me how to be real fan. What they really mean is you have to buy into the coaching philosophy regardless of on-field performance or record. Being a real fan does not mean you have to suffer with horrible play or pretend the team is good.
I've read it all now. AE is a great NFL QB because he won in high school. That's the most ridiculous thing I have ever read. Every single NFL QB was probably the best HS QB his high school team ever had or ever will have. Every single NFL player was probably the best or one of the top 3 best players his high school team ever had.
Winning in HS and college is cute, yet irrelevant in the NFL, just ask Chris Leak or about 2000 other highly successful QBs that flopped in the NFL. Get a clue, please, seriously.
Thats right moron. Edwards is not an NFL 5'9" QB. He is a 5th string WR as he was signed for by only one team but so far has shown nothing in practice. Lots of winners. Does Pop Warner Middle or High School count?
All theose QBs you named were winners for D1A big name schools. Big diff.
Unfortunately I do not think it matters who plays QB for the Panthers this season - the O line is providing zero protection so whoever plays back there will get beaten like Moore and Clausen. Personally I would like to see either Pike or AE get a shot but at this point they would be punching bags unless something is done to shore up the protection first. Also, if folks want to diss AE for his preseason play then maybe Fox and call the Ravens and see if they will send us Hunter Cantwell again since he played pretty good for us in the preseason...
I just want to make sure I understand the bizarre notion that AE is our savior. How did he do in pre season? He stunk. Was he drafted as a QB? No. How many teams have called the Panthers asking for AE in a trade? Zero. How many journeymen (being kind) NFL QBs have been selected over him to start? Two. Oh, but he's the best thing since you people couldn't wait to bring in Weinke, or Moore, or Clausen.
no one has said AE is the savior. All they're asking for is TO GIVE HIM A CHANCE just like all the other hobo's they've signed the past couple of weeks. GIVE HIM A CHANCE. If he sucks, then what is lost? If he is good...
Give him a chance? What are you talking about? He has had chances all year, including pre season and hasn't even risen above the level of horrible. If the guy can't make a small case for himself in pre season and practices, why does he deserve any sort of shot in a game? HE WASN'T DRAFTED AS A QB, FYI.
So if he wasn't drafted as a QB then he can't play QB? Illogical.
As far as the preseason goes, when did he not perform as a QB.
Logic would say make AE the #2 QB, run the Wildcat for a possession in each half, for a change of pace as other NFL teams do and go from there.
Fox/Davidson aren't playing to win, they are playing not to lose (keep games close), hence his ridulous time management statement a few weeks ago vs. not running the wildcat.
The Panthers are a distant 32 in offense, time management is what it is.
A QB named NULL. How fitting for the Panthers as Null is their chance of winning another game this season.
"If he sucks, then what is lost? "
If AE sucks then John Fox is completely embarassed and laughed at by future potential employers for starting a player at the most important position on the field when he wasn't drafted to play - the position and he hasn't practiced for much and when he did he was terrible. If he can't make plays in practice then he can't make plays on Sunday
To 10:47, Richardson sold Hardee's just after starting the Panthers. He bought Bojangles, along with others including Hugh McColl, 5 years ago. Why do you think Delhomme starred in all those ads?
Armanti Edwards is the Gerald Henderson of pro football (good college player who can't get in the game even though he is on a terrible Charlotte team).
I think we have a couple of TopCats who have thrown a pass or two. Give them a shot.
Forget about Armani, can we just forfeit the rest of the games and solidify the number one pick now.
"I keep trying to think, but nothing happens"....Jeff Davidson.
"So if he wasn't drafted as a QB then he can't play QB? Illogical."
So, if he wasn't drafted as a QB, hasn't taken snaps as a QB and isn't learning the offense as a QB, we should still play him as a QB? Oh, but somehow we are going to magically learn the wildcat offense despite a team that hasn't prepped at all or built for that. Illogical.
"Um, Einstein, is isn't armchair QBs who have assessed AE's skill levels. It is 32 NFL teams. "
Yo dummy. No. Wrong. Its 31 teams. You dont count the team he is already on goofy. Def not a math major.
Jimmy Clausen makes Chris Weinke look like Joe Montana.
He'll be selling car insurance in 2012. Pike and Moore will still be playing football.
"He's had a quarterback coach since age 10", so did Casey and Rick.
This entire discussion is retarded!! Its not the QB!! We could time travel back, get Joe Montana from the late 1980's and it wouldn't matter. If you don't have anyone to throw it to, anyone to block for you and any running game to build play-action...game over.
If Chris Leak cannot break into the 32 teams of the NFL because he was under 6ft after heralded by the Observer as the greatest ever helping win at
D1A Florida how in the hell could some runt 5'9" D1AA scrambler non-passer pretender ever play? RU insane?
Weinke was 6'5" 250" Heisman winner with a D1A title and D1A runnerup and was drafted only by CP. He played one season.
D1AA no big deal short WR Edwards is a joke.
Get off the crack.
Not sure who is more dumb...the posters on this blog going back n forth about AE (who isn't and will never be a NFL QB) or me for reading all these retarded rants...(shaking my head).
"Um, Einstein, is isn't armchair QBs who have assessed AE's skill levels. It is 32 NFL teams. "
Yo dummy. No. Wrong. Its 31 teams. You dont count the team he is already on goofy. Def not a math major."
I figured you'd say this and expose your ignorance further. The Panthers didn't draft him as a QB, hence 32 teams did not draft him as a QB. Might want to rethink your CPCC degree there Einstein. Keep up next time, kiddo.
BOSTON COLLEGE BRIAN ST PIERRE IS GOING TO BE A GREAT QB FOR THE NEXT 7 YEARS AS PANTHERS STARTER.
HE IS THE NEXT JAKE DELHOMNE AT CAROLINA AND WILL WILL TAKE THE CATS BACK TO THE SUPER BOWL AND WIN THIS TIME!!!
Forget about the quarterback situation. Nothing good will happen at that position for the rest of the season.
Instead, discuss the new team colors and name when this franchise is moved to Los Angeles and begins play there in 2012.
"You can only be drafted ONCE you moronic lamebrain. It does not matter what position. Using your idiot logic 32 teams could draft you for 32 positions. Stop trying to cover your ignorance and stupdity with more of the same."
Thank you for the lesson. Apparently I was unaware you could only be drafted once. The Panthers drafted him as a WR, not a QB. But, you keep thinking the Panthers hit the jackpot drafting a 5'9" WR to be our savior at QB. To repeat, 32 teams wanted nothing to do with him as a QB. The Panthers drafted him so you mountain goats would come down from Boone. Now, since you are down here, it is our job, those of us with teeth, to educate you on football. Now, it is time for you to saddle up the mule train and head back up the big hill to whatever one room school house you hail from, youngblood.
Smaller and slower and wearker than Vick. Half as bright as Flutie.
To all those who say NOT to give AE a chance - that he wasn't QB material in the pre-season, that he is too short, etc, etc ad nauseum.
Just wanted to point out that the team is 1-9 and Moore, Clausen and St. Pierre have been totally unproductive. Seriously. I mean, Pike was overlooked in favor of BSP, even though he was idle for 9 months.
Given that the season is a total loss, why not give the former Mountaineer a couple of snaps? I mean, its not like he could do any worse!
The Panthers have never given AE a true chance and until they do no one will ever know his abilities in the NFL. Yes he has struggled as a wide receiver and wouldn't you if you had never played that position before, same goes as a return specialist. Give him a chance at playing the position he knows and heck maybe the Panthers might have an exciting play during a game. He is a playmaker and people need to understand that yes he is small, but he can take hits and is able to move and with the way the O line has looked all year I think a mobile quarterback sounds like a great idea. All of this is from a club level owner who doesn't see the need to give anyone a $1 million signing bonus who you aren't gonna give a chance to make your team better and if he makes it worse well then I was wrong and the Panthers made another mistake, but it sure isn't the first one.
N O !!!
WHAT PART OF NO DO U NOT UNDERSTAND?
ITS REAL SIMPLE. WE DONT LIKE MOUNTAINTEERS. NONE OF THEM.
CASE CLOSED. REQUEST DENIED.
NEXT !!! NOW BEAT IT.
JR
The AE fanatics on here keep saying "give" him a chance. This is the NFL, nobody "gives" you anything, you have to "earn" your chances. Apparently, he has not yet earned the right to take the field.
"The Panthers have never given AE a true chance and until they do no one will ever know his abilities in the NFL. Yes he has struggled as a wide receiver and wouldn't you if you had never played that position before, same goes as a return specialist. So, let me understand your logic. He has struggled in two positions big time and yet you want to turn over the offense, the most technical and complex position on the team, to him? That makes zero sense.
Personally, I think that the main reason that Fox and Co. haven't given Pike or Edwards a shot at game time (or practice time) is that both QBs played in wide-open shotgun offenses in college and--with both Moore and Clausen (who played the pro-style Notre Dame offense)--in camp Fox didn't think they'd have to work up anything beyond what they were used to doing.
Now, they are reeling from week to week depending on hastily signed rejects just to have guys who can take a snap from center, no matter whether they throw more red zone interceptions than completions.
At the GM and coaching level, it's all about the need for planning and foresight. The GM knew this well enough to draft Pike and Edwards, but the coaches weren't ready to use them correctly or effectively because they didn't think they'd need them.
Maybe that will change for the better next year.
...understood more about cadences, snaps, play variations, etc., THAN Pike did.
Just because our team sucks doesn't mean out grammar has to.
just a note to the 'genius' who called out a poster about Mr Richardson owning Bojangles. Mr Richardson does hold the largest stake in BOJANGLES. Mr Richardson made his fortune with Hardee's but sold his interest in those stores.
One should use caution when calling someone out for having a lack of intelligence. Particularly when you are so grossly uninformed.
I am not an NFL scout or former NFL player, so I am not going to claim I know the type of player Armanti Edwards would be as an NFL QB. I will say that the argument of all 31 NFL teams passed on him does not hold water. Do you honestly believe that all NFL teams have not made a mistake on evaluating a player (more specifically a QB) previously? Let’s run down some examples…
Brett Favre – 2nd round (passed on by all 29 teams… 1991) – 2 Super Bowl appearances (won 1, 3 consecutive NFL MVP awards, played in 295 consecutive games
Tom Brady – drafted in the 6th round (passed on by all 32 teams 5 times, some teams passed on him 6 times) – 4 Super Bowl appearances (won 3, SB MVP twice, NFL MVP once)
Kurt Warner – undrafted (passed on by all 32 teams 7 times) – 3 Super Bowl appearances (won 1, SB MVP once, NFL MVP twice)
Jake Delhomme – undrafted (passed on by all 32 teams 7 times) – 1 Super Bowl appearance (pretty good for an undrafted player)
What about all the supposed “greats” that all these teams had high on their draft boards Ryan Leaf, David Carr, Akili Smith, Rick Mirer, Tim Couch, Jeff George, and the list goes on.
Also, the Panthers traded a 2nd round pick in next year’s draft to move up to the 3rd round to get this guy. Granted it was as a WR but who is to say he cannot play QB in the NFL (I think the examples above speak for themselves). This season is over for the Panthers, Fox will be out of here next year, the offensive line is not all that great and we are using guys that were car salesmen last week. What is there to lose by preparing AE to play QB and giving him a chance?
What I do know about A. Edwards is the guy can run, has escapability (with no O-line this could help), is a winner (went into the Big House and was unfazed by the 110,000+ fans), and is a hometown guy (with nothing else to look forward to from this team on Sunday at least fans would have something to cheer about).
The way I hear it, AE is as dumb as a post... Can't learn the receiver position, let alone QB... BTW, nice guy, athletic, tries hard, just not bright
Favre - D1 quarterback, 6'2", 222
Brady - D1 quarterback, 6'4", 225
Warner - D1 quarterback, 6'2", 215
Delhomme - D1 quarterback, 6'2", 215
Edwards - FCS quarterback, 5'9", 180
Before you go comparing, at least find guys who are remotely similar to Edwards. Playing one game in four years at Michigan is clearly not the same as playing 4 years in big time games.
Papa Richardson had a failing Hardee's/Denny's system when McColl bailed him out. He has not ever run a successful business, other than making money for himself. McColl owed Papa since Papa borrowed so much from McColl it helped McColl get Hootie Johnson to back him as CEO of NCNB.
Your first use of THEN is correct. Your second should be THAN not THEN
Signing a QB by the name of "Null" pretty much sums up the season. It's been an empty or "NULL" one for sure.
To whomever the guy was that when above and beyond research and listed players height and weight... give me a break. Based on that brilliant theory, all of the best players would be based on height/weight/40 time. Drafting would not be a hard at all... simply look at height/weight... oh, he is 6'5 220, well he is a shoe-in to be a Pro Bowler/Hall of Famer, draft him.
Ryan Leaf - 6'5 235
Tim Couch - 6'4 220
David Carr - 6'3 216
Joey Harrington - 6'4 210
Edwards is listed at 5'11 185lbs. How tall is Doug Flutie (5'10 180)? Drew Brees (listed at 6' 209)? Michael Vick (6' 212) Seneca Wallace (5'11 200)? All played/play QB in the NFL.
Also, are you saying just because he is from an FCS school he cannot make it in the NFL? Steve McNair... Alcorn State... have you heard of him?
Also, App State won 4 conference titles and 2 National Championships while he was QB. He is the first ever two time winner of the Walter Payton award and holds numerous records (single game, season, and career).
How about do a little research and find out his accomplishments before spouting off height/weight with no other data.
My post was long enough without writing a novel on the guys college career. The Michigan game was simply a reference to him not being overwhelmed by a big moment (as is his ability to win 2 National Championships).
Favre - D1 quarterback, 6'2", 222
-Southern Miss, not exactly a power or plays against powers regularly
Brady - D1 quarterback, 6'4", 225
-Michigan...
Warner - D1 quarterback, 6'2", 215
-Northern Iowa, FCS just like App St you moron
Delhomme - D1 quarterback, 6'2", 215
-ULL, a team that would get spanked by the top FCS teams every year
Edwards - FCS quarterback, 5'9", 180
im not a fan of AE playing QB but your argument there is just awful. if you want to compare him to a few similar players try
Drew Brees, 5'11" 210 lbs
-Purdue, again not exactly a power
Tavaris Jackson, 6'1" 220 lbs
-Alabama St, an awful FCS team like App st
both are small, drafted in the 2nd round. obviously Brees is a top tier QB. Jackson is backing up Farve, yet to have a consistent opportunity to see what he can do, although he may get it this season.
i do think AE should get some time in the mountaineer package to change things up, but no more than 2-3 series a game.
When is it my turn to play Marty? I think i can do it ? I am 6'2 225. Ok OK I am 61 but I think I can do as well in the won - lost column as the other stiffs you hire each week.

Who is it that HATES Armanti?
The Panthers President was Wofford's former AD....does he hate Armanti because he killed them so many times?
Richardson gradulated from Wofford...same reason?
Fox....was AE not HIS choice? Or is he just so much behind Belichik in using the players to their best ability?
Drew Breas 6"3" 227 lbs.
I can not believe how polarizing the topic of Edwards is. Here is how I see it, in the most simplistic way:
Carolina traded up to get Edwards. Why? Most likely the key reason was that this fan base needed to be infused with some excitement. Whether you are an AE fan, or an App. State fan, you cant deny the fact that most likely that was the main reason behind this move. Now the Panthers have one win, and there isn’t much to be excited about at all.
I know a lot of you do not like the idea of AE getting into the game at all. I understand you do not think he has earned it, wasn’t drafted as a QB, etc. All are valid arguments. I personally do not think he should be put in as the starter. But let me ask this, why not run some sort of wildcat package? Can we all agree that AE is FAST? Yes. Can we all agree that if AE is running this package, the opposing defense has to be a little more concerned of a pass than they would be like when D Williams was running it?
I just think this offense needs an injection of excitement. Guys, where is the harm in trying at least a play or two in this formation? IF Carolina drafted AE to infuse some excitement in the fan base, it is time to see if it works, otherwise, we gave away the coming 2nd round draft pick for an experiment that the coaches are too afraid to even try.
AE has been having problems taking snaps under center in practices according to some friends I know who keeps up with the Panthers.
He's a project that isn't worth a damn 2nd round pick. Using college and awards he has achieve into indicating he can play QB is no longer to be mention unless he proves himself at the nfl level.
First off .... everyone on here has little information on actually what goes on in a NFL week of practice....In short, Fox didn't decide that BSP was starting Hurney did, the scouts give the info to the pres/gm, and they relay that to Fox on who is to play....Second AE would have been in the game had BSP got hurt last week, its a real shame that "Fans" are such ignorant people, it is amazing how you guys comment and more the HALF of you never played any type of major sport....keep coaching from the nose bleeds, and let the real athletes entertain you
"I can not believe how polarizing the topic of Edwards is."
One of the major underlying pc issues being avoided is libbies are making this a not so secret race issue at QB and keep hinting at it. They want "vanilla" replaced with "chocolate". Cant you tell by all the whining? If there is one thing they can do it is WHINE and CRY to get their way.
"Burn Baby Burn" shall be the new battle cry for the Los Angeles Panthers. Then we can rebuild this mess into a championship caliber football team.
why don't you people root for a real team like Atlanta? Panthers suck. AE won't change that. once good ol Jake comes back to town (if he gets the start) he's ganna show y'all up.
Plus, its not just the panthers young qbs and no name new additions that suck.
Steve Smith, Beason, Williams, Stewart, Moore (lol), and you're tight ends are all having horrible seasons. Richard Marshall falls down almost half the time. your stupid center couldn't even seem to snap the ball last game. god knows what will happen to the Panthers when Casey retires, he's the only worth while player in the entire organization! Plus he scores almost all your points.
Come on, what does it say about Pike and AE (and the Panthers overall) that BSP of all people was picked to start last game!?
It says that you should root for Atlanta.
"If AE sucks then John Fox is completely embarassed and laughed at by future potential employers for starting a player at the most important position on the field when he wasn't drafted to play - the position and he hasn't practiced for much and when he did he was terrible. If he can't make plays in practice then he can't make plays on Sunday"
you think Fox isn't catching ridicule for the QB decisions he's made already? That dates back to his decision to stick with Delhomme last year. through the release of Jake, and through today.
I honestly wonder how some folks justify the things they say. App State might be situated in the mountains, but it is not attended by hill-billies and rednecks (well, not exclusively anyway.... I would imagine there are at least a few floating around up there). These things sound a lot like possible sour grapes from fans of bigger NC schools (which incidentally almost universally refuse to play against the Mountaineers because ASU fields a competitive team regardless of who they play against).
Edwards broke McNair's passing and rushing records. Success in the NFL is about so many different factors it's hard to point at one in particular to use as your yardstick.... some first rounders have terrific careers (Aikman) and some don't (Carr). Some players go undrafted and go on to shock the world (Brady).
I've never heard that Edwards is stupid or has trouble picking up offenses. The center exchange issue has more to do with Kalil having some issues this year and Edwards having taken 100% of his snaps in the shotgun in college. If you play a player, it should be to his strengths, which we seem to struggle with from a coaching perspective.
I actually thought Edwards did ok for the limited snaps he received in the preseason.... he ran the ball a couple of times and got a few yards, he even threw a couple of passes and completed at least one I can remember. The only place he actually seems to be struggling is at wr and kick returner, although he has had a few catches if you count the preseason. He also showed an ability to get yards after the catch on one play.
The fact is that no one knows what kind of impact he will have until he is utilized. He's a joker in the deck which I think justifies giving him some kind of playing time at this point. I don't understand why so many people actually seem angry about the idea.... we drafted the guy. The coaches must have seen something they liked to go to the trouble they did to get him. Other WR's have played QB in the NFL (Seneca Wallace) and shown good ability at both positions.
Edwards came in as an acknowledged "project" player, someone who needed time to adjust to his new position. Project means he won't necessarily be anything to count on right away.... and we knew that going in. I'd personally love to see him get out there and play some more (I agree with the "what could it possibly hurt" crowd).... I mean are we planning on keeping Null and St. Pierre? If so why did we bother with the draft at all? Play the guys who will be here next year, and I think maybe quit the predictable "run run pass" thing we have going now.... it obviously isn't working.

PIKE, please, PIKE. He's a winner on the PLAYING FIELD [ Not the practice field ].
To the let AE play crowd, that just isn't the thing to do now. A great college career doesnt mean a great NFL on. Troy Smith led Ohio State to a national title and won the heismen but look at him now, fighting for the job for the 49ers
