Panthers win 28-21 thanks to Double Trouble

The Panthers survived a late comeback by Tampa Bay and won their second straight game, 28-21, Sunday at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, behind 100-yard plus rushing games from both DeAngelo Williams (152) and Jonathan Stewart (110).

Carolina is now 2-3 on the season and has another winnable game at home against Buffalo next Sunday. Tampa Bay is 0-6.

With the score tied 21-all following a Jake Delhomme interception that was returned for a TD, the Panthers put the game in the hands of their running backs and offensive line. On the final drive, Carolina repeatedly ran the ball with DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, and Tampa Bay seemed almost powerless to stop them.

UPDATED: Much like the Panthers' Monday night win over Tampa Bay last December, this game was ultimately decided by the Panthers' ability to bash their way through the Bucs. In fact, those games now rank No.1 and No.2 in terms of Panthers' all-time rushing yardage: 299 against Tampa last December and 267 against Tampa on Sunday.

The Panthers' 80-yard game-winning drive, which started with 8:33 left in the fourth quarter, ultimately ended with a 1-yard DeAngelo Williams TD plunge with 0:29 left. The 8-minute drive consisted of 16 plays -- 15 runs and one 4-yard flanker screen from Delhomme to Steve Smith (which was Smith's only catch of the game).

Tampa Bay then got the ball back with 29 seconds left on its own 20 but only got to its own 28 before time ran out.

"Much like the Panthers' Monday night win over Carolina last December ..."

Wait, what?

Can't wait to see all the people that predicted the Panthers wouldn't win a game with Fox as coach come in & say "they were supposed to beat the Bucs cause they suck". Let the haters begin!!!

Please allow me to be the first to say it, mrbernz. They were supposed to beat the Bucs, b/c the Bucs suck... the fact that it came down to a game-winning drive (mastered by the backs and not delhomme or fox) is sad, and you sir, know nothing of NFL football.

Much like the Panthers' Monday night win over Carolina last December-Geez, I must have missed that one.

I certainly remember that matchup. It was a classic battle of wills in which Carolina tried desparately to overcome the Panthers ground attack, but came up short in the end.

We should have won this one by at least 3 TDs. Three things struck me watching this game:

1. We still have the worst playcalling in the league
2. Chris Gamble is not and will never be a shutdown corner
3. Our Special Teams are the worst tackling unit in the league

I would love to roast Jake and he threw a boner on the last pick but this one, while a win, was horrible. Fox shouldnt feel good about this we won despite his stupidity.

Why is Jake still out there. His only TD's are to other team. We can't win without consistantly without some form of passing attack. Great job of running but where is our Drew Breese?

I think what Scott meant was that sometimes the greatest opponent is yourself. Or maybe it was just a typo.

We can't continue to play Jake, point blank. The RB's and the O-Line deserve a game ball and anything else they can get. As a coach, if you are not confident with your QB throwing the ball then he shouldn't be in there. This QB is pathetic and Fox can say yes he's my man but where is another QB for us. Vick anyone????? I know, bash him all you want but he didn't throw interceptions like that.

LOL! Was that a scrimmage??

Despite themselves, the Panthers managed to win this game.

nice win for the panthers denfense and running game looked great can't wait till someone has the guts to pull delhomme then we may be the team we are expected to be

The Bucs aren't worth a penny. They play us again on week 13 at home. I'm sure the Bucs have already circled that one... We'll just have to run it down their throats again!

i say fire fox put jim skipper in charge for now so at least we can bench jake and have hope for a descent season jakes terrible , we don't need a drew brees but a guy who doesnt lose the game,(wouldnt complain if we had brees. if we wouldve played 25 other teams we wouldve been punished today delhomme sucks hes gotta go

I think the D played pretty well today only allowing the 7...But wtg Double Trouble good to see the boys celebrating in the endzone again...

Jake is the worst QB in the NFL

He a good guy, but I'm starting to hate him and Fox more and more. How about Jake keep it real and tell them he can't do it anymore. Its best they go with the younger Matt, who can actually see the whole field

Jake is awful but someone else made the decision to have him on the field. Richardson should have fired the GM and coach long ago for their incompetence. The GM has made terrible acquisitions and the coaches play calling have been the worst in team history. Can we please go to Raleigh and get Coach Cower before the Redskins do. We already missed out on Vick and Garcia.

Ron Meeks has done an outstanding job turning around our defense. We are not great, but we have made great improvements. There is no reason in the world why we should stick with Delhomme. Absolutely none. His completion percantage sucks. His YPA is pathetic. He consistenly throws crucial and mind numbing interceptions. He has cost of games. Worst of all, our best player, can't even make an impact on the game anymore, because Delhomme can't get him the football. Delhomme has turned into David Carr, period! Can you imagine how most of the players feel in that locker? I almost guarentee you they are not behind Delhomme, how can they be? Sure they might like the guy, but he gives you no chance in the passing game. I wish that they would speak up, so we can get over this nightmare. Maybe the next QB want be any better, but how in the world can anybody be any worse. They can't. We were never going to be anything special this year, but I would like to enjoy watching the Panthers again without thinking in my head that Delhomme is due for a couple of interceptions. Is there anyone on this post who is still surprized when Delhomme throws that pick six in the fourth quarter?

Hey guys: Have fixed that typo re: Panthers beating TAMPA BAY last December (and not themselves). Glad it gave a few of you a laugh! And thanks for pointing it out. Scott

I'm sick of Jake and John! Matt Moore may not be quite ready or may never be, but we will never know until he gets a shot. What better time to play a young QB when you have two of the best backs in the league, a very good offensive line(at times), and an improving defense! Fox, let's make the move! I guarantee Jake will play the rest of the season barring injury!

I've been a Jake fan since he jumped into that huddle vs. Jax in 2003. Great leader. Better team mate. Stand-up guy.

But it's done. Over. Finito.

We simply cannot continue to overcome the QB to win games.

Ask yourself this: When was the last time that Jake dropped back to pass and you didn't think "Oh-no"?

My man Peppers was sick today.2 sacks and a ff.He ran down down that wide reciever from behind(a DE mind you)like he was a CB.Beason needs to give Chris Gamble and Jake a holler and straighten them out next!Running and o-line was excellent though!!!

Who's the Jennifer chick...I'm in love!!!

Anywho...If the Special Olympics had football event...this would have been it.

It's sooo sad that you have to just smile and say "bless their hearts!!!"

Hey Jon can you call out your quarterback for throwing 2 ints? Didn't think so!!!

The Panthers have barely eked out two wins over two teams that are having abysmal seasons.
This is a sign of good times??
If you don't believe the Jake and Fox show is old and tired, you don't know the NFL.

Anonymous said...

To the Idiot that posted above me. You sir do not know anything about the NFL. I win is a win whether by a mile or an inch. No team in the NFL could stop the panthers run game today..and about Fox and delhomme, Sure, they suck. But if they can manage wins, why don't you shut the hell up.

Brad said...

Just imagine what they could do with a passing game too.

To the anonymous coward two posts above this,
You do not understand the NFL. The Bucs D made the Panthers run game look that good.

NFL should suspend Wesley. Fox has lost control of this team.

Unknown said...

I am a Panthers fan and glad that we won. But that was a cheap shot by Donte Wesley and it reflects poorly on the Carolina Panthers!

With everyone complaining about jake and special teams and what not. Lets all take step back quickly and think about this: it could be worse. We could be the titans. My god...

How is it this team boasts such talent but remains so eager to befuddle fans such as myself. Alcoholism isn't a disease, but merely the product of being a Carolina Panthers fan. Beason, Peppers, Davis, Gamble, Stewart, Gross, Otah, Williams, Smith. Coaching seems to be a major problem along with Jake. I remember a time when defending Jake to friends meant he led the Panthers to a win on the last drive of the game the following week. He leaves me with a feeling of heartbreak. As if he does this radical play on purpose.

On a positive and sobering note. How about that defense. Peppers playing like he's worth 1/16th of that paycheck. Seriously though quit hating the guy, the fans' outlandish goals of three sacks a game from him is just that, ridiculous.

The Panthers Won....they should win, they were playing against one of the worst teams in the NFL. 13 straight losses. Jake tried to give the game away like he always does. Everyone thinks we should beat the bills....the bills will stop the run and make jake pass....could be disaster !

Anonymous said...

I agree. Where is our Drew Brees. One gentleman said great job running the ball today and true that! Hats off to Deangelo and Mr. Stewart. I always have respected Jake and I love his heart and tenacity, he's a great guy. Nevertheless, we now need a new quarterback for the future, its time and it becomes more visible with every game. Jake is just too inconsistent. Management needs to see this and move foward accordingly. 2009 needs to be the last for jake I hate to say but I will anyway.

Jake you are a good guy with a lot of heart, but it's time to step down bro....the INTs are killing us, man.
