Jake's naked bootleg clinches 20-17 win

The Panthers just won their first game of the season, 20-17 -- with a naked bootleg from Jake Delhomme clinching the win at the end of the game.

The Panthers forced Washington to punt at midfield and needed a couple of first downs to ensure that Washington didn't get the ball back.

They got them -- first on a tough run by DeAngelo Williams and then, on third-and-8 from their own 25, on Delhomme's bootleg.

Delhomme faked to the left and then had to beat Washington cornerback DeAngelo Hall one-on-one to the right to make the first down. Hall had hold of him, but Delhomme fought through the tackle to barely pick up the first down.

He then jumped up, his left shoulder pad hanging out, and started celebrating wildly. For the first time in 2009, Carolina had won a game.

I do not think this team will lose another game this year. We looked like a Superbowl team. Great coaching and the players really looked good in pink. John Fox is a genius.

Panthers will not be winners until they have won more games than they have lost.

Oh wow you guys beat the deadskins. The Panthers still suck. Can't wait to see you guys play a real team so you can lose again.

Are you watching the same game as we all did? Superbowl team? Never lose another game?

We got LUCKY that we won this game. You are giving the Panthers WAY TOO MUCH credit. I'm glad Jake and the team was able to get it done, but if you are saying that we barely eeked out a win over the lowly Redskins was a sign that we're suddenly championship calibur, you clearly do not know anything about football.

The Panthers have a LONG way to go before you can say we've arrived and found our mojo. We couldn't run the ball worth a crap, and that's because teams are daring us to pass the ball in order to win the game. With a suspect passing game, our running game will stall, and we have one of the best running tandems in the NFL. That speaks volume as to how teams aren't afraid of Delhomme anymore and are daring him to make mistakes.

John Fox a genious? Again, you are blind...he got LUCKY by winning this game and keeping himself in the line of employment for another week. If we were to lose today, I think he'd receive the pink slip tomorrow effective immediately!

Okay. Jake gets a week of rest from me. I won't complain about him for at least 6 days 19 hours and 45 minutes.

Panthers showed some heart this 2nd half, even though they won on a wild muffed punt that set up the score. I'll give Jake some cred for playing well, but this should set them up to win next week at TB. Wouldn't go too far to say they will run the table, but at least they won't be 0-16

I hope you are not serious. I think you need to get a ct scan on your brain. Just because you guys beat the sorry ass Redskins doesn't give Super Bowl hope. Your Carolina kittens still suck.

It doesn't matter who we beat, we battled back and scored 18 unanswered points. Gritty win by the Cats.

jake had to bust a tackle to get the 1st. The man has always has heart.

What the hell does Chile please mean?

Wow, some of the people are dumb on this site. They still have to win eight out of twelve to have a good chance at the playoffs.

Good thing to get a win under the belt, dont know if we looked like a superbowl team haha, but nonetheless congratulations on a hard fought game. By the way how happy were you when they called that bullshit muffed punt call haha?

This Redskins team came in hyped from the getgo and we weren't... We fought through the early adversity and in the end looked like we just won the Superbowl. I think that now we have that preverbial monkey off our back, we might be able to overcome the ugly first 3 games and get this together. At the end it was like a switch was flipped in the way the players and coaches appeared. This win could be a really nice springboard.

PLEASE FIRE JOHN FOX!!!!!!!!! NOW

Fire john fox!

This game is about confidence, Jake badly needed this win, no matter how he got it. The fact that he was able to turn a naked bootleg where he should've been tackled at the line of scrimmage into a first down scramble will do more for his confidence than 400 yards passing and a bunch of TDs.

Now they have some positive momentum... step two is to see what they do with it!

No, actually, they have a chance to win 12 of 12.

That's why Fox sticks with him. Everybody struggles, too many quit. That's one thing Jake (unlike some of the guys - Peppers?)won't do.

nothing BS about the muffed punt either, the ball clearly hit the Deadskin players foot then the Panthers recovered.

MIXED EMOTINS,I want Fox and company gone, but it's damn hard to watch your team loose ,if you're a true fan,if you say it's easy to watch them loose , you're not a true fan.

I'm just glad I don't have to read another Monday am, "Should they bench Delhomme article from the great Fowler." What will he come up with now? Can't wait until tomorrow morning. Hey Scott, Can you finally find some original material?

Well what I saw today was an a team that still has problems. I saw a team that is still going to struggle. But I also saw a team start to get it's heart back. They had it ripped out in the Arizona game and they really hadn't gotten over that, I don't care what the players say. Their production tells the real story. I saw a team refuse to give up when to be honest I was about to. Yeah they got a lucky break. But every team with a winning record gets breaks. It's whether or not you capitalize. And they did. That's what winners do.

I saw the undeniable emotional leader of this team start to get his heart back. That run to ice the game was pure leave it all on the field Jake. And like him or hate him, I've done both, when he plays with heart we have a chance. Without heart he is pretty pedestrian. With it he can win you games he really shouldn't.

Are there no problems in Pantherland now? Hardly. Are we an unstoppable juggernaut? Come on. But are we the listless, heartless team that lost those last 3 games? I think maybe we got over that. It's what they do from here that will tell that tale.

Lastly I know as a fan if you didn't like what you saw today in the second half you should really get another hobby.

I must have missed this thread while watching the game, but after reading the first post and then people commenting on the dripping sarcasm, I found it very ignorant, about the players wearing pink....

If youve ever known anyone with breast cancer, or cancer for that matter, then you would know the pride those survivors have felt watching these last few weeks games, and grown athletic men supporting the cause....

Sarcasm is one thing, ignorance and disrepect over a diease that kills many women is another...

My sincere thanks to all those that look pretty damn hot in pink!!!!

part of sports is enjoying or getting upset at other teams fans. We love our team no matter what. We hate other teams for reasons we MOST of the time can't explain. One of the problems we have around panther Country is we have so many people here that are Fans of other teams. For me I think all of them should just go buy a ticket back to where you came from so you will be happy once more. If you don't like the Panthers don't watch them. If you watch them and don't like them you are proving what US true Panther fans already know about you. LOVE OUR PANTHERS! Win or loose us true fans will be here wek after week...win orloose.

What people fail to realize is yeah, the Panthers lost the first three games, but they were all against teams with winning records and playoff aspirations. Only one of those games was completely out of reach. The Panthers played well in Week 2 and Week 3, unfortunately not well enough to win. Not to mention, the Panthers were missing several players to start the year. Getting Chris Harris back will bring the physicality back to the D. Players feed off his big hits. And the impact of Hollis Thomas in the lineup was definitely noticeable. The turnaround is coming. Get your popcorn ready!
