5 things I didn't like in loss to Buffalo

Well, we could make this list a lot longer. But in the interests of time, here are the 5 things I didn't like the most in Carolina's 20-9 loss to Buffalo.

1) Kenny Moore's fumble. No, it wasn't all his fault. Not at all. But that punt-return fumble cinched the game for Buffalo just when Carolina had some momentum.

2) Jake Delhomme's 3 interceptions. That makes 13 picks for the season for No.17 if you're counting (compared to 4 TD passes, and still zero TD passes to wide receivers). You've got to think the Panthers will again consider a QB change at this point -- but John Fox is so wedded to Delhomme at this point it will be hard for him to pull the trigger.

"Like all positions we will evaluate it and whatever changes we need to make we'll make," Fox said of the changing-quarterback possibility postgame. Hmmm. That's not nearly as strongly as Fox generally defends Delhomme.

As I wrote following the Dallas loss on Sept.29, I've thought for awhile it's time for Delhomme to sit down -- not permanently, but at least temporarily.

3) 425-167. That's the total yardage in this one -- Carolina had the 425. And still lost by 11. That is just ridiculous, really.

4) Rushing game. Against the NFL's No.32-ranked run defense, the Panthers ran the ball just OK. Yes, they had to throw more because they were behind, but where were the 40-yard bursts in this game? The Panthers ran 25 times for 116 yards with a long run of a modest 17.

5) Defensive turnovers. The Panthers' D generally played well enough to win this one, but it lacked the one big defensive play that could have turned the tide. Buffalo QB Ryan Fitzpatrick looked very vulnerable -- a second-stringer on a below-.500 team -- but Carolina let him escape.

Jake needs a break. Give Moore a chance.

One of the hardest things to do is admit you made a mistake. Its time for Fox to be a man and own up to making one by hitching his wagon to Jake "The Mistake", and take the necessary corrective actions. He's going to have to take his lumps one way or another, time to stop worrying so much about looking foolish for his job security, and about winning... When you win, the job security takes care of itself...

It is way past time for delhomme to go. Give Moore a shot. If fox want bench his partner delhomme..fire him this week as well.
The D deserves better and I would refuse to play if they start Delhomme next week. Where do we get our money back for $ spent watching this pathetic excuse for a QB. jerry are you listening.

From Ownership to Towel Boy a truly PA=THA=TIC organazation.

What a lame experience to go out to a Panther game. Jut all in all out Lame experience.

Took my family to this sub-par high-school game. Man am I embarrased.

Pittsburgh, Dallas, Atlanta, even KC in a bad year,,, Why oh why did I take them to this lame game?

Jennifer said...

Scratch # 5 on the list...

Lacked the one defensive play that could have turned the tide?

Mr. Scott I have mad love for ya, but whats the score minus the points off Jakes interceptions and Moores fumble?

What tide did you actually want them to ride in on? One that gives the ball back to Jake for interception # 4?

Sorry but I said we would agree to disagree and the Panthers Defense was the only thing that looked like it was trying to make a game of it today!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I can't believe you left Kasey's two missed Field Goals off the list...

Anonymous said...

Wow! Losing to the Bills. Jake with three more INT's. Really though we would get back in the race today. Time to sit Jake down and bring John Fox out of the Twilight Zone.

Anonymous said...

No need for 4 and 5. It's kind of hard to place blame on the two phases of the game in which we played well.

Anonymous said...

I like Jake, but he has not played well. It's time to give Moore a chance.

Anonymous said...

they got the chica fired up today. I agree on omitting 4 and 5. The defense played exceptionally well today and dont blame the rushing game, blame the play calling.

Anonymous said...

Would the league let us put Smitty and Moose in opposing teams jerseys? Jake could complete a few more passes and at least make the games watchable....

Anonymous said...

Wait a minute... the defense didn't make big plays? Scott, what? Were you getting some popcorn when the defense scored a safety? Which, of course, counts as points and a turnover... search elsewhere for your fifth point... how about starting at the door of the Not-so-special teams coach... that guy is pathetic!

Anonymous said...

This entire organization is in trouble; just fired the executive group running the organization, the quarterback on any other NFL team would be benched (4-13), the coaching this year has been terrible, we have no future at QB, and no picks to get a good one. Our kicker can't kick off anymore so we are taking up two slots for one position. Not to mention that an Ice Tea in the stadium costs 5.00. Time for many changes, or they will go the way of the Hornets/Bobcats with no support!

Anonymous said...

I love Kasay. Whenever Fox plays intentionally for a FG, you can count on Kasay to miss it and make Fox look as bad as possible. You'd think it would teach the guy a lesson about being aggressive on offense.

Jennifer said...

Anon I doubt it was popcorn he went after, probably a double shot of something, considering the safety came after a Jake interception and score...

Probably needed it to soften the blow for the ones they knew would probably follow...(didnt let them down there).

j/k Mr. Scott....popcorn it was <:-)

Anonymous said...

It doesn't matter how good the defense your playing against is when you're playing with the same boring predictable offense that Fox originally brought with him? Everyone screams for Henning's job, and he leaves and establishes one of the most creative and intriguing offenses in the league with less talent on offense than we have. Were left the the common denominator... Fox and his "Lets start whoever makes the most money" mentality...

Anonymous said...

Do we really feel confident that if Moore doesn't drop the punt, because we know he and Captain can't bust a big return, that we can go down the field score a TD and a 2pt conversion. Odds are he saved Jake from throwing his 4th pick. We don't draft return guys and act surprised that we get what we have, nothing special.

Anonymous said...

To all the head-in-sand homers who said "Don't panic, it's only the pre-season" when we went 0-4: Can we panic now?

Jennifer said...

Hey Anon can I be a smarta@@ and answer that in a Coach Fox kinda way?

It is what it is...

Obviously his panic switch didnt flip today, and Jake got to increase his record for interceptions...

Anonymous said...

I can always tell when Atlanta looses because they are not writing on our blogs. These are passionate heart felt responses. I wish I had an answer. Fire Fox and Jake.

Anonymous said...

I have to agree with you. I am absoloutely convinced that even if Kenny Moore hadn't fumbled that punt that Jake would have thrown a pick on the next series. Or he would have been sacked and fumbled the ball himself of course.

kosspro4aa said...

...now, Scott, it's your turn...let's see; what were your words concerning "preseason?" "Fake Game #1"...no big deal; "Fake Game #2"...so..."Fake Game #3"...let's not get SO "down" over a few preseason games...ready to admit what the fans saw? A quarterback who, unfortunately, has lost both his "edge" and his confidence; an offense and defense that has lost direction, and a coach who (unfortunately again) has lost his team...

Jen: You are missing Desperate Housewives.

Anonymous said...

Jeff Davidson--didn't we get him from Cleveland that offensive juggernaut of the NFL? Give me a break.....It's going to be a long season. I just hope Mr. Richardson is just as disgusted as we are--enough to make some serious changes.

Anonymous said...

I believe John Fox wants a job with 49ers so he is doing his best to give them the highest pick possible form panthers as a bribe to give him a position on their coaching staff.

Jennifer said...

Anon obviously youre watching it so fill me in and I will keep you updated on the Giants, Cardinals, at half its 14-10 Giants...

Hey if some of the guys allow me to post about "PANTHER" football, then its ok by us girls, if you get your rocks off watching Desperate Housewives...Enjoy...

Anonymous said...

Just wanna put this out there for you kids. Going back to the playoff loss to Arizona last year....Jake has 19 turnovers in 7 games. Just sayin!

Anonymous said...

You replace Captain on the punt return, obviously concerned about a good safe play on the return, so you replace him with basically another rookie in Moore....while all along.....#89 is standing on the sideline wanting to touch the football. Smitty should have been back to return...but that would have taken coaching foresight and thought.....something we don't have.

Steve Gilmore said...

Well I have found out something for sure. Jennifer seems to know more about the game than the coaches. I don't just look at Jake as being 4-13. Go back midway last year and he is 11-25. This is not an aberration. Fox and Hurney have sold our souls to the devil in giving away first round picks at a whim. Our special teams are the worst in the NFL. Our QB is....get this...ranked 34th in the NFL...shoot me if I'm lying...out of 32 teams. The coaches are so unbelievably hard headed that our play calling was picked up by a 7 year old girl in front of me. Cute face paint though.
FIRE Fox, Hurney, and the rest of the staff. Send Jake to Arena football and get a QB that can actually pass more than 10 yards.

Kevin said...

scott, did you actually thought about this when you wrote it? defense didnt create big plays?????? hmm first of all, they wouldnt even allow a point if jake the mistake we hate didnt throw INTs...remember they returned the ball to the 7 and then on the 27??? lousy that you put that..and on the stop that we though T.O. was going to get the first down but he was denied..you dont think those were big? hmmm they didnt go over 175 yards and you dont think thats big?? lets just say if peyton manning, brees, or brady was the QB..that would be automatic "W"..ask peyton, brees, and brady what happens if their defense didnt allow over 175 yardage a game...automatic..think before you right, otherwise you'll make a fool out of yourself just like jake saying he hasnt lose his confidence..89 sure has..he told everyone at the begining of the season.."i hate you as a QB, but love you as a person''...

Anonymous said...

The problems start from the top, and Fox's inability to trust in his O line and running game on the 4th and 1 in the first half, but then goes for it at 4th and 2 in the second (when they knew he didn't trust them in the 1st), eptiomize this team's problems. Not ot mention Jake is just plain awful!!

Anonymous said...

The problem with this team is in the front office and the coaching.Julius Peppers saw it last year(trade me) and Steve Smith sees it this year(no longer an asset for the team another way of saying trade me) Other teams takes away Fox's main offensive and defensive weapons and he has no answer yet. Richardson refuse to go after what was obviously needed a QB (Vick couldn't have been worse).Maybe since the stadium is sold out regardless of attendance the urgency of the situation is not felt as it is with the Bobcats. Regardless of what some may say Brown has made the Bobcats interesting thats a lot more than can be said about the predictable pathetic Panthers.

Anonymous said...

I'm disowning the Panthers as long as they continue to start Jake! How many more mistakes Jake has to make before Fox realizes he's done. How many more games Jake has to ruin before a change is made. We have to much talent to get these unacceptable results. Get Fox OUT!!!!!! BENCH Jake permanently!!!!!!! Get a QB that can pass the ball and utilize Smith's talents..........

Anonymous said...

where was Jon Robinson tonight? Is he sick again? I hope not but I could tell that want him on the PA tonight.

Crohnkiller said...

Hate to say it, but there were a lot of Panthers fans all but scratching this up as a win and as any given Sunday goes..They lost. To a pretty bad Bills team. Fox needs to realize Delhomme sucks. He has reached the end of his road. 13 interceptions and what 3 touchdowns. Wow, talk about lopsided numbers! There wasn't much pressure on Fitzgerald either from what I saw. I also saw a lot of Bills fans at the stadium cheering on their team. But that was the last time in a few weeks that the Panthers have a chance on a win. just think of the great 1st round pick that the 49ers are getting of this team. Wow, they will be immediately improved! Oh well, there is always 2011...

Crohnkiller said...

Hey just think..The Panthers may have a shot in week 13 against Tampa Bay..but then again that one was pretty close...3 - 13..WOW!! The 49ers are getting a great pick!!!

Anonymous said...

I think Jake played a great game, for the Bills that is. After that first interception where Jake carefully laid the ball in the Bills hands the game was lost. There wasn't a person inside or outside that stadium watching the game that didn't know right then "HERE WE GO AGAIN". The tone was set and once again everyone was forced to sit and suffer, except the Panther players who had to bust their asses so Jake could try and get it to another Bills receiver. All this so Fox can show us he is right. It is just so wrong. Put in Moore. No, I don't even think he's much better but at least I could swallow my nachos when he throws an interception, he is just suppose to be the back up. I won't expect as much. At least the organization could trick me into thinking they are trying to do something positive. It would be easier to digest.

Scott shame on you! If I was the defense I would not understand what you wrote. If I was the O-line I would fall down at the snap repeatedly until Jake couldn't get up again. All the O-line does now is give Jake more time to figure out which opposing player he wants to throw the ball to. Please Please O-line take him out!

Anonymous said...

Ok let's get this straight one of the main reasons the play calling is so bad is because of Jake. I would imagine it goes something like this. "Ok Jakey throw a couple short passes so you can build up your confidence. That's good oh wow, you made one, now let's go a little longer. Oh darn Jakey you were intercepted, that's okay go sit over there and rest Johnny's not mad at you. We know your sad and you're trying really, really hard so we'll go back to some short ones and build up to letting you throw long. Oh darn intercepted again, don't worry Jakey your Johnny's boy." We will just repeat this week after week until turn 30 again.

Anonymous said...

I feel like I am watching a high school game and the quarterback is the principal's son and the head coach can't take him out or he'll be fired. What's the deal! What will it take.

I only have two things I don't like about the kitty cats.

1. Hurney/Fox
2. Fox/Hurney

"5 thing's I didn't like in loss to Buffalo

1. Jake started the game!

2. Jake throws 1st interception early in first quarter!

3. Jake stays in the game.

4. Jake throws two more interceptions and stays on field to finish game.

5. Fox not yet quite sure we need to make a change.

Anonymous said...

Bench Jake? Why? Because Smith was too short to catch his passes other than one that went for 43 yds? What about benching Smith and Moose?

What the did the sorryazz defense do yesterday but nothing?

While Jake seems to be a bit gunshy this can be attributed to his sorry WRs since one it too short and one too old.

Trade Smith for TO and the difference would be immediate.

Moore lost that game not Jake but the real letdown was Kasey missing 2 easy FGs.

When it rains it pours. Stop making scapegoats and improve for the next game.

Get the MOJO back intact and leave Jake alone you idiots. Hes OK but needs some help from the other slackards.

Anonymous said...

Jake you shouldn't be posting. Now hurry up and go get ready you're going to be late for breaffast with John.

Anonymous said...

Fox is not the problem but needs to become more risque and not be so conservative. Gotta take chances and clearly stiff Jonathan Stewart did not step up and get the job done when scatback flashy DeAngelo Williams got banged up.

There are 10 more games left.

The Panthers could win all 10 games if they get their act together and use the talent they have to the max and get rid of this bull*hit lame loser mentality.

Steal a line from the Fighting Irish and put up a big sign entering the field that says "PLAY LIKE WINNERS" and require all players to touch it before they hit the field !!!!!!!!!!

Unknown said...

Hahaha Scott Scott Scott, how can you blame DeAngelo and Stewart for NOT breaking a 40-yard run? And how can you blame the defense for, while playing a near-perfect game, NOT turning the Bills over? If you do this, not only do you have to blame Jake for throwing 3 interceptions but for also NOT having 3 spectacular touchdowns.

Thanks to Carolina for giving me more time on Sundays. I have no reason to watch them the rest of the season, I can maybe get something done, or watch other more interesting games.

Anonymous said...

I think the mess Carolina is in, goes back to the Peppers situation..Should have let him walk!..we traded our draft picks to shore up the position he occupies in case he was a holdout, picking Brown from Florida State, who is a good ballplayer, but our needs was not a defensive end at the time..then Julius decides to play, who wouldn't for a mill a game, this situation hurt us in draft position as well as salary cap..I don't care if Vince Lombardi was the coach, no new talent for a few years..would have liked to see Tim Tebow in a carolina uniform, but that is wishful thinking!

Anonymous said...

Jake Delhomme should burn in hell for the embarrassment he has brought to us. John Fox is nothing more than criminal with Richardson as rich mob boss. Charlotte has really gone down the toilet.

Anonymous said...

Trade Peppers now, get a draft pick back, there are some great quarterbacks gonna be in this years draft..AND PICK ONE!

Paul said...

I love Steve Smith but I firmly believe that his comments about not being an asset caused us the game strategy. From the beginning we threw the ball. We should have ran the ball down that last place rush defense and it was evident by how well we did in the few times we ran the ball.
The defense played a great game. They didn't create turnovers but they did enough stops to give our offense enough opportunities to put some points on the board. That safety was crucial and our offense just tanked out on the next opportunity. The defense can only do so much when the offense keeps generating turnovers.
By the way, there is a reason why we won the games we won. Our rushing game. One star player changed our game plan. This loss is on Delhomme, Kasay, Fox, and Smith. Hope Smith is happy having 99 yards more to his stats.

I have always stood up for Jake Delhomme because in the end QBs are hard to find in the NFL. He has always seemed to find ways to win in the past. He has 18 fourth quarter comebacks to his credit in a short career.

However, in the end, it seems his arm strength is gone. He does not seem to be able to hit the 20+ yard passes that are needed. If you want to be a running team, the QB has to be able to strike down the field. I think that the elbow injury has reduceed his arm strength to the point he is unable to hit these important passes. I think the Panthers need to start Moore to see what they have. If he is not the answer, they will have to go out and pay someone like Orton.

I think it is also important to remember that in 6-8 years as the Panthers starter he took them to the playoffs three times, two NFC Championship games, and the Super Bowl. On the big stage, he played Brady to a standstill. So for all the people like "bigkountry12" who are dumping on this guy, this should be a sad day in the Panthers franchise. The most successful Panthers QB in the franchise history is done. Back off the guy and say thank you for all that he has done.

I remember his excitement in his first NFL win against the Jaguars. That was refreshing and the way I will always remember this guy. It is too bad this is the way he will end his career.

Eight things I didn't like..ALL YEAR!

Anonymous said...

Please let Matt Moore have a shot at the QB spot for a few weeks. He can't possibly be worse and wiull likely be a heck of a lot better than DelHomme

Anonymous said...

The difference in the game was turnovers. The Bills D stepped up and forced some, the cats D did not. Yes, they made some good stops, but they couldnt get a stop when it counted and couldnt generate any turnovers. Do you really think Fitzpatrick is better than Delhomme? The Bills D is just better than the Panthers Defense. Bend but dont break.

John from Raleigh said...

I agree with the anonymous guy describing how great Jake has been for the team. Yes, he has been poor this year and should be benched but the hostility directed towards the guy is unnecessary. Since the first game when Jake took over for Rodney Peete the Panthers have been on a great run and have given me many a great Sunday. Even as poor as the offense played yesterday, until the dropped punt I thought we still had a chance to win.

What drives me crazy is listening to the announcers each week talked about how the Panthers are a running team and within the first quarter of each game it seems like we abandon the run and start throwing.

I will watch the rest of the games this year and root hard for the team each week but I hope Jerry R. makes some changes at the end of the year.

Go Panthers.....

Fox/Hurney bring in Davidson who was one of the worst offensive coordinators in the league when he was at Cleveland ,then we bring in Meeks for the defense ,who was just so-so at Iny but had Manning putting up lots of points to cover his real ability. We have the worst special teams we have ever had. we lost ALL our line backups in the off season. You throw Delhomme in the mix and the only thing left to go wrong is Deangelo gets hurt. Face facts even if they clean house(Hurney,Fox,Delhomme, etc.) we are screwed until 2011 maybe 2012. Don't we have a 1st round pick again in 2012??

We need to go out and get Jeff Garcia to replace Jake Delhomme. Period.
