It's Moore's job -- for now

I wrote a column in today's newspaper counseling patience for those who are ready to throw Matt Moore out onto the scrap heap after his three-interception performance in Sunday's 31-18 loss to the N.Y. Giants.

As it happens, Moore may have to give way to Jimmy Clausen for Sunday's game anyway, since he suffered a concussion late in the game and will have to pass a series of tests to get cleared to be back on the field.

But even if, say, Moore has to sit and Clausen plays well against Tampa Bay and the Panthers win (and if they can't beat the Bucs at home, they are in serious trouble), Moore should still start in Week 3 vs. Cincinnati. It's his job for now -- he wasn't impressive in preseason, no, but neither was Clausen (neither led a TD drive). And he was definitely the best QB in practice and the one the Panther players have the most confidence in at the moment.

Wasnt the td pass to Smith a scoring drive by Moore?

Oh you said in preseason, my bad nevermind.

Did you not see how impressive Armanti was in the two series he ran QB at Pitt? Three passes, dead on the money with steam. Even the TV commentators were impressed. Why not give him a chance? QB is his natural position so stop judging him on a couple of rough games at new positions in preseason. He has great poise, an underated arm, can create on the run and he could be the spark that the Panthers offense so desparately needs. Minimally, he would not have made the horrible poor decisions that MM made in the 2nd half vs. NY. Also, stop with the size thing! New Orleans doesn't seem to mind having a smaller QB and I think it's worked out OK for them! We are talking about 1" in height difference between the two men! Armanti has proven he's a leader and a winner on a national stage. Why not let him do it for a mediocre Panthers team as well??

Armanti Edwards isnt a sunday footbal player. Some guys just arent. Get over it!!!!

If you could provide one shred of logic, I would take you seriosly. You cant just say something and it is true. I would be interested in what you base your "isnt a Sunday player" comment on?? All he has done is win, win on a huge stage, set records, defy the odds, etc. Please share your rationale if you have any. Thanks!

By Fowler's logic, Rodney Peete should have gotten his starting job back in Week 2 in 2003 after Delhomme came in and beat the Jaguars. Moore should have been pulled before he got hurt because he wasn't checking off receivers, he was zeroing in on his targets and he was throwing into triple and quadruple coverages. If Clausen plays well Sunday the job should be his to keep.

Anyone who thinks Armanti Edwards should start for the Panthers knows nothing about professional football.

What I don't understand is why not give the keys to Clausen now?? We all know that Moore is a good guys and a decent quarterback, but is he the future?? No...there is a reason we took Clausen when he fell to us, and there is a reason Pike was taken in the 6th round. Pike will be Clausen's back up for next year. Moore is auditioning for his next team after this year is complete. I don't understand what Moore did in regards to being the man for the job. Yes he is 6-2(in games that didn't matter), but he is too a rookie. For the person who thinks Edwards is an NFL quarter back...C'mon Man!! I like Edwards potential hopefully as a multi use player, but a starting NFL quarterback he is not. Lets start the future now and get Clausen under center and let him learn on the job. Besides, all we need out of our quarterback is to manage the game, not lose the game by throwing 3 picks in the red zone. I think it is comical when coaches make the game more complicated than it is and also go down with the ship with the current quarterback. Now, Moore may have a good year, but do you see Richardson paying him after this year??? NO, so lets start playing the future now, which he is wearing #2 on the sideline. Go Panthers.

I think Moore deserves a season to have a chance. After all Fox stuck with Delhomme a whole lot longer than he should have. If Clausen or Pike is the "guy" seems like Moore could at least be the bridge for a couple seasons. No matter who's in there, this team won't win more than 6 or 7 games.

Whoevr is the QB come sunday, limt them to 20-25 pass attempts. To get either QB into a comfront zone, to throw when they have to.

Due to TB having to stack 8-9 guys in the box. Start Jarrett, Lafell played like he wasn't ready. Run the damn ball, when you are getting in the red zone Dvaidson.

If Clausen starts Sunday and finishes with a 110+ qb rating, why wouldn't you start him again? One big flaw I've seen with Moore is he just doesn't have enough arm strength to ever be big time. Reminds me of 1995 when Reich was the starter, but Kerry C came in. I couldn't believe the difference in velocity on the ball, and Kerry became the man. Pretty much the same the day Jake took over for Peete. Peete and Reich were basically just good backups. I think Moore is the same.

Moore doesn't have enough arm strength? Wow. He just needs to be more accurate.

Clausen hasn't shown he can throw the deep ball? 20-25 yards isn't very impressive. But asking some fans, its the greatest thing they ever seen.

Besides those throws, he made mostly check downs/flat throws that was turned into huge gians. You aren't going to win many games, throwing short passes.

He got away with throwing passes up for grabs in college. One mistake in the nfl, its a easy pick. Only time will tell, knowing this fanbase they will throw Clausen under the bus.

Tony P will be ask to start, lol.

Wow, would one of you Armanti haters please state a logical reason you dont think he's an NFL QB other than size(again, 1" diff between him and Drew)? What has he done(or not done)to show that he can't do the job? Have you heard or seen something that gives you such confidence in your comments? Please help me to understand because all I have seen him do at QB is play at a high level and win.

In regards to edwards, I don't 32 GM's in the NFL would miss on him if they think he is a NFL quarterback. I think he was a fine QB for App State, and won a lot of games. However, his arm strength is in question. He was brought here to play in the slot, return punts, move around in formations, play in the Wildcat, and just like Randle El throw a few passes on end a rounds. I personally think his size is a deterant and needs to get bigger for whatever position he plays. Is there a coincidence he was inactive this past Sunday? For him to contribute for us he needs to get better at running routes, catching the ball consistently, and returning punts. I hope Edwards works out for everyone, especially forw what we gave up to move up in the draft to get him. Go Panthers!

I can ensure you that those INT that happened in the redzone WONT happen again like that. That really was the main problem. Take that away and turn all of those into possible points. We win easily

Moore will probably will be let go after this year.

But ask yourselves, if Clausen was to get hurt. Do you want a project QB in Pike backing up Clausen? I sure wouldn't.

Moore has to have tade vaule, don't let him go without getting nothing in return. A 5th, 6th, or 7th round pick would be good enough.

People. Delhomme did NOT throw three picks and fumble three times in his debut as THE STARTER. We at least made it to the Bowl before he went downhill. Lets not just throw away the last of Steve Smith, DWill, and JStews good years with mindless "loyalty"

Unknown said...

Evan, i dont know if Edwards can be an effective qb or not but i have a responce to 1 of your comments. You said, Edwards at minimum wouldnt have thrown the 3 picks. How can you say that as a fact?

While I hate to be one of those calling for the QBs head after 1 week. They may be right for this reason: we aren't making a serious effort to win this year. That's beyond dispute. JR is building for 2011/12 with this youth movement, and clearing cap space to lock the winners after this season. So why not give the future QB some reps? From what we've read we shouldn't worry about the kids ego getting bruised.

In order to get anything for Moore you would have to franchise him. DUH, If you franchise him his pay is going to be more than he is worth unless he does really well & if that happens why would the Panthers trade him? Makes no sense. People need to realize you cant really trade players that are on their last year.

I dont know why so many people on here think we should throw Edwards off the team already. We have barely seen anything of him and I wouldnt at all count the preseason. You are probably the same bunch who wanted to throw Goodson off the team and now think he is a franchise player after the KO job he did this weekend.

mrbernz, You are right, I don't know that Armnanti wouldnt have thrown 3 ints just like MM did. All I have to go on are his career stats in college and what he proved he could do, even against the likes of Michigan in the Big House. Was 42-7 as a starter including 2 National Championships. Comp 768/1180 passes for 10,480 yrds, 74 TDs, 33 Ints. 2nd all time passing yrds for ANY college player...only Steve "air" McNair had more. Only college player to ever throw for >10,000yrds and rush for >4,000 yrds. Only 2 time Walter Payton award winner for best player in FCS. Other winners include Steve McNair, Tony Romo, Adrian Peterson and Brian Westbrook. You can say "yeah, but all this was against I-AA talent", but he couldn't control that, all he could do was the best he could and he DOMINATED against some pretty good talent! What makes everyone think he can't do it for the Panthers until he proves otherwise?? All they can go on is what they think. I'm just saying let's give him a chance based on what he has proved! Respectfully, E

Evan, seriously man, get real. There's three quarterbacks ahead of Edwards. He's not going to be a quarterback for this team. Even he knows that. Players more decorated than he was in college couldn't hack it in the NFL. He may only be an inch shorter than Brees but he also weighs 30 lbs less. Let it go, man, it's just not happening.

Where do they find screwball knuckleheadz like this?

Edwards should have never been drafted(as a WR). He should have been drafted as a QB. Evan is right on the "money" with his comments. Edwards is a proven winner! His physical size is not the issue. He has more drive, skill, and heart than any QB currently on the rooster. And who ever said he doesn't have the arm strength is flat out wrong. Give me a logical reason he should not be given a chance to QB.

Moore has earned that starting spot and one bad game doesn't take it away. Clausen isn't ready and neither is Pike.
The OL must protect better also; Moore didn't get his concussion because of a bad pass.
The OL must create some holes for the RB's; that OL makes real good money (can you hear me Jordan Gross)? Everyone on these blogs ragged on Peppers, but ever since JG got paid he's been nothing but a dead weight, holding penalty flop.
The DL has to develop a pass rush. Supposedly our secondary is the strength of our defense; dial up some LB blitzes and let's see. The only sack we had was with a Dan Connor blitz.

I wish the panthers would trade Edwards to a team that needs a good QB and has good intelligent fans. Charlott's fans deserve Clausen as a QB - maybe they can duplicate the frustration of the Atlanta fan over the last 40 years. I hope so they deserve it.

its doesnt matter whos behind center. until our players and coaches find whatever motivational tool they need to actually get amped up for a game were going to continue to see the results weve come to expect from fox and co.

obviously cash isnt a motivator or we would have signed pep to a major deal in 07. these guys are just going through the motions and doing the bare minimum to keep their jobs.

this lack-luster attitude has now reached the stands and the fans are losing interest.
