Get ready for QB quandary week

After John Fox's news conference Monday afternoon, the Panthers quarterback situation remains muddled although Matt Moore's head sounds like it is clearer.

Fox said repeatedly Moore would be "day-to-day" for Sunday's home game against Tampa Bay. He also said Moore may have sustained his concussion on the series before the one where he came out of the game, although Fox wasn't sure. The coach also said Moore "way better" today than he did Sunday.

With 3:50 to go, Moore was plastered on a sack up the middle and banged his head backwards on the turf. He fumbled and New York recovered.

The Giants gave the ball back four plays later, however, when Greg Hardy caused a fumble.

Moore came back into the game, got sacked again immediately by Usi Umenyiora and fumbled again. This time he came out. He went to the hospital, was evaluated and flew home on the team plane.

What does all this mean? Fox will likely stick with the "day-to-day" designation all week -- he's not about to declare Moore out or in for this game until he has to. As you know, Fox is like that.

Meanwhile, the Panthers will get rookie QB Jimmy Clausen ready in case Moore can't go. Fox said he thought Clausen knew the plays well enough that the playbook wouldn't need to be simplified for him.

The real indication on who will start will come in Wednesday and Thursday's practices when we see who is getting all the time with the first team.

My guess? Fox and the Panthers medical staff will do everything they can to avoid starting Clausen in Week 2 -- they think it's too early. But Moore will have to pass some doctors' tests to get back on the field, so it's probably one the Panthers will either announce Friday afternoon (once all the game-planning in Tampa Bay has been done) or not until Sunday just before kickoff.

I don't have a problem with keeping Moore on the shelf for a week. If it indeed was a concussion, I think a one game sit should be mandatory for any player. Head injuries are just too sensitive and far too common these days.

TB would be a good test for Clausen, but our secondary needs to get its act together. Given Moore's relative inexperience, getting our rookies more snaps is probably a good thing.

Unless we clean house this week there is NO chance at a win in Tampa. Our O-line is laughable. Joe Montana could not win with this group. Add that to Fox and his moronic play calling, Bucs-34 Cats-21

"Fox said he thought Clausen knew the plays well enough that the playbook wouldn't need to be simplified for him."

handoff, handoff, incomplete, sideline. handoff, handoff, incomplete, sideline. lather, rinse, repeat. Yeah, Clausen can handle that.

Pike is the best quarterback on the team, Im just saying!

Does "I'm just saying" mean "This is nonsense, I don't believe it and nor should anyone else"?

Hope Clausen can make better decisions while running for his life. That was the worst the o-line has played since last years opener.

I'm so sick of people saying pike is the best. He sucks or he would have gotten more snaps.

Here it goes again. Blame the QB and coach. Same ole same ole. Blame these 2 guys as usual and the rest of the sorryazzez get a free pass. Smith got an easy td pass a 7th gradeer could catch and of course showed his clowny azz as usual beating on the broken arm cast. What an idiot. He prob knocked the screws loose.

I think you have a few "screws loose"

ARMANTI EDWARDS

John W. said...

Only after the three roster QBs and an unnamed free agent have gone down should Armanti Edwards be called on to take snaps as the regular pivot.

Georgia Southern ain't on the schedule.

Actually Armanti is the best QB on the roster!

Moore's not the problem - the problem is our secondary - especially GAMBLE - whoever said he was a shutdown corner is smoking CRACK - He has never been anything but an interception seeker - he ALWAYS goes for the big play and never for the tackle - go back - watch the film - he SUCKS!!

I was impressed by Clausen's composure in the end zone. Talk about getting thrown to the wolves. He's a fighter, I liked what I saw.

Well there is good news "SellNowBigCat!!" The game is in Carolina. I know schedules are hard to read, especially the ones that are color coded. The Panthers will be fine, don't hit the panic button. We never start out fast. I also think that Giants team may be the class of the East. Everyone breathe deep, you will see a HEAVY dose of D-Will and the Daily Show this coming Sunday, as the Panthers start out 1-1, and 1-0 at home...you're welcome.

I think that Clausen is and will be a better QB than Matt Moore but I hate to see him have to start like this. I would have liked to have seen him get some work with the 1's in preseason at least. I like Moore but the biggest problem he has is the same problem that Jake had and that is.. He throws the ball up for grabs.. too many floating lob passes. You cant do that in the NFL. Clausen throws the ball like it's on a rope, but would be better served if he had more time to learn the Offense.

yeah Ed, Clausen looked awesome with those two incompletions.

I want Clausen to start so the Clausen fans can see him roll out 20 times.

I watched tony Pike for the last two years andhe is the real thing! We play clausen first because we have a much bigger investment in him (it is a business, ya know). I am just glad we had the good sense to keep Pike and move Edwards.

I guess Marshall/Captain M gets a free pass? Both of them gave up a td/was torched all day.

Can you cover a receiver 5-10 seconds without a pass rush? As far as the tackling goes, did he had 93 in 08. Average around 70-75 tackles a year throughout his career.

But i guess that average to you.

I haven't seen enough of Pike to comment on him but take a look at this video and you will see the difference in how Clausen and Moore throw. And yes before anyone says anything I know it's Hawaii. I just like how decisive he is and how quick the ball comes out and unless he is leading a guy deep the ball stays low and gets there in a hurry.

I'm not saying I'm ready to bail on Moore... and the offensive line was TERRIBLE yesterday. With that said, did you see those INT's? I mean... those were rookie mistakes. IF he's going to play like that, you might as well play Clausen who we ALL know will eventually be a better player, or at least has four times as much talent.

HEY!! I was pulling for Matt. BUT, watch him.. he has that deer in the head light look.. He really does.. Start Clausen

Is this not the same offense we had when everyone said we had to get rid of Henning? Who went on to Miami and jump started the Wildcat craze!

Davidson is not the problem, it's FOX he has changed both coordinators several times and the product is always the same on both sides of the ball. I'm so sick of Foxball, it's boring, predictable, and 20 years old.

Not a Clausen fan but he was drafted in the 2'nd round. Tampa is as good as any team to start your NFL career if he is to have one.

Clausen is ready. I'm just not sure about the rest of the team. Thanks, John of Concord for the YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRgGpMhNb4E). That's an awesome performance. Too bad Claussen doesn't still have Golden Tate to throw to.
And we didn't go after T.J. Houshmandzadah because ...?

I doubt Moore will practice this week which means he certainly won't play Sunday, they're very careful with head injuries. Charley Martin is also likely out next week, which makes it more likely that Edwards will be active.
I would expect Clausen along with Edwards and the occassional wildcat for Sunday. Of course, we're all just guessing. Either way, I expect a better performance this week.

One thing I'll say for Munnerlyn...At least we saw him the MOST out of the other two stat-padding corners in Gamble and Marshall. I'll take an effort like that from 3 Munnerlyn-type players than Gamble and Marshall anyday! Way to go Cap! Thank you for playing with heart.

Some of these multiple posting idiots need to refrain from telling this board where you are from. Noone gives a ratz azz what dinky little joint you are from. Just state your case and move on.

Scott is anything ever NOT muddled after a Fox press conference?

What happened Sunday was largely not Moore's fault - the O line stunk to high heaven, the playcalling was just plain stupid, and our secondary was like swiss cheese. We failed to adjust at halftime and the Giants took the lumber to us.

I hope Moore, the O line and our secondary come back with a vengeance on Sunday. They can change; after watching this for 7 years, I am convinced Fox will not.

Come on everyone! It's the glass half full or half empty situation here!!!!

We are only half as bad as the rest of the league or we are half as good as the rest of the league!!!

Go Panthers!!!!!

Appalachian State 34, Michigan 32. Who was the QB at State for that game???

All I know is that Armanti Edwards would not have made the poor decisions that MM made in the 2nd half. Those of you that have not actually watched the poise that this kid has really don't know what you are talking about. He can create on the run, makes great decisions and has a much underated arm...did you see the 3 passes he threw? Dead on with steam! The Panthers certainly need an offensive spark...Armanti is the answer.

All I see is I want this person to start vs. him not starting. I dont see anyone saying its a bad spot for our team to be in period. Matt the starter, knows the system. Got a concussion of all injuries. And Clausen is NOT READY for you dumb nuts who think so. He's not
