That's better, Tiger

I was glad to see Tiger Woods opened up a bit today about what he called his "transgressions." It wasn't in the forum I would have chosen had I been advising him (a statement on his website) but at least it made him seem a little more human and a little less "I'm Tiger and I don't have to bother with the little people except to tell them what club I hit and which car to buy."

Tiger's admission comes in the wake of news of a 31-month affair he allegedly had with a Los Angeles cocktail waitress. She apparently kept voice mails, texts, e-mails -- the whole bit.

As I wrote earlier this week in this column, I still think Tiger should face actual questioning from actual reporters. He could "no comment" as necessary, put a more human face on this story and more quickly make it all go away.

But, to be fair to Tiger, putting a statement out like this had to be hard for such a private person, and I commend him for doing that much.

He does not owe the public any other comments other than what he has supplied. If the tables were turned Scott, I think you would be whistling a different tune. He only owes an explaination, apology or whatever he feels is needed to his family. Now can we let this rest and get on with more important issues.

To Anonymous commenter @ 2:06 PM -

You're a coward for not putting your name to the racist cliche. Hopefully Scott will see it for what it is and delete it.

Poor form.

Sid.

What he did was wrong, and inexcusable. He and his family will now pay for that... However, you really have to wonder about the woman involved in this, and her motives from the beginning. A person would only keep voice mails, text messages, emails etc. for 31 months if your planning for the relationship to fail at some point, and you can make a quick buck selling all this stuff to the gossip rags, cause its Tiger Woods. He was wrong, and she is wrong, and ultimately they both will pay for what they are doing.

Anonymous said...

I agree they both did wrong.

He got what he wanted ( a few more swings off the course) and now she is getting attention and money.

the cost was too high on it, it's a big problem these days.

learn from others mistakes. Love your spouse and respect your promise.

Didn't know you could save voice mails and texts for 31 months...good to know.

Is that all we are going to get from Tiger Woods???

So much for Tiger as a role model
and for the founding principals of The Tiger Woods Foundation.

Another one bites the dust...

It is an interesting comment concerning why black women aren't offended by the actions of these high powered black athletes choosing to lay up with white women? This isn't meant to be a racist comment but why is this mostly the case? Aren't black women desirable enough for the black super stars to co-mingle with?

I would strongly suspect that the 3rd commenter is black.

It amazes me to see these racist comments come out like this. The only thing I can say about the south is that there really is a solid percentage of the population that is truly ignorant. No other way to put it.

Anonymous said...

stating that "a solid percentage" of southerners are racist. By making such a generalization, aren't you guilty of the same mentality of the racists that you are criticizing? I get so tired of ignorant, transplants making generalizations about southerners and the south. If you don’t like living here, please do the rest of us a favor and leave.

The commenter who talked about the racist mentality of the south I don't know who you are, but you are completely correct. I have lived my whole life right here in charlotte. When something like this happens it's amazing how many people sound as if they are active members of the kkk. When people make those kinds of comments you know how they regularly feel about blacks. Charlotteans don't want to be known as a city that depicts racin and wrasslin (that's racing and wrestling to my northern bretheren), but that's just what it is. This is a very racist city. Currently the play of Jake Delhomme is a hot topic. Those of you that weren't here would be surprised to know that when he got the job many of the white fans were just glad to get rid of a aging but solid Rodney Peete. So the first white quaterback that came along loked like Joe Montana to them. When in reality the guy never has been good at all.

Anonymous 2:06- you're worse than Tiger...idiot. Interesting how there are so many "anonymous" people out there when it comes to discussing race. This isn't about race, no matter how badly you want it to be. This isn't about Charlotte's "mentality" or the cultural differences between the south and other parts of the country (trust me, there is just as much racism in Boston, New York, Chicago and Seattle as there is in Charlotte- I've lived all over the country); this is about a failed person, husband and father. Simply tragic to have the whole world in your hands and forget about what's truly important in life. He has left a permanant scar on the heart of his family and his fans. What a short sighted tragedy.

Scott,
You know that if you were in Tiger's shoes you wouldn't be as forthcoming with any information to the public either. Also, if you could get some babes as hot as the ones Tiger gets you would take advantage yourself.

Anonymous said...

Scott, how is posting "no comment" to "actual reporters" better than asking for everyone to respect his privacy? He is no more/less human than anyone else. He owes us nothing outside of his role as a professional golfer. I am extremely disappointed with your posting. You added nothing to the topic and displayed yourself as being very narrow-minded..Could you please provide a more thought-provoking, intelligent post next time?

The people who respond to these Observer blogs are, for the most part, stupid or racist. It's like we're in Charlotte, North Carossissippi, Carobama, whatever.
1.) It's OK for black people, namely black men to marry white women. It's OK for blacks to marry Asians, have children, and the children to marry white women....
2.) People are flawed, even your pastor :(
Charlotte Observer, every f----g article on this website has the most horrible people responding with the most disgusting and uneducated, fearful viewpoints. It's time to consider disabling this option so as not to allow your readers to look so misinformed. It reflects poorly on this region as well as this publication.

For the ignorant uneducated brainwashed, the real true America is the south where it all began 500yrs ago and where all the great intellects and founding documents originated.
Washington the father of this nation along with Jefferson, Madison, Davis, Lee and all the rest were the true intellects and creators of America. The north was an accidental mistake when the Pilgrims headed south blew off course and landed in Northern Virginia later named Massachusetes and stole the New England name. The south is and always has been the real New England and New Europe for that matter.

The real America is and always has been the south and why over 100 million have already relocated in the great southern migration shift correction escaping the filthy giant diseased crime ridden cesspool concrete jungles of the accidental northern mistake so long ago.

Americans are technically all southerners in spite of the temporary ignorance of some vagabonds who will come around eventually as they empty out of the erroneous north to their real home in the real America like so many have already done. Welcome home. Its your destiny.

Oh gee whiz. Thank you so very much Mr. Eldrick T. Woods for coming clean better known by your stupid nickname "Tiger".

We hope she takes everything and leaves you in broke and destitute after you ruined the game who put you on a pedistle and took you from rags to riches only to have you throw it all away. OJ deja vu without the murders.

You make America and all sports look bad in front of the whole world and for that you need to crawl in a hole and expire.

I will continue to say that anyone who expects Tiger to hold a press conference and spill all the gory details is nothing more than a celebrity-obsessed, wealth-envious loser. Scott Fowler appears to be especially celebrity-obsessed and wealth-envious. Consider his statement "but at least it made him seem a little more human and a little less "I'm Tiger and I don't have to bother with the little people except to tell them what club I hit and which car to buy."

Please explain to me why a man who does not want to publicly discuss intimate details of his marriage and family life is arrogant! You only see it as arrogant because you are jealous of his immense wealth and want to cast him in the worst light possible, and the way to cast him in such a light is to hear every detail of his sex life.

I have a very sound marriage, and I don't want to discuss intimate details about it with anyone, and no one has the right to ask. How much more so would a man who appears to have infidelity involved in his marriage want to keep those details in-house?

As for the woman who is singing about this affair, it's obvious that she is looking for a payday. I'm certain the day she met Tiger, that was foremost on her mind, knowing if she could get him into bed she'd be set for life financially. Just another skank who wants riches without working for them.

Good points. Can we see what going on here? Are we not worthy girlfriends? These trophy white female golddiggers know how to lure our successful black males dont they? Look what happened to Steve McNair. In the end we know all these golddigger hoochies end up with all the money possessions and everything else. Wake up girlfriends. For real.

So he made a mistake. Yes, this is bad, but he is just a man, not some god. I like him more now that he seems more relatable to a normal person. So many jealous haters out there.

Come on man, that's just stupid. A "solid Rodney Peete"? Really? I mean, REALLY? Not to mention, do you remember what happened that season when Jake stepped in? Something called the Super Bowl? And in the game where he came in at halftime (I was there)...how we came back from getting our tails whipped to win in a TD pass to Ricky? You honestly think you can say with a straight face that a) Rodney was doing well but was yanked for no reason and b) Jake didn't do well when he stepped in that year?

Get a grip...this whole city is not racist because a few boneheads posted stupid comments on here. Besides, stupid comments on these blogs seem to show up pretty regularly - racist or not.

I've heard plenty of people on the Panthers blogs screaming for Vick. Doesn't sound very "Joe Montana"-ish to me. I never once heard anyone say anything about him being black. A dog killer, a womanizer, a STD carrier, a horrible passer - yes, I've heard those. But never one because he is black.

Get your head out of your you know what Kenneth.

Kobe Bryant had a similar incident a few years ago and is now as popular as ever. Tiger will buy a diamond ring for his wife and be more discreet in the future. A couple of years from now this will be a footnote as Tiger passes Jack Nicklaus' 18 major championships and becomes the greatest golfer of all time. Right now this is a big deal but our nature as error prone humans is to forgive and time will make us forget.

You are all assuming that Tiger actually wrote what was posted on his site. They are just words until you see and hear him say them with emotion. His entire public image may be a total sham. Of course, that won't matter much after he wins his next major. I would like to see a little social justice when he is announced on the first tee at The Masters. "Quiet, please. On the first tee, from Windemere, Florida. Tiger woods" The sound of one hand clapping, maybe a few crickets chirping...just a though.

Funny how noone has mentioned these 3 single females this scumbag piece of trash has been committing adultry for years may be only the tip of the iceberg?

There is mention in other media outlets he may have brought home some type of sexually transmitted disease to his faithful naive wife and how this was discovered after she visited a physician.

Reportedly he is paying her to stick around and upped his prenup to 300 million to her.

This lowlife rat is nothing but a piece of worthless trash and anyone defending him is no better.

Curtis,

I just read your response and indeed I stand by every word that I posted. I'm sure that you were at that game when "Shaky Jake" took over. I wasn't there in person but I watched every minute of it on tv. Rodney Peete wasn't playing near as bad as Jake has played the last 2 years. The Arizona loss wasn't his first terible game last year either. Let me tell you that I am a die hard Panthers fan, but the simple truth is that white fans have allways overated Jake. Everyone wanted this organization to have found there golden boy quaterback. If the guy was good I would give him all the credit in the world. He has allways been extremely inaccurate, and even worse in decision making. Steve Burlein played here with far less talent and was getting hammered because the offensive line was horrible. But for my money he's the best quaterback we've had. Since you metion the Superbowl year go back and look at that year. Jake may have played his best game ever during the Superbowl. But all of the other games weren't anything to write home about. He's allways thrown behind and way too high for our receivers. The difference is when you had Smitty and Moose in their primes they could out jump defenders and come back to get those balls. They either can't or don't want to do that now. We got to the Superbowl that year because we played good defense and because Stephen Davis ran for over 1400 yards in his last all pro season. If we can demad consitent play from every other position we should do so at quaterback too. Delhomme has been a model of inconsitency.
