5 things I didn't like in loss to Miami

And away we go: Thanks for all your suggestions for the traditional "5 Things" in the comments on the previous blog post. I incorporated some of them into this.

1. Defensive pressure and tackling. The Panthers’ defense gave up three touchdowns to Ricky Williams, who is a good back, yes. But he’s also 32 years old and wasn’t good enough to start in Miami until Ronnie Brown got hurt. Yet Williams was nearly unstoppable and broke off a 46-yard run that was the play of the game with 3:55 left in the fourth quarter. Plus, Carolina never sacked Chad Henne.

2. Offensive playcalling. I know Carolina was behind most of the game, so sure, you’ve got to throw more. But DeAngelo Williams should have rushed for 180-200 yards in this game. Miami could not stop him. And he gets 13 carries?? DeAngelo went for 122 yards – 9.4 a pop – anyway. But it should have been more for the Panthers’ most consistent offensive weapon.

How about this sequence on Carolina’s first offensive series -- first-and-goal at the Miami 7? Incomplete pass. Incomplete pass. Sack. Field goal.
Please.

3. Jake Delhomme. Can’t leave the Panthers’ embattled QB out of this list. He threw 42 times, but never had a completion of 30 or more yards. Steve Smith had 87 yards and a TD but could have had a lot more had Delhomme just not sailed a couple of deep balls over head of an open No.89.
And while that final last-gasp drive had a possibility of greatness, throwing the alley-oop from the Miami 26 (especially at Dwayne Jarrett!) is not a very good idea. Throw a bullet like Brett Favre would, straight at Smith, and let him leap high and win or lose it for you.

4. The pass blocking. Wow, does Jordan Gross ever make a difference. Delhomme was sacked four times. Left tackle Travelle Wharton just couldn’t handle Joey Porter, and there were other leaky spots, too.

5. Special-teams coverage. Yes, Miami's Ted Ginn is a force on kickoffs, but a 42.5 return average is simply not acceptable. Jason Baker also hit a horrible punt that got run back 22 yards to set up Miami’s second touchdown.

if we are lucky, we beat Tampa and finish 5-11...that may be enough to get Fox, and Hurney-a, out of town at long last. Of course, assuming Jerry wakes up out of his coma he has been in since last December and shows some life and still cares about winning, which could be a stretch at this point.

Craig said...

Come on man no need to take a cheap shot at Jerry. That was uncalled for.

Fox is not going anywhere, he is a good coach with faith in a bad qb. Delhomme was his horse in this years race & it lost. Fox is still a good coach, the play calls would have been good if they had a qb that could throw a pass. I agree they should have ran the ball more , especially in scoring positions, but a real qb should also be able to score. ! good thing from this is, maybe we will get to try Moore out a couple games this season & see what he does for next year. Also, the Panthers need t work on some pass blitzing. Henne had like 1.5 minutes to complete that, what was it 3rd & 12 in the last 5 minutes of the game when it was still time to go ahead down by 3. That was a bad job on the defense. I still think the Panthers will win a couple more games, Fox will keep his job but i think the end will be here for Delhomme after this season.

Panther fans, WHY are you so surprised with this loss. I wasn't. Here's why:
1- Panthers were favored
2- Panthers played at home
3- The game did not have a Sunday 1pm start time.

Something about the team game preparation makes this a very frequent scenario for a loss.

Anonymous said...

It is time for the Panthers to accept the fact that there will be no playoffs this year. With that said, put Moore in for the rest of the season.See if he can use the time to gain experience and prove one way or another that he will be our new quarterback or we will have to look elsewhere.

Anonymous said...

13 carries for DeAngelo versus Delhomme taking it to the Air WAAAAYYY TOO MUCH in the first half...The formula for recent weeks success abandoned...Very dissapointing...

John Donaldson said...

WOW!!! We really are as bad as everyone says. I didn't believe it until we lost, like this, in a game we had to win.

Anonymous said...

I think the only way Moore starts is that Richardson orders Fox to put him in.

Anonymous said...

I have long been a Fox defender. Those days are done. He and his coaching staff needs to be whacked - right after Hurney is giving his walking papers.

Play calling, draft selections, pitiful performance on defense, failure to utilize an obvious strength in the running game all reveal a lack of sound judgment. Bad decisions lead to bad results.

I like Jerry Richardson. He's a class act, but he has been too slow to move on this situation. Although I think firing his two boys was a warning for Fox and this pack.

Let the season end and the wooing of Bill Cowher begin.

Anonymous said...

Goodbye Fox and Hurney! There was some good times . . . mostly bad. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. Jeff Davidson - I hear they're hiring at Wendy's. Good luck to you. Jake, you've been amazing at time and I love your drive. You've had a good career - thanks.

Now - let's get Cower in here and move on.

No one has brought up peppers! The million dollar man got his butt handed to him by Long last night. He should have to pay a million dollars back for every game he doesn't get a sack or make a tackle! Its time to start the losing process so we can clean house next year!

Anonymous said...

Jake's passes sail, playoff plans fail.

Jake Delhomme said...

I'm sorry guys, I played poorly last night...it's not my fault, though, Fox is trying to save his job and won't bench me b/c he knows Moore sucks too. My bad.

Riverbuck said...

Does anyone know...if D. Williams has mono or asthma? How can you run a guy only 13 times that averages 9 yds per carry unless he is sick. Have you ever noticed when he gets in A groove and breaks off a nice run, the Panthers always remove him from the game? What sense does this make? He is one of our biggest gamebreakers and we run him 13 times. Does he get a pay cut when he plays half the time?

Please don't try to tell me he is tired. He trains all year to play pro football and has to go over and sit if he runs a 40 yd dash. Hell he has 5-10 minute breaks everytime our defense gets on the field and allows our opponents to convert on 50% of their 3rd downs.

Ricky Williams looked pretty fresh last night at 30 + years old pounding the rock consistently for 4 quarters with the Dolphins.

This is unreal! Then you get these yahoo fans that don't know sh*t trying to take up for their team. Real fans get pissed when their team is rotting on the vine. Like I do with my tomatoes:(

Sportsdon said...

The 40 yard incomplete overthrow to Smith on 3rd and 1 was insane.
That's not a throw to even attempt with our running game as strong as it is and Jake's total lack of accuracy on the deep passes. One example as to why they are so awful on 3rd down conversions this year. 3-13 in this game!

Anonymous said...

We had to trade for Josh/Luke Mcown?

Why couldnt we get Henne?

FireFox said...

I said in the previous blog that I predicted the Panthers would lose 21 - 17. I was pretty close on that one. The Panthers are a very talented team with no coaching. The Dolphins are a fairly talented team with excellent coaching.

When FoxHurn is fired at the end of the season I hope Jerry says, "It is what it is".

MW said...

Five things:
1. D-Will only carried 13 times?
2. D-Will only carried 13 times?
3. D-Will only carried 13 times?
4. JAKE THREW 42 TIMES!!??
5. D-WILL ONLY CARRIED 13 TIMES?!?!

Whoever posted that Fox is a good coach is on acid/crack/meth!!! I don't even understand how someone could say that with a straight face! It'd be like Phil Jackson not letting Jordan get the ball back in the day then saying he is a great coach!! F-ing 42 times! Are you serious. 1 & goal and we're passing? WTF??!! I have officially lost faith with this coaching staff! End of the season can't get here soon enough! Thank God college basketball has started!!

I actually laugh when I see that written now.

Mr. Scott mentioned on another blog that hes gonna be at a book signing Saturday and ironic enough...in his book The Tales From the Carolina Panthers Sideline...Chapter 4 is titled...John Fox..It Is What It Is...

Its a great read everyone...

Fox a good coach? Whomever was involved in giving Jake a new contract needs to go along with Fox and Jake.
At best they are a second rate team in a second rate town.

PanthersRus said...

Scott,

Love reading your posts but one week the Cats aren't passing enough and now their not running enough? Miami passed the ball last night a few times when they shouldn't have but it just so happened that it worked out for them not us.

After reading your posts sometimes I feel like your the one who is really calling the plays. JK

Anonymous said...

Can we please lose every game from now on so fox and davidson can leave. My little sister could call better plays than him. Run the D&*% ball please. If I was deangelo, I'd ask to be traded.

Anonymous said...

Until the panthers replace Fox and Delhomme they will never be a contender. Richardson will not deal with his reality that Jake is overpaid and Fox is an average coach. The panthers have too much talent to be a 4 and 6 team.

Anonymous said...

Enough is enough, please, please, please, please get Sir Fox-a-loss and Hurnia out of here,so we fans can have something to look forward to in the future. PLEASE !

Matthew Threatt said...

Scott, I know everybody has Panthers trade scenarios, especially at quarterback.

Count me in too.

I think that Jason Campbell isn't damaged goods and plays in a system that isn't suited to his skill set.

They don't like him, he doesn't like them, an could be had for a song

Anonymous said...

This has to be the worst-coached game I've seen in a very long time. For all the previously stated reasons. Whenever the Panthers do run sucessfully they feel like they have to prove that they can pass it too. I mean wtf? If it ain't broke don't fix it. Miami couldn't stop the run so why'd we stop running?

Fox must go after this nonsense. Injuries are one thing but if you know that its gonna be hard to give Delhomme protection with Gross out why would you have Delhomme sit in the pocket waiting to get sacked? Frickin idiots.

Curtis Watkins said...

Well, I decided at the last minute to snag a ticket while standing out in front of the Dog House. Got a great seat, second row from the Dolphins bench, for dirt cheap. Before I went in it seemed like money well spent.....

It's hard to follow these things when you are sitting in the stadium since there are no announcers and so much is going on. But after reading the stats this morning, I'm appalled. I knew that Jake was thowing more than any of us would have liked, but 42 time? 42 times?! Any way we can submit this to that news segment they do on SNL called "Really?". Really John Fox? Really Davidson? Jake, 42 times, while Dangelo only carried it 13? Really?!

Scott summed the playcalling up perfectly with this: first-and-goal at the Miami 7? Incomplete pass. Incomplete pass. Sack. Field goal. Please.

This team did everything last night we knew we couldn't do if we wanted to win. Jake threw it too many times and too early (read the series above on our first goal possession) . Our best offensive weapon, Dangelo, didn't get the ball nearly enough. Special teams, good grief - you know, at this point in the season with how bloody awful they are on coverage - just kick it out of bounds the rest of the way. I mean, we all knew, if Ginn Jr. touched it enough times he would kill us. Reading his yards, he sure did.

I talked earlier about the coaches finally doing something the past 3 games that captures what this team can actually do, and then they go out in this game and blow that right out of the water. Sigh.

It's a sad day when you are walking out of the stadium in early November, 10 games into the season, and your Facebook post reads: Wow. Miami, at home, a loss. Pack it up boys and girls. The season is done.

Anonymous said...

I love reading all you people that think Cowher coming here is a done deal, or actually a good idea. I like Cowher, but the man won ONE super bowl in 15 seasons, and the one he won was handed to him. He was as up and down as Fox is. And he's not coached in 3 seasons.

With that said, I think it's time for a change. Jeff Davidson is not a good OC. He gets flustered really easy and can't make up his mind sometimes on what play to call. I swear it looks like he has no game plan, just show up at the stadium and we'll wing it.

I was starting to warm up to Meeks, but my god, the tackling on this team sometimes is worse than NC State and I didn't think that was possible.

Both of those guys are the responsibility of the head coach.

Also, someone mentioned bad draft picks in the comments here. Really? Every 1st rounder in the Fox/Hurney era is a starter except Stewart. If you want to have some fun and a more educated response sit down and do the research and find me a team not named Pittsburgh that has had more draft success than the Panthers.

nemov said...

I'm not sure why everyone is so shocked? We had three days to prepare for a game after losing our best offensive lineman. Our defense has a lot of season ending injuries. Plus, we don't have any decent QBs.

This is not a recipe for a successful season. Replacing the coach isn't going to change things. Great QBs don't grow on trees. Tampa has never had a great one.

Anyone who thinks Fox is a bad coach is an idiot. If he's fired at the end of the season he won't be out of work for very long.

Curtis Watkins said...

On a lighter note (thankfully no one was hurt), I just read the story about the Panthers fan who hit Steve Smith on the way to the game because "He was in a hurry to get to the game."

Can you imagine?! You're a fan of the team and you just side swiped the star receiver of said team who was on his way to the stadium to get ready to play?

You just get into an accident...you're freaking out because a) you know you just hit a car b) you see that the car is a super expensive vehicle and you are at fault and c) now you realize you are going to be late or even miss the game.

Then, as you get out to check in with the other driver - you realize it's the starting WR Steve Smith!

Lol...I can only imagine the look on that dude's face. Too funny.

Quote Steve: "I feel bad for his insurance,"

the announcers last night were awful!!! They had so many mistakes and they kept saying that Jake should have snapped the ball to catch miami with too many men on the field. but obviously they weren't watching the same game as I was because the ref was standing over the BALL!!! Then I get on to read the observer this morning and our dumb journalists who only cover the panthers and don't do anything else don't even know the correct SCORE OF THE GAME!!! when the panthers make changes in the off season so should the Observer!!! we need a clean slate!

Anonymous said...

There is no doubt this season is done. The Panthers are, and continue to be a mediocre team with a mediocre quarterback. Clearly this mediocre team cannot beat other mediocre teams, nor very good teams. From here on out things will get worse, and teams left on the schedule will be more difficult to beat. Can this team step up its play? Good question.

Bellichick gets questioned for a single play on a 4th and 2. Meanwhile, nobody in Charlotte has the cajones to call out Fox for his entire game's worth of bad decisions.

kyle said...

Hey everybody, unfortunately the Panthers got a good dose of grim reality last night. Ricky Williams is one of the best backs in the league and he proved it. Chad Henne put the ball where only his receivers could catch it, and they did catch it for a change. The Dolphins have depth. Even when the second and third string players rotated in, there was no drop off in performance. That is why Jake was constantly trying to quick snap the ball, to prevent Miami's substitutions from coming in. The only problem was the Panthers had substituted after those plays, which gave Miami the right to adjust before the snap as well. Offensively, it was obvious Miami found something in the second quarter and it carried them through. The Panthers did make some adjustments at halftime but that was not quite enough. I think Jake's eyes were bigger than his stomach, believing he could feast on Miami's secondary all night long, which did tend to take the Panthers away from their game plan. However, when you are behind, you have to throw... Instead of citing all of the Panthers mistakes, maybe consider on this night they were just beaten by a better team. By the way, I didn't realize there were so many Dolphins fans in Charlotte, the stadium was half aqua and orange last night!

Just because a draftee starts doesn't mean he was a good draft pick. If he starts and isn't that good, then it wasn't a good pick.

I'm actually not one who thinks our team drafts poorly, at least it hasn't drafted poorly in recent years (Stewart and Otah are looking good, Thomas Davis is a Beast, etc...). I just think they are not good at manging the cap. They don't have any money to pay a good QB if they wanted to. Their personnel decisions are just scketchy... Why keep a back up QB for three years if you don't think he can play NFL ball? Why put Josh Mcowen on season ending IR when he was exspected back in about 3-4 weeks? Why give a QB with a sub-par season and an atrocious showing in the playoffs $20,000,000? Were there really so many teams beating down his door that his market rate went that high? Really? I mean if Fox wanted to keep him, okay, but why give him that much cash? These questions along with the play-calling are why both Fox and hurney should be fired. For clarity, we used to say they ran too much because Delhomme and Smitty were always good for one or two awesome catches a game and we wanted to see more of the same and Deshaun Foster was our Running Back. Nobody has really called for jake to be Drew Brees since that game in Arizon last year, and nobody ever wants to see him try to be drew brees ever again

Anonymous said...

It seems to me that the Panthers had to do what they did last night... that is to see if Jake can still be effective. The run game is a winner, but we have to have a passing game to go with it. Therefore, Fox had to test Jake in a game (40+ passes), and now that he sees Jake can't hold his own, he'll provide additional support and coaching for him so that Jake can become effective again.

Sadly though, that's not the case and we just witnessed another episode of "Useless and Uselesser".

Steve said...

Is anyone else a little sick of Smith's grandstanding and chest puffing when he makes a catch? It's his JOB to catch the football, not a major achievement! It's what he gets paid to do.

Anonymous said...

Dolphins fan here. I wanted to thank all the Carolina fans for have great class. I would rather play you gusy twice a year than the Jets. Your guys running game is really scary. I agree if the play calling was better you would have had 300 yards rushing. I think the difference was 3rd downs. if you guys would have made a few more we would have been toast!!

Anonymous said...

Fox is a giant POS. He's a clueless buffoon that leaves his best player on the sidelines on most key plays.

He's garbage and barely a man.

MrBernz said...

Did you people ever think they threw the ball more because Williams has a bad knee? he sat out practice for it, maybe he ran & it started hurting more? Stewart also has that achillies thing happening. If Delhomme could complete a pass, those calls were great calls, no1 expects Delhomme to pass it with our rushing game, that makes it a good call if he could only complete it. The plays were only bad calls because of the qb. The Panthers get a new qb that can throw a ball & their coaches are fine.

When an ANONYMOUS poster doesn't understand what ANON stands for, what is that supposed to mean? I guess that's 'moron' for "I'm an idiot".

When same said moron has the nerve to try and try and call someone out for being "non-talking" (which for the sake of your simple mind we'll assume indicates a lack of grasp on the written English language because clearly nobody is actually talking on a text website), you ought to really be more careful about what you post. Confusing the use of 'your' and 'you're' is laughable most of the time anyway, but to do it in a post where you seem so upset about "Talking about I don't know how to talk" only exacerbates the demonstration of your own stupidity. Notice the correct use of YOUR right there?

When it comes down to it, YOU'RE just mad that a) you never have nor ever could get a girl as cute as Jennifer and b) know less about football than a girl which really scares YOUR feeble misogynistic mind.

Let me know if any of those words are too big for ya, ok there little guy?

As for my pic, my hair, my nails, fret not...my appearance, to which you have obviously taken a strong interest in, will in no way mask the ignorance in anything you have to say to, or about me.

So with that being said...I'm here because I am a "PROUD" kitty kat fan, and will post doing the happy dance or a big drawn in sigh...

What I wont do again is address, your stupidity and take up space on Mr. Scott's blogs to boost your ego, by taking up my time...

I have been not been one of the fair weather fans that call for John Fox to be replaced. UP unti after this last game. I mean there were was one play that did it for me. Everyone Except John Fox. 9 and 7 will not make the playoffs after then next loss its time to find out if Matt Moore is the future QB or not. Jake I love ya but this is not your season.

The thing that really makes it even worse for me as a fan is that Fox refuses to accept any responsibility or show any leadership. One of the first things you learn, hopefully, in sports is to be a man. If you screw up, admit it, accept the responsibility and state what you are going to do to keep it from happening again. Fox is like a Washington bureaucrat in the way that he deflects everything. Even if there is nothing he can do because our team simply does not have the talent level of other teams (which is far from the case - Fox's game-planning and ability to adjust mid-game sucks, but that's not my point here), at least be a man about. A leader has to accept responsibility, and show some emotion to motivate the troops, and get upset when he loses. Fox doesn't even appear to really care when we lose. This is who we, and Jerry Richardson, want leading our team? If I am leading this team right now, I am pissed and am yelling and throwing things and promising my stakeholders that I will make things better no matter what it takes. Maybe Fox doesn't believe the press and we as fans are stakeholders he has to answer to, but I can't believe his demeanor in the locker room is any different than in public. He just does not seem to mind losing.

MrBernz said...

Ok #1- People say, "The 3rd and 19 that Miami Ran for. I mean for goodness sakes DAN HENNING was calling the plays." Yall need to make up your minds, 1 week you say Fox was calling all the plays when he was a Panthers coach, now you say Henning calls them. How woud anyone know what play to expect from Henning if Fox was calling the plays all the time? Now #2- If Fox was running around ranting like a psycho, would that look impressive to you fans? If he were acting like he was about to explode, would that be an image you want your coach to have? What Fox has is called having a respectable demeanor. An image that youre not ashamed to show when others view you. I for 1 wouldnt want to see him kicking dirt, redfaced screaming at players , thats the appearance of a sore loser. Also, 1 of the articles i read quoted Fox as saying he would have preferred a run on that first drive, hinting to me that the offensive coach is calling the plays.

You know the one thing I don't understand is why you Carolina fans continue to support this sorry ass team every year. You guys gift Jerry Richardson your hard earned money for worthless tickets. Or you sit at home cursing, crying, bitching because your team plays like whimps. Yet you still wonder why no changes are made every year. Why do you guys continue to sit on your hands every year while Jerry screws you? Up here in Phili there would be riots in the streets if or team played as bad as Carolina. If you were real Carolina fans you would demand change. Those so called fans that continue to support this sorry team are screwing the real fans over every year. Until you guys wake up in Charlotte, Carolina will never win a Super Bowl.

Jennifer said...

Kenneth,

Thanks...Much Appreciated...Keep me in check though. We all have different opinions, so debate is good, but I cant argue over something I havent said <:-)..

Now Anonymous thats speaking of the Panther fans rioting in the streets? Are you serious??

I dont care if they lose every single game, why in the world would we go anout causing more damage, ignorance, destruction to win a Super Bowl..

Geez, is that the way people go about things, to get what they want, they destroy something?...

Or am I missing the definition of the word riot and what comes with those?

Wonder if we can tele-conference all the other teams, that are having losing seasons and just take out half the USA, because our football teams arent winning?

Bottom line is, we get the title of being Super Bowl Champs, and we get it by destroying our City....No thanks!!

Curtis Watkins said...

Oh, right, Philly fan @ 1;34...the reason we don't have a Super Bowl ring in Carolina is because we aren't more like the Philly fans...

Not to mention, you think it actually makes sense to say that we aren't "real Carolina fans" because we still support the team when they aren't playing well? How's that?

Youre welcome Anon @ 9pm...getting into the holiday spirit!

Now for my anonymous admirer...Was just wondering if you needed this country bumpkin to hand you a tissue...considering your steelers lost to a 2-7 team today...

Running off at the mouth always comes back to bite you in the a!!

From your own words...

Scott...just curious, but has there been any real thought around if the Tommy John surgery took something away from Delhomme? Maybe the right touch on the long ball? Maybe some arm strength to throw it long? Maybe both? I'm curious...if you compared some of the same play calls on the deeper routes to Smitty pre and post surgery, I wonder what the percentages would look like?

Something is surely missing...confidence perhaps. But, some of those throws Thursday didn't require confidence...they just required a good throw. And while I know Jake has never been the most accurate passer before, he still could hit on 2 out of 3 of those longer balls in the past. Now it seems he's nowhere near hitting them.

You know Jennifer you truly are stupid. If I was a real Stealers fan you think I'd be wasting my time here. Can't you see this is a prank? I enjoy you wasting your time responding to me. Please keep it coming. :)
