Oh, if only the 49ers would do this too...

That's great news today about the new football field for the Charlotte 49ers being named for sports and corporate icons Hugh McColl and Jerry Richardson. That the 49ers' field will be called McColl-Richardson Field sounds cool -- and very "Charlotte-y."

Both men have done so much for this community and I'm glad they have thrown their collective weight behind the 49ers' new venture (the school starts actually playing football in 2013).

Now I'm sure the press conference was very nice (I wasn't there), but here's something I also wish that McColl, Richardson and the 49ers could combine on a hilarious rap video like this one, which Bowling Green put together in a very similar situation to celebrate its new basketball arena called the Stroh Center that opens later this month.

The video is worth watching, I promise. But if you don't have time, let's just say that Bowling Green (which put all this together in an official but very entertaining sort of way) had a whole lot of fun and has garnered more than 100,000 hits on YouTube by doing the video.

The video disrespects no one, makes you laugh aloud at least a few times and has gotten a fairly obscure college like Bowling Green all sorts of good publicity. It has been featured on ESPN, in USA Today and a number of other places.

If the 49ers could do something similar at some point and it ended up going viral -- Richardson and McColl would have to play along of course -- it would be something else. Surely there is a rapper as talented as this guy -- he's a sophomore at Bowling Green -- on the Charlotte 49ers' campus somewhere.

This is all you have to add Scott? You have nothing worth while to say about McColl-Richardson Field other than to give a shout-out to another school far, far away? Guess we should be glad you didn't pimp an ACC or SEC school here?

Seriously???? Worst Op-Ed ever written in the Observer's History. What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?

In other news, I think this was a fantastic step toward getting the Charlotte community involved. Two HUGE names in Charlotte.

What a joke of an article.....

Flat out weird, Fowler.

Fowler was not at the presser because he was at the wine bar having too many mimosas with his "guy friends" and then he wrote "this" about a significant moment in Charlotte 49er sports history. Thanks Scott. Don't I hear a story calling you about what brand of toilet paper the tar holes are using this week ? GO NINERS!!!

That was a funny video - definitely creative. I'm happy to see Charlotte getting some different big names on board than already were. As much as I love to see Everett and Harris, among others, I'm happy to see Jerry and Hugh join in the fun. A big step for Charlotte football!

GO NINERS!

To have these two men involved is very positive (thank you, thank you, thank you)). Now if Humpy would take some of that NASCAR money and double the sitting to 30,000 ( we could name the stadium after him)and if MJ would add the lights, larger score board, and nicer field house (we could name the field house after him).

I might seriously get a video like that together. As an alumni, besides my FSLs and annual donations, I haven't done very much. I've got some friends in the recording busines including some rappers with some pretty big singles. I could get them to write some lyrics and get a big time beat producer to give us something. As much as I hate rap, the song could get some support from viewers on Youtube and the 49er student community.

in defense of Scott, hes' 100% right. UNCC has never done ANYTHING outside the box to get attn. The marketing mantra for the 49ers has been vanilla and boring for 25 years. Colorado St does some hilarious mens hoop vids with the coach...YOU WILL NEVER SEE CREATIVITY AT UNCC.

Thanks for the input Scott. Back to what ever it is you do on a daily basis (not sure what that is).

If Humpy Wheeler got involved, he would make the rap video. Great stuff Scott. Just watched the video and loved it and the creativity.

Mr. Richardson would have to wear his 49er football jersey over a suit. Does that guy ever dress down?
