Getting way out of hand: Eagles 31, Panthers 10 at the half

Wow, this game turned sour in a hurry for Carolina.

The Panthers defense is actually playing OK, and yet Philadelphia put up 31 straight points before a Carolina field goal finally stopped the bleeding. Jake Delhomme already has committed 3 turnovers and has been booed vociferously by the home crowd. He's picking up pretty much right where he left off from the Arizona game, and fans are angry about it. (Delhomme has now committed 9 turnovers in his last 6 quarters of play).

Most of the 31 points weren't the fault of the defense, although the most recent TD (which took Philly from 24 to 31 points) was. But it's striking how this game is a carbon copy of Arizona, where Carolina also scored first and then got trounced.

How'd the 31 straight points happen (28 of them in the second quarter for Philly)?

Carolina held Philadelphia to a field goal after Jake Delhomme threw a bad interception with Carolina leading, 7-0 (after that beautiful first drive, which looks like a mirage right now more than anything else).

Down 7-3, the Eagles put a beautiful blitz on Delhomme, and the ball squirted from his grasp after he was hit by an untouched blitzer. The Eagles picked it up, went 2 yards and boom, it was 10-7, Philly.

Then came another unsuccessful Panther drive, this one at least ending in a punt rather than another turnover. But wait -- that was just as bad. Philly's DeSean Jackson took the ensuing punt return 85 yards for a TD, and no one other than Jason Baker came within 5 yards of the speedy Jackson.

Then, down 17-7, Delhomme tried to force one into Steve Smith, who had been gesticulating about not getting the ball after a couple of routes. Instead, that got picked off, too, and run back inside the 10 by Eagles CB Sheldon Brown, who had already picked off No.17 once. Donovan McNabb immediately threw a TD pass to his TE Brent Celek and it was 24-7, Philadelphia.

Then Philly finally scored a TD the old-fashioned way, driving more than 70 yards on Carolina's defense. The TD came when McNabb threw a shovel pass to Brian Westbrook for the score.

This home crowd is sitting here stunned right now, oblivious to the beautiful weather and just about everything else as the Panthers try to get untracked. They've got lots of time to do it, but Philadelphia has taken over this game. It's halftime, the home team is down 21 points, and it will be interesting to see how many people even return to their seats to watch the second half.

Matt Moore better come out gunnin' at halftime

i doubt i'll be able to watch a single bears game this year without wondering what might have been

What the hell is Jake still doing in there. He looks just like the same Jake from the Cardinals game....

I told some friends at my gym earlier this week that I sold my tickets because I didn't want to see a half-@$$ effort, and that we'd get blown out 31-10. I had no idea that the half time score could possibly be that....glad I'm not there. I've grown increasingly tired of how the organization is run, and a complete flush-out needs to occur, management and over-priced players that don't perform.

Anonymous said...

Don't people get fired for this kind of performance?

Anonymous said...

Looking better this last drive...Might come back to win......Yeh....Right.....

How much more does take for Jerry Richardson to finally say enough is enough. That goes for John Fox as much as Joke "Go Home" or Delhomme same difference. People in Carolina are tired of spending there hard earn money to watch Jake keep taking millions from Carolina and not performing. Please bench this pathetic excuse for a Quarterback and let anybody have a shot at giving Carolina just a little hope and enjoyment on Sunday's before waking up for another day of work on Monday morning.

Anonymous said...

Richardson needs to sell the team to someone that wants a winning team. The panthers are terrible and I won't go to another game until we have a decent coach and QB. They need to move, they give charlotte a bad name. "Charlotte, home of the losers" Panthers and Bobcats.

Anonymous said...

Sad thing is, all that talk about the defense being the weak link was all fluff to take the pressure off of Jake...

Anonymous said...

Jake has got to go......LAST YEAR DAMMIT!!!!!!! John Fox needs to go for not snatching him out. Philly, can just tee off on the run, because they know if Panther's try to pass, they have a great chance at getting another turnover. Sorry Mr. Richardson, you will have empty stands if these two stay. Is Garcia still available? Shanahan still out there for a coach...Yo Jakehater i am with you except, with this QB 8-8 would be a great season for the Panthers. wb

Anonymous said...

Chris Gocong...how the hell is that! Delhomme make even this guy look like a superstar.

Anonymous said...

Cowher & Tebow

Anonymous said...

Everyone should stop buying tickets and just show up at the stadium on game days with signs. "No more buying tickets until there is a new coach and quarterback".

Anonymous said...

I've been a big Delhomme defender up until today, but I don't know what you can say at this point. It's time for a change, even if you don't think their other options are any better change for the sake of change might help at this point...

Wish I wasn't sitting at a cubicle right now, getting periodic updates on this lame game. Nice walk would be great right now, it could be worse though, could have paid to see Jake give the game away.

Anonymous said...

What is that awful smell coming from the statium?

Anonymous said...

The Panthers look like a bunch of clowns out there. It doesn't matter though because Jake will still take every snap this season and at the end of the year they will give him another contract extension. This franchise doesn't want to win, no wonder Peppers was trying so hard to get out of here....Pathetic

BigCat61 said...

This is worse than i thought it was going to be.Ouch.Sorry Jake...Time to go.

Anonymous said...

No wonder Pep wants out...

Daylight come and I wanna GO HOME DELHOMME!

Anonymous said...

They should fire Jake.

They WONT fire Jake because he's married to the owner's daughter. Or something like that.

Jake should go. Until he does, I no longer will be a fan. Hate to say it, but the only way to get something done about this cluster!

Anonymous said...

why not bring in Jeff Garcia? Can't we at least give him a look? We all know he's much more accurate than Jake is. Heck, I'm more accurate than Jake! We need try some new things out! This is just awful. The schedule only gets worst, we can't sit here and watch him throw games away all year long!

BigCat61 said...

We have a tough schedule this year.

Make a change now.Please

I have never posted a comment before about any sport-related topic. This will be my first. Plus, I have always given Jake Delhomme the benefit of the doubt. But they say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. I'm done watching the Panthers until Jake Delhomme is no longer the quarterback.

Anonymous said...

Panthers are playing very embarrassing without heart.Jake Should not start the 2nd haif

Mike said...

I would debate the comment that the Panther defense is playing well... They still are getting minimal pressure on McNabb, and Westbrook is pretty much running at will... However, the huge problem in this game is Delhomme. 2 interceptions and a fumble... Passes over the head of his receivers... He really should be replaced in the second half, but Fox would never do that... he will sink the ship to support HIS QB. The offensive line is not playing well at all either...Get ready for a long season...

Anonymous said...

Why is Peppers smiling while not doing anything? Because he has a $1 million check waiting for him at the end of the game. This will be the last Panthers' opening day game for Delfumble and Fox.

Anonymous said...

Should have gotten VICK.

Yeah, not happy about his past, but he's GOT TO BE BETTER THAN CRAP DELHOMMO.

Thanks for taking the money..

BigCat61 said...

Surely they will make a QB change for the 2nd half... right?

Anonymous said...

Love the Panthers and will support them even if 0-16. But it is way past time for Jake to go. He is killing us just like he did last year.

Anonymous said...

If Jake really cared about this team, he would resign.

Anonymous said...

What is it about Jake that makes Fox keep him on the team? somebody please help me understand!

I'm Glad We Have No FIRST ROUND PICK EITHER!!!

Anonymous said...

Hey did anybody check out the Fox half-time feed. The half-time team got a bigger laugh out of our Panthers than the Eagles did while they were on the sideline. It would have been funny if it were somebody else's team. Embarrassing. Okay, let's see if the stands fill back up with hopeful fans for the third quarter. Let's keep our heads up and hope we get a QB change or something good happens.wb

Anonymous said...

Could you imagine Vick with Stewart,Williams, and Goodson? No, I didn't like what he did..However, he would have been priced as a steal, and people have a short memory if things are going well..As for Delomo....Noone will forget his last few games...

Anonymous said...

Yeah we have a tough schedule this year as an earlier poster said. We have to play other teams in the NFL, not some pee wee team.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, trading away that first round pick doesn't look so smart now with
Jake still around.

Anonymous said...

Fox/Hurney/Jake have GOT to go! Everybody except the Kool-aid drinkers knew this was coming... We could be a lottery team...I'm not kiddin'...bring in Cowher NOW!

Anonymous said...

Jake needs to get out of town or become a backup. Trade Peppers for a QB or pick up Jeff Garcia

Anonymous said...

This game is making me sick! Delhomme NEDDS to be benched and GONE after this season-Fox is also OUT! It's time to get the "Get Fox Outta Here Movement" going again, I wasn't for him going last time, but I am 100% behind it this time, and delhomme too!

Anonymous said...

That's it. Get him out. NOW. This is absolutely pathetic.

Shaheen Saam Hafezi said...

ENOUGH!!! JAKE NEEDS TO GO!!!

Anonymous said...

Wow....Pull him now! There is no reason to keep him in there. This is getting sad...

OK DELHOMME AND FOX, YOU ARE NO LONGER WELCOME HERE. PLEASE GO AWAY AND TAKE JULIUS PEPPERS WITH YOU!

Anonymous said...

Put `moore in...This is nuts!
Jake...is broke ....

Anonymous said...

Once again i ask where is the protection for Jake? Where the hell is the offensive line? For all you Jake haters you need to look at the entire game and not just one person. And why is the defense letting the Beagles run all over us? How can you complete a pass when you have 5 guys in your face? You Jake haters make me want to puke. If I was Jake I would hate everyone of you but he is too nice of a guy. You should be ashamed and so should you Scott Fowler

Anonymous said...

And now, the Eagles may not have Mcnabb, but they get Vick after one more game...Nice Panthers, no future planning, no NOW playing...My goodness we sux

Anonymous said...

You want to fire Jake? FIRE THE ENTIRE TEAM ALONG WITH FOX AND HURNEY- MAYBE THEN WE COULD HAVE A TEAM THAT PROTECTS THEIR QB. GO TO HELL.

So...Disappointing! get rid of jake! Make him a water boy!

However Im sure before this game is over it will once again be JP's fault...

Ok does Jake the fake have a clause in his contract that allows him to never get pulled from a F'n game!? WTF! Seriously fox needs to get off jakes scrotum and put in moore or josh! I'd rather watch them lose the game at least it would be something different to watch! Jake go ride a f'n horse in laffette....... a$$ hole

Anonymous said...

jake sucks and should have never been given an extension. this is a joke. it's not the freaking Ds fault that jake turns it over 4 times and all turn into touchdowns. i hope jake figures out that he just needs to retire because idiotic fox will not fire him. as i'm typing there's another int. what a loser

I AM SO HAPPY WE SIGNED DELHOMME TO THAT EXTENSION!!!!

4 ints in 3 periods. Just outstaning work....

Anonymous said...

Jake WAS married to his high school sweetheart.....WAS not IS, read it again!

He is dating the owners daughter.

Lol at the Jake supporters...A QB in this league is supposed to DEAL with the pressure, not cough it up.

That last pick as ALL Jake, that ball was way underthrown...

Anonymous said...

It just got worse...here comes McCown.

Moores on the bench and Cantwell is on the practice squad.

Anonymous said...

No it is not ALL Jakes fault, but what did the o-line have to do with that last interception. So you can puke if you want to, a Jake can hate all he wants to. He does seem to be a nice guy but he has now proven, if he ever had it...IT is gone. He should just retire.

Anonymous said...

Lets go McCown! We know your better than poor Jake...

Anonymous said...

Jake's the third best QB in Charlotte, behind Anthony Carrothers and Christian LeMay....and that still may be ranking him too high!

Anonymous said...

It's as much of an Offensive Line meltdown as it is Delhomme's problem. Way to go Panther's fans booing your QB at 9:49 of the second qtr of the first game of the year. Give them some motivation to build upon. Stay classy Cat fans!!!

Big E said...

I'm not usually one to pile on, or jump on the bandwagon, but if this isn't an indication that it's time to sit Jake down, then I don't know what it will take. On top of that, this team looks totally unprepared for Philly's defense. That's on Fox/Hurney for not preparing the team properly, and not getting the right personnel to support the playmakers (Smith, Williams, and Beason) on this team.

Mike said...

Well with the O-Line playing as bad as they are, and the lousy play calling from Davidson, putting McCown in won't help much...

NC Tarheel said...

The reason Julius Peppers is running around smiling today is because he knows he's getting his hefty pay day at the end of the game of 1 million.

highbeam said...

Mr. Richardson that sucking sound you are hearing is Jake Deldumb sucking the life out of this team. Last playoff game 5 int. 1 fumble. Then he gets a contract extension worth millions. Next game 4 int. 1 fumble. Great decision. Cut him, fire fox, fire Hurney and make that call to Cowher.

Anonymous said...

Lol at "It's the Oline fault"

If you clock Delhomme, he holds the ball way past 3 secs...

The playcalling if WAY off, Jake is holding on to the ball and is not accurate at all (even when he has Smith 1 on 1 with his man beat, he underthrows him)

Anonymous said...

Where's all the Fox hoppers at

Fox sucks 1st of all. Not only do he not trust Jake, but he's keeping him in the game. For what? Oh because we didn't activate Moore. What an idiot. Beason gets a pick. What do we do... go conservative when we need 3 TD's. Our line isnt used to pass blocking cause we rarely pass. Fire him

Hurney is a idiot. Extended Jake. Pep situation. Not to mention we stay drafting people and putting them in different positions. Fire him

Jake... lost for words. Should no longer be the starter

Idc when we fire them. Long as its before next season start. If we dont, I cant rock with this team till we do

NC Tarheel said...

Jerry Richardson is going to have to have his second heart transplant if he continues to let Fox, Hurney, and Delhomme destroy his Carolina empire. Blood is thicker than water, you canned your two son's now don't stop there let your fans here those magic word that Fox, Hurney and Delhomme "resigned".

Anonymous said...

Oh before a homer try to defend some idiots

That comment is late. I had to do something and never posted it. Point still stands

Mike said...

You know, tefolks who think they are better fans because they never say anything negative about the Panthers are way off base... a fan is not somebody who just Rah Rahs the team all the time, they call those people, cheerleaders... a fan is someone that can criticize their team because they don't like what they see, but still cheers for them to do well. We heard all preseason, don't worry, be happy its only the preseason.. Now we hear, don't worry be happy its only the first game... When do you stop and call it as you see it??

Anonymous said...

Now McClown is out...

Anonymous said...

Bye bye Fox and Delhomme ,hello Chin .lol

Anonymous said...

Peppers, 1 force fumble, a few tackles and a blocked punt, and we decided to give JAKE an extension.

Anonymous said...

I meant FG

Anonymous said...

As I said at the beginning of preseason, the PANTHERS will never win a Superbowl with Jake at QB. It now appears they won't make the playoffs.

Anonymous said...

Oksy, on the positive side (if you want your linebackers making all of the tackles), Thomas Davis has 14 tackles so far today.

Anonymous said...

hope yo gosod we don't get Cowher. He stinks.

Anonymous said...

I cannot believe there are still people defending Jake. Get your heads out of your A___es!!!! I have never thought Jake was the QB you lovers blindly believed him to be. Everytime he screws up, it was the defense, or no blocking, or no one to help poor Jake. NO, Jake sucks!!! He has a potent offense that he does not have the ability to lead. He has NEVER been accurate. Smith and Moose have had to bail him out time and time again with athletic catches because he doesn't mind thoughtlessly tossing the ball up for grabs. Still, alot of you lovers still hold on to this guy. Quit living in '03, move on, get another QB, and let Jake go. I hope the Panthers bench him the rest of the season, run a Wildcat offense with Williams, Stewart, and Smith, and Goodson. My oh my, if the Panthers would have made a run for Vick, just think of the Wildcat offense in Carolina and NO JAKE!!!!!!

Big E said...

First of all, I love all you cowards bashing people anonymously on a message board. Post your name, and be accountable. Second of all, learn to spell and construct a sentence. You lose any credibility you have left after posting your anonymous comment, and only serve to make a joke of yourself.

I think the blame for this game belongs solely with Fox and Hurney. They failed to make the necessary adjustments to this roster to give them a chance to be better than last year. Fox and this coaching staff had 6 months to prepare this team for this game, and failed miserably. The offense looked like a deer in headlights in the face of Philly's blitz. Fox seems to stubbornly stick to an idea that he's going to do what he does and try to make the other team adjust to him. I see no innovation or creativity in the design of the plays or in the play calling. Some of the blame clearly falls on Jake, because he's the one that throws (or doesn't throw, as the case may be)the ball, but when he's running for his life from defenders hitting him from all angles, that's on Fox.

Anonymous said...

Eric,

It makes no difference who leaves their name or doesn't. The FACT is Jake sucks, and needs to go. Fox and Hurney can leave as well.

Anonymous said...

The Panthers are a joke. I only watch the Panthers now to see how bad they get beat. I laugh my ass off everytime I see Jake and the kitties try to win a game. Last night on MNF the Cowboys gave the game to the Panthers on a plater. Guess what happens Jake throws a INT. LOL same Panthers and they suck.Things will never change because the buddy system is in place. Richardson likes John Fox and they both will never get rid of Delhomme. This is the reason Richardson's sons resigned from the team. Richardson thinks its still the 03-04 season and the Panthers still have a shot at the Super Bowl. Wake up Jerry this is 2009 and your team still sucks! I quit being a Panthers fan long ago when I realized the Panthers will always suck. Who can forget the dismal Dan Henning era offense? The Carolina Panthers are a disgrace to the state of North Carolina. I believe that if Richardson doesn't rebuild this team they will lose their franchise. It happened to the Hornets and it most certainly will happen to the Panthers. All you Panthers fans out there need to find a real team to root for. Please leave the state of NC Panthers. Your team stinks Richardson.

Anonymous said...

Oh yeah by the way Eric people are being anonymous because they don't have a google account. Anyway your Panthers still suck. Please get off the John Fox crack pipe your smoking. All you Panthers fans amuse me with your burning hope. Wake up Panthers fans this isn't 2003 anymore. You guys had a great run that year, and even fought the Pats pretty well. Times have changed however and the Panthers suck now. If you guys were real Panthers fans you would be raising hell in Charlotte for a better team. They don't want to make a better team then quit buying their tickets. When Jerry cant sell game tickets anymore he will be forced to change. Richardson + Fox + Delhomme = FAIL. Simple as that.
