Dallas wins 21-7 over Panthers

Turn out the lights, the party's over.

Former Dallas Cowboy Dandy Don Meredith used to sing that when a "Monday Night Football" game got out of reach. And it reached that point Monday night late in the fourth quarter, when the Panthers went down.

Again.

The Panthers (0-3) still haven't won a game in calendar year 2009.

Down 13-7 deep in the fourth quarter but still in the game, Delhomme threw an interception that was returned 27 yards for a TD by Terence Newman. After a Dallas two-point conversion, that was that.

Blame this loss mostly on Carolina's offense. They were awful in the second half, not getting their first first down until 5:45 remained in the fourth quarter. Delhomme tried to go deep on the next play to Steve Smith, but Smith was double-covered and the pass fell incomplete.

On the following play, Delhomme threw a short 5-6 yard pass in Smith's direction. But Smith was outside, Newman was inside, and the ball was inside, too. Smith later took full blame for that pickoff, saying he should have crossed in front of Newman on the called slant route.

Instead, Newman ran the ball into the end zone as the stadium exploded in celebration.

Carolina lost the ball one last time with a minute to go when Delhomme was sacked and fumbled, adding one last insult to the Panthers' injury. The Panthers, who led 7-0 at halftime, crumbled in the second half.

Final score: Dallas 21, Carolina 7.

Scott...learn some football! Smith quit on the route! Damn you should be writing for the entertainment section.

I've turned off the TV. No fan deserves this torture. Goodell should penalize us a loss during the bye week for pretending to be a team. Someone needs to kill Joke and both pretend coordinators, fire Fox, and hire a real coach, some real football coordinators, and an actual QB. The Peppers saga, the Jake bonus, and the other signings were busts. I won't watch any more games this year. It's like praying to the porcelin god!

Umm I don't know what game you are watching Scott...but that was "Bad Steve". But I guess your job has become to throw fuel on the fire....

Steve Smith is not the great Steve Smith so many of you make him out to be!

Anonymous said...

Come on Scott. What can a quarterback do when the receiver changes the route and the ball is in the air? Credit that one to Smitty.

Anonymous said...

Bad Jake? You mean steve smith quitting his route completely...Once again, only blaming jake.

Exactly Poster #1...they are just trying to get everyone even more pissed. We need someone to nitpick his sorry writing.

Season is over. Bench Jake and try to trade Peppers. Good work by the defense but the offense is absolutely terrible.

"Umm I don't know what game you are watching Scott...but that was "Bad Steve". But I guess your job has become to throw fuel on the fire...."

Agreed. Seems most like a coaching problem right now... WR's aren't being coached well for sure. Team isn't cohesive. This team can play with a lot of heart, but sadly we aren't seeing it right now.

Anonymous said...

21 unanswered points after the half. Bad coaching.

Anonymous said...

They should hold open tryouts before the Washington game. That game may very well be unwatchable.

Anonymous said...

That was on Smith not Delhomme and the first pick was on Moose. These guys are quitting on Fox. Also, our O-Coordinator shouldn't be allowed to call a college game much less a pro game. That guy sucks.

Time to clean house

Anonymous said...

The halftime adjustment was "7 should be enough, let's play field position and stop blitzing."

Great call, Fox.

Anonymous said...

Why do you homers keep defending jake? He is not the answer!!! He has never been and will never be. Yes, he made it to a Superbowl, but Steven Davis carried that offence.

Trade Peppers and let's get ready for next year. Crap, get what is left of his $17 million salary and give a refund back to the season ticket holders. What a waste of the year.

Jake under threw that ball that was picked off to moose. Jerry Richardson needs to clean house, Jake, gone, Fox, gone, Peppers, gone!,

It's time for mr Richardson and his new croney to pull the trigge and show Fox & Delohomme the door!

Matt Privett said...

Does Delhomme need to go? Yes. Does Fox need to go? Yes.

But Fowler, just report. Smith obviously quit on that route, just like Muhammad obviously made no effort for the ball or to break up the play earlier.

Worst Punt Return defense in the league, no KO return, so we put Moore in to stay in the end zone for a touchback.

Peppers should be benched, no heart

Smith quit on that route - Jake still made alot of bad decisions. But what makes the most upset is Peppers. He doesn't even try. 1 tackle and that was because they ran into him. He was on the sideline for what - tired??? God bless Beason! He is a true leader.

The Super Bowl wundow of 2003 - 2008 is closed, restructure the team!!!

dcon57 said...

Sadly it is not all Jake's fault:

Game planning is pathetic..........
Receivers are giving up on routes......
I've seen Pee Wee teams that do a better job of tackling.........
The next three games are critical....All 3 must be won......I've got 16 million reasons to make defensive changes ( you listening # 90. that contract has destroyed depth and will ultimately cost a GM and a coaching staff their jobs....)
I will support this team through thick and thin but you will not see me drop my hard earned money on this group until some changes are made.that stench in the air is coming from Bank of America Stadium............

Anonymous said...

This isn't Jake's fault. I've never seen such poor receiver play. He has no one to throw to and when he does throw it to an open receiver, they either drop it or they don't even try. Easy to blame it on Jake but he clearly needs better receivers.

Anonymous said...

Scott...PLEASE ANSWER....are you trying to be funny or do you really put the Smith interception on Jake? Seriously? Gruden blamed it on Smith...who knows more about football..you or Gruden?

This one was on the receivers, and the coaches for changing the defensive calls in the second half. What happened to the pressure that worked so well in the 1st half!!?

Anonymous said...

It really sucks to be a devoted fan and realize that your team has zero hope this season. I'm also really worried that we've traded away the near future in the last few drafts. Thanks for your service and the memories Fox & Delhomme (oh and Hurney) but it's time to go in a new direction.

Anonymous said...

What we need is a player personnel guy with a proven track record who can bring in talent. Fox is a moron who calls the same game every week

Unknown said...

The receivers have quit on Jake. Jake has lost this team. Peppers is the most over paid player in the NFL. This season is a joke. At least I live in Denver and the Broncos are 3-0. I guess I need to start pulling for the Donkeys.

Anonymous said...

Come on guys....they just "Picked a bad night, to have a bad night"

Anonymous said...

This is not Jake's fault. This is more a team loss. Steve did not do much for the game as well as Muhsin. Julius was completely off tonight. I would not put this one on Jake alone.

Anonymous said...

It is funny to hear everyone saying the receivers quit on their routes. Yeah you can say Moose should have came back to the ball, but he was blanketed, he couldnt get back. The corner was riding his inside hip and he had help over the top. The ball should have never been thrown. Now the one with steve, we do not know if it was an option route. Steve did not "quit" on the route, he was breaking it back outside because the cb jumped to the inside. The ball should not have been thrown once again...but that one could go either way. Jakes arm is done, his confidence is done.

Crohnkiller said...

I guess Steve Smith quit when he fumbled the ball and it was someone else's fault that the million dollar man Pepper's was REALLY quiet. Please Panther fans, you lost..AGAIN. Please don't blame anything but a team that shows nothing and very few show up to play, sorry John Beason you are one of the few. Jake Delhomme played a bad game. It wasn't just one pass. He has no arm strength anymore since the Tommy Johns surgery and he can't get it done..period. I am not a Panther fan and am just saying what I watch. I am an Eagles fan and if my team was playing like this, there would be massacres in Philly...ps..the running game that is "feared" was non existent and that blame lies on the head coach

Anonymous said...

I don't credit either pick this week to Jake. Moose should've been paying attention and didn't even make a play on the first INT. Smitty quit his route and that's what caused the second pick.

The fumble was all Jake.

I agree with all the comments about the lack of cohesiveness, and they came out FLAT in the second half. It's the coaching, more than anything else. I still maintain that Jake is a mediocre QB, but Fox is on borrowed time.

I can see the press conference with Fox now..."How do you think your team played?" I thought our defense played well in the first half, of course our offense could have played better. We'll get rested up during the bye week, hopefully get some players back and get back to in a couple of weeks. "And about the loss?" ...it is what it is.

Anonymous said...

In addition to Peppers I would trade Steve Smith next year. Get something for him while you can. He may have the most value. He has served this team well but time to rebuild. I would honestly trade him if I could get enough. It would have to be a great package but I would not say ANY player on this team is off limits.

This isn't all on Jake. Smitty quit on that route. Though, Fox's god awful conservative play calling killed the Panthers tonight. It's time for him to go. And take Peppers with you. Even the MNF announcers were basically calling him out... If anything, props to Meeks for the job he did with a make-shift defense tonight. They did their job. Beason is all heart. Bad Jake, Bad Fox, Bad peppers, Bad Hurney, Bad Muhammed, Bad Defense, Bad everything. The only thing thing that kept dallas from putting up 40+ was there own bad coaching. You don't even have to throw against the panthers, you could Run all day and score 40! We need a complete overhall. Too many good coaches are available

Mike said...

Forget bad Jake or bad Smith. We have some many injuries on our team, we're just plain inexperienced. We don't have motivation, we can't tackle, we can't run and we get stupid penalties. It's going to be a long season, but this L is not on Jake.

Anonymous said...

Way to fuel the 'Hate Jake' fire...you're an idiot.

1) This would have been a blowout if Dallas didn't throw a single pass, we couldn't stop the run.

2) It goes both ways...Moose and Smitty are great players, but tonight was their Philly/Arizona game. Anyone surprised Jake is forcing it to Smith after the Moose pick??? Please....

Anonymous said...

It's time for the Big Cat to break his silence and do something! Fox-Hurney has run it's course. When you cannot keep up with or out coach Wade Phillips, your head coach is no good. Jake is done. Peppers is garbage and now the TV folks are calling him out. $1 million per game and he's doing this? J Peppers is to football as V Carter is to basketball: UNC studs but pro BUSTS!

It's time to rebuild this team: new coach, new QB, new DE and possibly, a new go to WR. It may be time to let Smith go elsewhere b/c we all know that he won't stand for more garbage.

Hickorypantherfan said...

This game was lost in the first possession of the 2nd half. I can't figure out what they talked about in the locker room, but it couldn't possibly have been about offense. This team came out in the 2nd half without even pretending they wanted a first down. They seemed to accept what all the pundits said, and acted happy just to have scored. I'm a positive guy, but this was the most disappointing 2nd half I've ever witnessed. They can't win playing like that. There isn't a team they can beat. Where did their talent go?

Beaston said...

Beason and Thomas Davis played their guts out. Jake wasnt good today but christ, he got absolutely no help today. Its sad when you cant run or your receivers cant run routes, let alone, get open.

In case anyone is wondering, Julius received 1 million for 1 tackle today. So Jon Beason should get how much for 10 and a sack? 12 million today right?

Anonymous said...

Sad. Just... sad.

For a while now, I've been caught up in the Panther "Bad X" syndrome. Tonight I've snapped back to conscieness. There is no good/bad Jake... he's always been a strong No 2 QB; J-Pep is the best lineman on defense; and the Panthers have a lot of talent; but, not a great team. They'll beat teams with the same talent or less but not those who are better. True Panther fans will realize this and support them for their effort and should, justifiably so, keep the criticism on the ownership and coaches for the weaknesses in offensive/defensive/special teams schemes and organizational blunders.

HickoyFAN....The best post yet. They blew it starting the second half. They had taken the wind out of Dallas, taken the fans out of the game and then went 3 and out on the first series. I guess Rosario thougt he was going to the pro bowl after his first half.

Anonymous said...

Note: Meeks system worked in Indy with an efficient pass rush (see Dwight Freeny)...he probably thought he was getting the same with 'The Million Dollar Man', but Pep ain't Dwight Freeny.

But it ain't all Pep's fault we can't stop the run...or the pass. Looks like Thomas Davis and Beason are the only one's who give a s**t out there on D.

Anonymous said...

The defense played amazing near the goal line. Give credit where credit is due - yes, Dallas had some questionable calls, but Marshall took that ball away from Williams.

If Peppers had had a better day, the defense may have single handedly won it...

As it was, they gave the offense every goddamn chance to win, and they couldn't take advantage.

It's not fair to lay this all on Jake. In fact, i'm not sure either INT was his fault, nor the fumble. A famous coach often says that football games are won on the line. Frankly, Carolina's line lost the game - though the linebackers and defensive backs had a nice night.

I think that this team does need a wakeup though. Perhaps a switch in QBs for the week 4 outing is what it will take. Jake may not have lost this game, but he also hasn't won any of his last four.

Anonymous said...

Panthers' next game (vs. The Skins) should be called the Gruden Bowl. . .of course Daniel Snyder will throw more $ at him than Mr. Richardson will. Mr. R wasted way too much $ on Julius "Don't mind me, I'm just watching a football game" Peppers.

Anonymous said...

Jerry, if your listening, we have a bye week, go ahead and pull the trigger FIRE FOX and HURNEY, let the Offensive Coordinator run the show the rest of the year, Bring in a Player personnel guy with a Proven Track Record to rebuild this team, possibly Shanahan, Ship Peppers for whatever you can get.

Anonymous said...

Way to go Pep. Apparantly $1 million bucks gets you a 2 tackles, only one of which was solo.

Jermel said...

Okay, lets get this straight. Smith did not quit on the route. He recognized the fact that Neuman was sitting on the route so he faked inside and went outside. Now I don't know what kind of signals Jake and Steve have with each other but obviously they were not on the same page. The ball to Moose looked like a Hail Mary pass. I knew that was an INT before the receivers were even in the screen. Jake has clearly lost the ability to throw the deep ball. When he does throw deep it only seems to go about 40 yards. And why did they come out passing in the 2nd half?

Terry C said...

Scott,

To blame this game on "bad Jake" is asinine and really brings into question your credibility. What about "awful Julius"??? He was simply a non factor. Special teams continue to put us in bad field position....so bad, we don't even dare run a kickoff out of the endzone. Smith didn't get open and dropped balls. Moose dropped balls. Coaching was terrible. Blaming this on "Bad Jake" is just a stupid headline.

Another $1,043,750.00 performance by Peppers. His only tackle was worth $693,833.33 and his only assist was worth $347,916.67... And the receivers were at fault for both interceptions.

Anonymous said...

This is not all Jake's fault. Don't even try to put it on him. Steve didn't do his part, nor did Muhsin or Peppers. I support Jake and I am getting tired of having to defend his every action to people. It makes no sense.

Anonymous said...

Someone please let me know why we are paying Peppers so much? He is a waste of space. The only time he ever plays hard is if it is a contract year. He had one tackle this game...one. I could do better than that.

Jermel....I'll take Gruden's take on the play. He said Smith was at fault. But if you know more than a NFL coach...knock yourself out.

Anonymous said...

You know times are bad when you can't remember the last game we won anymore.

I agree with Jermel on the interception to Moose. That was a typical Jake deep pass - through the ball up and hope your receiver can go and get it. What a joke.

Anonymous said...

Thank God the NBA season is starting soon so maybe we can split our frustration onto two teams!

Anonymous said...

Aahhh. Thank you Panthers. Now that all my expectations about this season are completely gone I can at least enjoy watching the games without getting worked up.

Anonymous said...

Jermel, why didn't we run the ball the 2nd half??? Because we couldn't do it all game, they stuffed it (I'm sure we'll find a way to blame Jake for this).

And Jake's lost the deep ball? Funny, the deep ball works for Smith (someone who fights for it).

I like Jake, but at this point, I'd love to see a new QB come in and stink it up even worse (i.e. Carr, Weinke, Testaverde). Then who is everyone gonna blame? Fox??? Fire him too..then what? We still stink!

Anonymous said...

Smitty DID NOT blow his route. The Cowboys secondary read Jakes 'GaGa eyes' for Smitty as soon as the snap happened.

Anonymous said...

Well, more weak play. Can't tackle. If this was flag football we would be undefeated. Pass routes? Looks like we need a road map to get to the end zone! And as far as Pepper-WIMP goes,$1 mil for 1 tackle?? Buy some Girl Scouts. Maybe they can stop the other team more than him. But on the good side we get 2 weeks of great jokes from coach and new ways to lose!!

Anonymous said...

yeah, you can't really blame Jake and no, I'm not a "Jake homer". A lot of the blame goes to Steve which has been pointed out, Coaching & the O-line. This was arguebly the best running game in the league last year......

Detroit- South! What a way to lose. The Jets and Lions can win with true rookie QBs and we can't get first downs with our "elite" group. Peppers is overrated. The D-line is ineffective. And the secondary can't tackle. As for the offense, the Coordinator is whacked. His play calling is worse than Henning. POLL-How many weeks will it take for the Panthers to get in the win column?

Anonymous said...

Well Julius Peppers has what, three tackles, thats about 1 million a tackle. The run game, which is the Panthers strength, is non existent. Jake only has one good drive in him per game. The offensive line is getting weak. The defensive line is brittle. The secondary is, well do we even have a secondary. Receivers are mediocre at best. Our only shining point is the linebacking corp. Go Panthers! Just face it, we have the talent, but no passion to win.

Anonymous said...

Yes, Smitty can do no wrong because he makes Jake look good.

And when Smitty does bad??? It's Jake's fault because he's the one throwing it.

Replace Fox this week, replace Jeff Davidson, hell, let's put a want ad in the Oserver for coaches!

Unknown said...

The headline linking your article is incorrect. This was not the fault of "bad Jake." On both his interceptions the blame could go to his wide receivers. Definitely on the second one. Maybe you should watch the replay before making a blog post. What failed the Panthers was the offense but the running game was no existent thanks to the o-line and running backs. Jakes seemed like the only competent offensive player tonight. And I know to many that is a huge stretch.

Anonymous said...

Last INT is really irrelevant. We wasn't going to win. Thats how the season been so far. It was not a surprise. Team has problems and it starts from the management. Then coaching. Smith been dominating since 05, nobody decided to step up and draft a great receiver in the 1st round. Or go out and get some better receivers

The only reason this game was even slightly close is because Dallas kept knocking themselves in the foot with offensive line penalties. I cant remember how many 3rd down and 10+ yards the Cowboys had. When will management realize we can't win it all with this QB. We've mortgaged future draft picks to win now and well...it hasnt worked out. Time for some new blood. Goodbye Fox, Hurney, Delhomme, and Peppers. Its unfortunate we traded next years number one for a DE that doesnt even start? We could have used it to draft a QB!

Come on guys, just because the offense isn't sure about the blocking schemes (or apparently the passing routes), we have a defensive staff which pulls the plug on whatever works, any pass route over twenty yards causes our franchise quarterback's elbow to smoke and throw sparks, and our seventeen MILLION dollar savior can't beat the solo block of a tight-end, it's still to early to PANIC (just like ALL the SPORTS GURU's at the Obsever said during the pre-season). We have tons more "key injuries" and "bad days to have a bad day" left in this season. Is it too late to trade JP for a seventh rounder and a six-pack?

I put the blame where it belongs. Both interceptions were the fault of the wide receivers. Smith quit on the route and Muhammed didnt even go for the ball. Did he even know it was thrown. As far as the defense is Peppers not the most overpaid player in the NFL. What a joke.

I suppose none of the INT's Jake threw against the Cardinals in the playoffs last year wasn't Jakes fault either??? Or the ones he threw in the first game this year??
Jake needs to get benched! The Panthers won't win a game until they have a different QB! Jake stunk again tonight.

Should have given Peppers to the Jets for the 1st round pick...Guess who would be backing up Jake??

I agree with the guy that just posted about the chick comments above bashing all the negative posts, these guys get paid asinine sums of money to perform on the field, both players and coaches. and if they dont, we as fans have the right to criticize analyze let em know how we feel about the terrible product thats being displayed.

The Panthers have too much talent to be the worst team in the league..we wont win the SuperBowl this year but we'll get some wins...on the other hand we have the market cornered on the most fair-weather, worst fans in the league hands down...Charlotte doesnt deserve a team move it to a city that doesnt quit on the team the minute things go south...

Every team goes thru down stretches...the Cowboys havent done anything of importance since 1996 yet their stupid ass fans always got something to say...the Panthers are a 15 year old team with several NFC championship games & a SuperBowl under their belt but the minute a season goes south to hear you idiots talk we are the worst thing ever!!!

Carolina fans #1 hypocrites/jerks in the NFL...atleast we'll be #1 in something this year....

trading Steve Smith for a first and third rounder in the draft next year may not be a bad option at this point....when Smith loses a step, he will be done, that quick first step is his trademark, once it is gone, he is done....

Well now ANON....I assume you must be one of the ones that sucks at your job as well...

And coming from such igornace, I will take the term idiot as a compliment..

Nails and hair are pefecto, you arent wanting to wear the cheerleading skirt to ...are you????

As for Pep....how many times do I have to say it ....he can make one tackle, no tackles or sit on the sidelines and smile all the way to the bank....He gave them all summer to let him go and THEY choose to keep him where he didnt want to stay .....so have at it Pep...

Next thing youll be telling me is he should have made those catches to Moose and Smitty...IDIOT ....oops...

Carolina 0-3, First time since 1998. I think Cowher's phone will be ringing this week

Did anyone else see Jarrett catch a pass tonight or was that just a dream? Yeah, that's what I thought. Jarrett is coming along nicely in his 3rd year. Perhaps they can increase the number of plays he can read to 4? I see a big contract extension in order ...

Nice tackle Pep. It was worth a million!

Jake is not to blame on the INT's. Tonight it is the receivers. Steve Smith just messed up. The other INT before, well 50/50 Jake’s fault. The panthers are too static in the offense; Steve Smith needs to make plays other than catch the ball. The offensive coach and FOX forgot they had a running game!!!!!!!!!! The 2nd half was played terrible. We do not have any surprise plays, as in the movie Talladega Nights, "Shake and Bake", the Panthers do not have. The panthers are not dynamic enough, just predictable. We need to rely on others receivers other than Steve Smith, and then the panthers can make a big play with him. De Angelo Williams looked disgusted that the running game didn’t happen. The coaches need to take the bye week and look at what they can do with players that have potential. They have the drive to make plays, since they do not get to play as much. ON the DEF, well tackling… well it is terrible. They need to put them in a chicken house and catch chickens. Chris Gamble needs to play 3x better. I will play harder if they pay me juat $200,000 for the season! The Cb’s are lazy!!! The DEF as a whole played super compared the 2 games previous. Peppers needs to stop riding time and play his guts out. Now to that, most of that is the DEF coach not moving things around with peppers. Also to fool the other team, i would line up Peppers as a TE, in some plays in the RED ZONE, to throw off the DEF. I'm done for now, any comments?

Jennifer,

Oh...OK....I see. Because Julius wanted out of here, and had ro settle for $16+million this year, he can choose to suck and play with no heart at all. You're right.....how could I have expected any more from him...boy am I stupid.

I guess we should all just post things like "Oh well, good try Panthers...we'll get 'em next time"....these are PROFESSIONAL football players making a hell of a lot of money to perform. We, as fans, pay their salary and have every right to give our opinions. Doesn't mean we are not fans of the team....but when there is lack of heart and poor performance week after week, "good try guys" just doesn't cut it. Now if you can't handle that, I suggest you not read these comments and save yourself some frustration. Then go watch some feel good puppy movie.

I'm not perfect at my job, but I do know that Scott's "article" is a blog post. I don't want to get into a semantic argument, but there is a huge difference.

I say we go after John Madden as our new Head Coach. If we cant afford him, maybe we could get Frank Caliendo to impersonate him.

BOOM!!!

The Panthers are a joke. I only watch the Panthers now to see how bad they get beat. I laugh my ass off everytime I see Jake and the kitties try to win a game. Last night on MNF the Cowboys gave the game to the Panthers on a plater. Guess what happens Jake throws a INT. LOL same Panthers and they suck.Things will never change because the buddy system is in place. Richardson likes John Fox and they both will never get rid of Delhomme. This is the reason Richardson's sons resigned from the team. Richardson thinks its still the 03-04 season and the Panthers still have a shot at the Super Bowl. Wake up Jerry this is 2009 and your team still sucks! I quit being a Panthers fan long ago when I realized the Panthers will always suck. Who can forget the dismal Dan Henning era offense? The Carolina Panthers are a disgrace to the state of North Carolina. I believe that if Richardson doesn't rebuild this team they will lose their franchise. It happened to the Hornets and it most certainly will happen to the Panthers. All you Panthers fans out there need to find a real team to root for. Please leave the state of NC Panthers. Your team stinks Richardson.

The Cowboys and Panthers both suck. This was the most unentertaining MNF game in recent memory.

GO Colts!

This article was well writte by Mr. Fowler. All those bastards over on the main page are just mad as living hell about the Panthers killing themselves last night. What a total embarrassment. Thank God I can tell people that I'm not from here and the Panthers are a laughing stock.

Some of you should go bury your heads in shame defending such mess as the Panthers showed in that game last night. Those clowns should just go back out to the Epitcenter and get good and loaded and get in more trouble with the law. They're better at that crap anyway!
