New Panther logo revealed

New Logo
New logos with various color combinations

(Guys: here's an excellent video from WCNC about the change to the new logo, which includes a shout-out to the "Scott Says" blog).

The Carolina Panthers have altered their logo for the first time in the franchise's 18-year history, making slight refinements to provide what the team called "a more aggressive, contemporary look."

"We have one of the finest and most recognizable logos in the NFL and wanted to make it as modern as possible without losing the dramatic essence of the mark," Panthers President Danny Morrison said.

Left unsaid is how much - if any - the uniforms will change for the 2012 season other than incorporating the new logo into the helmets and jerseys.

Nike has taken over from Reebok as the NFL's official uniform provider for 2012. In conjunction with that move, there have been rumors the Panthers' uniforms will be tweaked by the NFL.

A team spokesman declined comment Sunday night on whether the uniforms would change. But a source close to the team said the uniforms were not expected to be altered dramatically.

The Panthers had not planned to release their new logo Sunday night during the NFL's Pro Bowl game as they ultimately did. But their hand was forced by a picture posted on Facebook by Nike Football and some resulting questions from the Observer.

The Nike Football Facebook page showed 32 pictures of different versions of a new NFL glove produced by Nike, each with an NFL team logo. Instead of the logo the Panthers have used since they began play in 1995, the Nike Panthers gloves carried a logo close to - but not identical - to the new logo the Panthers were getting ready to unveil within the next few days or weeks. To avoid confusion, the Panthers sped up their internal timetable.

The NFL's creative department was responsible for tinkering with the Panthers' logo. The primary changes are in the eyes, whisker and mouth area. The presence of the Panthers' blue color also has become more striking in the logo.

The Panthers plan to transition to the new logo throughout 2012. They also have changed their primary logo typeface.

"It is a cleaner style that is easier to read and should be more applicable to different uses," Morrison said.

(If you want to see a picture of the gloves that started this whole thing, look at the post directly below this one in "Scott Says").

Real, uh, dramatic change, huh?

I thought they were just going to change it to a picture of cam newton.

Keith said...

I would love to get a larger/cleaner version of this image.

Anonymous said...

The jerseys are changing to, Nike is designing them. That's from an employee...

Anonymous said...

They paid someone money to come up with this?? Where do I sign up?

Anonymous said...

I work with wife of employee in executive offices. She told us last wee logo and jerseys were changing. I think its as much about selling new Panther jerseys and stuff. Very clever.

Anonymous said...

Terrible, it looks like lipstick!! And what is up with the lazy eye??!

Anonymous said...

Let's see the logo Observer gets more people to their site. Brilliant marketing idea by Pathers more cash. Let's spend it on defensive FA's.

Anonymous said...

Now for the next phase of the update, the Panthers need to redo the "No Fear" end zone paint scheme.

Anonymous said...

"Exclusive" in that Scott has confirmation that indeed the logo is changing, Mr Anonymous #1... That would be the 1st time that the rumor is confirmed, making it indeed an "exclusive"... Perhaps you should learn the definition of the word before you start berating someone else over its use..

I didn't feel the old logo was "dated" yet. Oh well.

>>Terrible, it looks like lipstick!! And what is up with the lazy eye??! >>

Are you talking about Fowler's photo or the logo?

Anonymous said...

this is an impressive update to our original logo. looks sleek and much more aggressive. perfect time to freshen up. i love the new look.

Anonymous said...

They need to move the blue "lash" off the left eye. It looks like a creepy lazy eye...

Anonymous said...

Anyone wanna petition for the old lettering? The new one does not look as good as the old one. I like the logo though.

mdhenshaw said...

I wouldn't mind sering us move to a black helmet or black pants.

Alex said...

I'm most excited about the logotype changing. I've hated that 90s-screaming font for years.

Anonymous said...

They do this for no other reason than to suck more dollars from fans that just have to get the latest thing. Screw it.

clayj said...

Epic fail.

I will continue to enjoy wearing my suddenly-retro jerseys and ball caps. No way will I be wearing anything with THIS logo on it.

Anonymous said...

Does this mean the new logo will be on the field this year?

Anonymous said...

It looks like a 5 year old got a hold of the current logo and threw 4 blue lines on it and now its the new logo. They need to upgrade the defense and leave the logo alone.

Anonymous said...

Scott, as Eugene McCarthy said, Being in politics is like being a football coach. You have to be smart enough to understand the game and dumb enough to think it’s important.

You are officially dumb enough to think it matters.

Anonymous said...

The lip is terrible looking. It really looks like a fat lip with blue lipstick!

Why is it's eyeball so far over on the left eye? What is it looking at??? Weird...

Anonymous said...

It looks like a 5 year old came up with that font.

Anonymous said...

Wonderful, the new logo has amblyopia AKA lazy eye

Anonymous said...

For the great season Cam Newton had, he has been an embarrassment in the pro bowl.

Anonymous said...

Yep. HATE IT. Now I really need to get a Cam jersey before they replace it with this crap.

Anonymous said...

The 80's called and they want their font back.

This is an embarrassment. There is plenty of talent right here in Charlotte that could have done this right.

Anonymous said...

Yep. HATE IT. Now I need to get a Cam jersey before they change it to this horrible attempt at being "modern and aggressive".

Anonymous said...

Cam Newton is making the Panther's look like a big bad joke. He is not even pro bowl caliber and is showing it. He lost the game for the NFC all by himself

Anonymous said...

Well, now we have a blue-gum panther logo to match our blue-gum QB

Anonymous said...

Yeah i gotta make it new and contemporary --- just like steelers, cowboys, packers, they sure dont need to

pathetic stab at selling more merchandise

Anonymous said...

I hope it's not long before they change was was a great logo. I won't be buying anything with this one because it looks bad.

Anonymous said...

this is about making more money off souviniers. Terrible looking logo.

Anonymous said...

There was nothing wrong with the panthers logo. I think they made a mistake.

Anonymous said...

I hope they keep the origional logo and this is a publicity stunt.

Anonymous said...

Has Green Bay every changed their logo? How can you have a tradition when you go and change the logo on the side of the helmets. Perhaps its all about boosting the sales of the new stuff since the old stuff probably is still sitting on the Christmas shelves at the mall.

thinlizzy said...

does BATMAN come to mind

Anonymous said...

looks a little like scott !!!

Anonymous said...

the blue color of the panthers is just a dated color....regardless of logo.

I think mc hammer had some 'chute pants that color of blue when I was in middle school. the choice of color from the start has made our jerseys, logos, etc a joke from day 1.

Anonymous said...

Someone complaing the old logo's text was "too 1990s".

But look at the new font. Does anyone else think it has the look of mid to late 1960s TV show logos?

Hmmm

Anonymous said...

Looks elementary... they should've at least left the teeth straight instead of putting that curve to it. Plus, I don't think there was anything wrong with the old logo...

Anonymous said...

"Terrible, it looks like lipstick!! And what is up with the lazy eye??!"

Thanks, that's all I'm going to be able to see when I look at the new logo. I already didn't like it, but now it is completely ruined forever for me.

Anonymous said...

Too bad they can't update their performance on the field. But, I guess the lemmings that follow this Pop Warner team will rush right out with this weeks rent money to buy the latest Pussycats logo merchandise.

Anonymous said...

Logo isn't horrible just another modern update the wordmark could have been better . I will before more interested to see what to uniforms end up then make my judgement.
Btw the Jaguars tongue is teal and it's epically awesome !

Anonymous said...

Bunch of whining complainers. I don't like the blue lipstick but generally the new logo is a nice alteration of the original logo. It may not have been a necessity but it this isn't bad. (Well, the new font is uninspired, but I'm only talking about the logo for now.)

You're all complaining that traditional teams don't change their logos? The NFL just did the same thing two years ago, updating their dated logo without being too drastic. And yes even long established teams have made far more drastic changes to their logos.

P.S. What lazy eye are you all talking about. That blue is the shadow under the brow. (idiots) This logo is looking more to the side than the old flat straight ahead face was.

Anonymous said...

There are so many things wrong with this logo its not even funny. The mere fact that it has no white lines around it makes it impossible for the logo to stand out when put on a uniform, helmet, field or anywhere else. The overall design is weak and will look dated by the end of the season. The eyes are poorly drawn, the logotype is bland - everything about this screams unprofessional organization. Nice one JR. Now compared to every other team in the league, we have the weakest most borring logo.

Anonymous said...

this looks sloppy and unfinished. like a child did it. So much for my PSLs. The team clearly does not respect the fans.we wanted new uniforms not a horrible new logo.

Anonymous said...

Wow...who knows how they are going to incorporate the new logo...another incident being blown out of whack lol...for all you know they could have something else planned. Yes we see the logo but the rest of the uniform we don't, so we have no idea how things may turn out...it doesn't look bad on a black helmet considering if you look at the design the black will blend and you still see the blue outline of the design...just let it be until all is figured out lol

Panther-fan said...

This wouldn't be the same design team that reinvented the Seahawks, would it? Although I don't see anything wrong with the new logo, please DON'T TOUCH the white uniforms!! I've had many non-Panther fans say that they are one of the best uni's in the NFL and I agree. Too much black equals boring! Keep the silver and white. Look at past Panther photos and imagine the same shot with a player in all black...yuck!

Mark M. said...

Love it - think this is exactly what the Panthers are about, this is the classy brand that I know! Love the new logotype too, makes sense, not like the Cat Scratch Fever type that we used to have. Go Panthers! This is great.

Anonymous said...

Subtle tweak, nothing to get too excited over, but does tighten things up and feel like it has some depth and dimension.

Laurel said...

LOVE IT

Anonymous said...

Cool! Def think this is legit - too bad Nike stole the thunder. Panthers should have been able to release on their own terms.

Adam said...

Loving the new look, hopefully the uniforms get a nice style update as well.

Brad said...

I see mention of the Green Bay, Steelers, Cowboys logos, regarding not needing change. They don't. They are iconic in their design and signature. Much like the historically immediately identifiable marks for CBS, IBM, and more recently, DELL, Apple, etc.

This more contemporary approach to design (as seen in this logo rework) doesn't emphasize the importance of recognition and stability over flash and "what's hot" (or at least what's defined as "hot"....regardless of how temporary it is).

That being said, this logo "updating" does nothing for the brand. I believe it further muddies the icon and will look even more outdated than the previous version did, even more quickly. I think the type aspects are better than before (minus the very odd lines coming off the counters in the "A's," "R's," "P" and "H." Those are odd.....very odd. But the icon has not benefitted from the rework.....not necessarily worsened, just not better in any way shape or form. It doesn't look "finished." I fear it probably is, but it doesn't look like it is. Some of the elemental relationships and such look odd.

Anonymous said...

I think we had one of the better unis in the league in the black ones. This just looks terrible... No way im buying anything with this 'arena league' logo on it.

JR just cant seem to do anything right the past few years. Leave the logo alone!!! You wanna sell merchandise? WIN some &%#* football games!

Anonymous said...

I like this new logo. The slight small changes really do make the Panther look more intimidating and bad-ass. I like the new shade of blue too. I always that "turquoise" blue was sort of weak. Great job! Can't wait to see the new jersey's.

Anonymous said...

Bad choice. An animal only lays its ears down like that when it's scared.

I like the new logo, however, I hate the new lettering! Also, did they really change our "electric blue" to a Detroit Lions blue?

Anonymous said...

Logos don't win games. I think changing the defense might help somewhat!

mdhenshaw said...

Geez... Either there's one grumpy person posting anonymous over and over or people need to relax.

This is hardly much of a logo change. It's similar to the change the Falcons made a few years ago. Most people won't even notice who aren't panthers fans.

The old Panther font was hidious. I don't expect too many changes on the uniform either. The update logo looks a lot cleaner. The people complaining need to get a grip.

The change is so insignificant that if it hadn't been announced, doubt it would have been noticed. Need to bring in more black to the uniforms. Black pants? Move away from the all white, yikes. Like the silver helmets, no black helmets please.

"Has Green Bay every changed their logo? How can you have a tradition when you go and change the logo on the side of the helmets."....It's a freaking letter G. You want it in Cambria, Estrangelo Edessa or Calibri?

Anonymous said...

Love the new logo!!!The Green Bay fans need to move to Green Bay to be with their team. The criticism comes from the constant complainer, which is what he or she is. A lack of having something good to say about anything. I would hate to be married to him or her!!

Anonymous said...

Not really much of a change.

Anonymous said...

I don't "dislike" the new logo. I agree with a previous poster-- that it really does seem like change just for the sake of change.

Anonymous said...

It looks like they copied the University of Pittsburgh.

Anonymous said...

What's that lazy eye doing?

^_-

Anonymous said...

The old one was much better. This logo sucks

Anonymous said...

Calling this logo "New" is a total stretch. Other teams make these tweaks on a regular basis. New is like what Tampa, Denver & the Pats did. This is much adoo about nothing. Hopefully the uni's will actually change.

Anonymous said...

To gain more revenue, let's sell more shwag!
"How do we do that?"
I know, let's change the logo so all previous items are no obsolete and fans will have to buy new gear!

Anonymous said...

The round jaw instead of a square jaw makes the panther look over weight and feminine. The font looks like a bad 80's action movie Title.

Anonymous said...

I can't believe everyone is hating so bad. It isn't that different to the average person. People that don't follow the Panthers would barely notice a difference.

It kind of reminds me of the change the Lions made a couple of years ago.

I will get used to it and so will everyone else.

merc said...

They really need to change the left eye because it looks like the panther either has a lazy eye or someone punched him in it.

Anonymous said...

Unnecessary!

Anonymous said...

A lazy eyed panther!

Anonymous said...

That new logo is about as impressive as the Pro Bowl was last night. Unfortunately, us fans continue to pay through the nose for stupid things like changes in Logos and a "Powder-Puff" football game in which the "best???" players play in at the end of the year. How about taking all that money.....for Logo changes, the "tag" foofball game we saw last night, the cost to fly the players and families out to Hawaii and hotel & meal expenses and reduce ticket prices. How about doing something for the fans instead of taking from them all the time!

Anonymous said...

Please no black pants!!! The Ravens wear those sometimes and it looks like they are wearing WOMEN'S LEGGINGS!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Seriously? Seriously! Seriously @#$&?

Anonymous said...

Looks like the cat got punched in the bottom lip.

Anonymous said...

Really? Some people here, presumably Panthers fans, hate the new logo?

I'm a Pats fan (Suuuuper Bowl, BABYBEE), not Panthers, but IMHO the new logo is a definite improvement - a stronger 3D aspect, cleaner, better image. They'll probably update the font currently used for "Carolina Panthers" too.

Not a "new" logo, but definitely an improvement. I also doubt the uniforms will change much either. Not a big deal, people!

mdhenshaw said...

I currently live in Florida... I've shown the logo to a few people. The don't even really notice the difference.

The change is subtle.

Anonymous said...

here's hoping they bring back the Fight Song in it's entirety - after every score, fumble, sack and 12' high overthrown passes from Cam!!

Anonymous said...

that bottom lip looks like something perverted. reminds of of University of KY's wildcat having that dirty tongue on their old logo and having to change it.

Anonymous said...

I think they needed a more drastic change. There logo is awful looking. The new is better though. Enough with the ugly teal color too.

Anonymous said...

I wear lipstick and I have a lazy-eye...FEAR ME!

Anonymous said...

HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT!
Seriously does Mr Richardson pay any attention to his fans?

Anonymous said...

Updated logo needed to remove the silhouette of NC/SC in time for their move to California...

Anonymous said...

If the jaw were still square, this wouldn't be so bad, but it isn't, so it is.

Anonymous said...

I think the panthers misunderstood. New uniforms, yes. More traditional pant stripes please and maybe reconsider all the silver. Remove the collar around the jersey neck. New text, yes, but this new one makes me yawn.

New logo? Eh, not really needed.

Brad S. said...

It does give the logo a more modern look. Not that the old one was dated by any means, but I like the new one better, and I think it's going to translate into better looking team gear.

Anonymous said...

The random blue on the left eye seems random. It does make it look like an eyeball since the right eye doesn't have it.

Anonymous said...

Is it just me, or are these changes so minor as to be almost unrecognizable?

Anonymous said...

So we've trimmed the cat's whiskers a little and rounded his sharp edges. Even the jaw is softer. Is this a new, softer version of the Panthers? Nothing about this looks stronger or more ferocious. Even the new font looks sterile. Maybe the NFL is going to go with "flag" football too rather than tackle.

Kyle said...

Anonymous said...

I like it! needed an upgrade to a little tougher, not so cartoonish.

Anonymous said...

It is a little cleaner looking but it has the same problem as the old logo. Why show the panther's neck? It has always looked odd to show the mascot with its neck just cut off at the bottom like it's a Greek bust. I'd rather just see the badass head of the animal or its entire body. Maybe they don't want to look like the Jags.

Anonymous said...

Terrible. They need to send this logo back to the drawing board. The mouth is particularly atrocious.

Anonymous said...

Should re-make the team, not the logo

Scott Fowler said...

Guys: It's Scott Fowler. On the side-by-side pictures at the bottom of this blog post, note that the blue color did NOT change from old to new logo. In the "old logo" picture we had posted there for awhile, the blue seemed to look a little washed out, which likely led to some of the comments above wondering if the blue changed. The Panthers say it did not and have shipped me the one posted now to make sure people can tell that. Thanks for reading, Scott

Anonymous said...

What a sucky change!! Looks like the Panther just got pulled over for a DUI!

Why do teams always have to mess things up? Seriously??

WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY!!!???

Anonymous said...

Anyone who does not like this is just piling on, pack mentality. You look at the old one with complete outline with the blue, that makes it look boxy and Elementary.
This one actually looks like effort was put into it and not a 5th graders drawing.

Anonymous said...

I like the new logo - gives a more 3D look which will bode well for television. The best thing, to me, is the new font. Never was a big fan of the crazy script they had adopted...

Anonymous said...

The original was pretty lame, so it is marginally better BUT it still lags behind other teams' logos. Oh well, with the new uniforms the brass inside BoA Stadium will be laughing all the way to the bank.

Anonymous said...

Someone on the SportsLogos.net forum said he was involved in the talks about this logo and had the posts to prove it. the new logo is good, especially with a black helmet, but the new font. NO, please go back to the origanal Panther font. That made us unique. It is Carolina, not that 5th grade project that someones child did in arts and craft class.

^ That cat definitely isn't scared. My cat puts his ears back when he's pissed or defensive. And it's not like they just changed it to where the ears were back, they were like that in the old logo too. Same as the bottom jawline people are complaining about, it hasn't been altered except for being rounded. I think it's a sweet "new" logo, and I hope to see it on a black helmet. I'd like to see a pointed blue stripe down the middle similar to the one Denver has on theirs. all in all, although it may not have been entirely necessary, I like it.

Anonymous said...

I'm a die-hard Cats fan from the very start. I never really cared for the old logo much, it was just as bland as the crow on the Baltimore helmets. I think the new logo is great..... except for that swollen lip.... maybe they could "thin" it up a little or square it off a little more so it will looks like he actually roars instead of something like "RRRRRAAAAAWWWWWRRRRR,buh"

Anonymous said...

For all who are conplaining about it having a lazy eye... In case you aren't living ur life in a 3 dimensional visual world, that is the 3rd dimension(depth) that makes it appear to be a lazy eye. The old logo was outdated. Many teams have and will change they're logos. With nike becoming the nfl's uniform maker, it was a great time to change it. I can guarantee carolina will have new uniforms next year via the new logo and nike. Take it all in stride ya'll

Anonymous said...

I HATE the new font!
From a PSL owner, Panthers, PLEASE keep the old font!

Anonymous said...

I don't care about the fact that they CHANGED the logo, it's the fact that unless you are blind, this logo was terrible from the start. It was conceived in the 90s and still has a very 90's feel to it. The old one and the new one are both outdated! The fonts are both terrible too. It looks like a NASCAR, cheesy logo and font. Even Nike can't save this teams horrible jerseys. They don't need a NEW logo, they need a completely DIFFERENT logo.

Anonymous said...

An improvement, yes. But I would have gone with a whole new direction. This has always looked to similar to the Patriots logo. The Pats logo has a reason for resembling a flag (battle flag, revolutionary war). There is NO GOOD REASON for the Panthers logo to be in a curvy triangle shape. Ugh.

It's not all that bad I think. It'll obviously take some getting used to because the panthers have never had a logo change or a uniform change (at least not a drastic one). The new uniform came out today and overall I think it looks nice.

Btw, it's not a lazy eye or lipstick. Whoever said that just doesn't have the eye to see what they were getting that.

Anonymous said...

I seem to remember reading that the reason the original logo included the Panther's neck was because both the head and neck was suppose to resemble the shapes of North and South Carolina put together. Can someone confirm that? Overall, I like the changes in this new version, giving the face more depth than before. Not crazy about the new typeface, though. It may be easier to read, but the serif face, even with the modifications, just doesn't "pop" enough for me. Should've included some black to be more consistent with the logo.

I most live in another world, they changed the logo last year adding the Jay Leno Chin to the cat, and after the first season the team changed the font from a classic footbal font to the wwf font they have used up intil now. So no this is not the first logo change.
