Carolina Panthers by the numbers after Week 3

Here are some Panther numbers I find significant or weird after the conclusion of the third week of NFL play:

0 -- Number of kicks (both extra points and field goals combined) missed by former Panther kicker John Kasay and current Panther kicker Olindo Mare so far this season. They are a combined 11-for-11 on field goals and 15-for-15 on extra points. Kasay's 53-yarder for New Orleans is by far the longest field goal either man has made -- coach Ron Rivera three times this season has disdained allowing Mare to kick a field goal of around 50 yards and instead opted to punt.

1.7 -- Extra yardage Jonathan Stewart (5.3 per carry) gets you compared to DeAngelo Williams (3.6) over the past 10 games. I go into this more in depth in my column today, which advocates Stewart getting more touches.

3 -- NFL quarterbacks over 1,000 yards passing so far this season. They are Tom Brady (1327), Drew Brees (1059) and Cam Newton (1012).

3-16 -- Panthers' record over their last 19 real games after their win over Jacksonville Sunday.

7 -- Panther rank in total offense so far this season (based on yardage) after they ranked 32nd in 2010. They are only tied for 17th (with Chicago and Atlanta) in total points, however.

17 -- Panther rank in total defense (based on yardage) so far this season. Given the loss of two big-time starters in Jon Beason and Thomas Davis, that's not bad at all.

349 -- Steve Smith's total receiving yardage. He dropped from first to third in that category after last week's performance, behind New England's Wes Welker and Pittsburgh's Mike Wallace.

The entire delusional Newton media ordeal has perm ruined Williams who was the premier NFL RB. Stewart equally adversely affected who was in the top 5. Their psyche has been upset by unending overly aggressive control freak media hype never before seen in the history of sports putting them on the back burner. Bizzarro World.

C'mon man, these are professional athletes. Do you think the media love fest for Cam Newton has made our two running backs feel so bad about themselves that they dont want to perform better? give me a break. The reality is that running efficiency is down across the whole league, which has become pass first. Stewart and Dwill are great running backs, and I think they will succeed after they adapt to the new blocking scheme( we had been running the zone blocking scheme in years past) but the evaluation that they are two of the top 5 runners in the league is a little exaggerated.

Wake up idiot. Its a no brainer. DW was the 2nd coming of the great Cowboy Emmitt Smith. Now thats out. Hes disoriented as is Stewart ignored shunned disaffected and disinfranchised to give all the glory to a shyster.

Agree the Charlotte Observer has singlehandedly ruined the NFL Carolina Panthers but this has been going on for many yrs only its a million times worse in 2011.

Its the law of Newton, Issac that is, as in physics. For every action theres an equal and opposite reaction. Every gain is someones loss and vice versa. No exceptions.

Yeah. How does their red zone percentage rank against the other 31 teams? Not good, I imagine. Gotta fix that if we're gonna win on a consistent basis. And why won't Rivera let Mare kick a 50+ yarder. Thought we got rid of Kasey because Mare had the bigger leg, but it doesn't seem like Rivera trusts him outside of 40.

To all the simple folk who think that the Panthers will draft A. Luck no. 1 next year, please get a grip. The Panthers will not have the #1 pick so it's academic. Even if they did, they WILL NOT pick Luck. The team's need is much greater on the other side of the ball. Our defense ranks dead last in the NFL in yards per play....9.7 yards, which is hideous. The D is the main reason the Panthers will only win 3-4, maybe 5 games this year. It is what it is. And oh yeah, by the way, whoever thinks the Charlotte Obs has tainted the psyches of Stewart and Williams, also get a grip. Do you really think these guys read this newspaper?

We know why there are simpleton uneducated Andrew Luck haters who are the same that hated Delhomne and Clausen and Fox and even Richardson until he forked out 500 million to these beggar thieves including the billions extra in the union extortionism that only came in the worst of economic times in America and jacked up your cable bill 100% along with everything else.

We know why these haters love cherish and protect Scam Newton in spite of his many shenanigans so greatly but just cant put our finger on it.

Anonymous loser @ 11:46. This is football and you will not Tea Party Cam Newton like guys like you did to the President.

Get out of your parents house and stop blaming black Americans because you have a lousy job, no money and a terrible life.

By the way, your mom needs the computer back to check her EMAIL for free offers from AARP.

It's only a matter of time before the running game gets traction. Cam is a winner and will continue to throw above average for a rookie. Why would we expect anything less given what we know and what we've seen from the offense power? Things will only get better if the D gets more consistent.
