Bill Parcells added his name to the growing number of Cam Newton fans Tuesday night in an ESPN draft special, calling Newton the best of the QB bunch in this year's draft and saying he liked Newton "very much."
Parcells noted, however, that less than 10 percent of the more than 60 quarterbacks taken in the first round in the past 30 NFL drafts had become "blue chip" QBs (by his definition). And, he said, more than half had washed out after "totally nondescript" careers.
I wrote my column for Wednesday's newspaper and online about the pressure on rookie Carolina head coach Ron Rivera, who will forever be linked with whatever the Panthers do with the No.1 pick in Thursday's draft. (I want them to pick Newton, as I've already written).
Parcells said something apropos about that pressure on Rivera, GM Marty Hurney and others in the draft room Thursday when he noted about any team that picks a QB early:
"You're going to have to give the guy a chance, and you're going to have to live with the result. And if it's no good, probably someone else is going to get to live with the next result. It probably won't be you."
Note to readers: Watch for my on-location draft reports from New York starting Wednesday online and starting Thursday in the Charlotte Observer. I will be posting observations and news both on this blog and occasionally on Twitter (@Scott_Fowler), and of course we will have much more draft coverage from Charlotte (don't miss the Observer's annual "Top 100" Thursday).

Dont worry Rivera
You wont have to live with melon ead Cam
Enjoy Dareus or Peterson or Green
A.J. Green . . . A.J. Green . . . A.J. Green . . .
Who gives a s*** what Parcells thinks?!?! Or, for that matter, what you think Scott!!!!
Jimmy Clausen hopes its Cam --
He likes black guys and wants to show him the ropes at Scorpios
Why quote Parcells? The vast majority of draft gurus, former NFL quarterbacks, and nfl analysts think Cam will be a huge risk with the first pick. Very, very bad decision. Hurney falls in love with a guy and makes bad decisions. He could trade down and get a quality player in the first and a much needed second rounder. But never mind......he will not do the smart thing, but will risk his career on one player. Good bye Marty, only a very naive Richardson can save you this time.
Vet coaches are laughing behind rookie coach Riveras back knowing if he picks Newton the whole franchise will fail and be sold out.
Seven owners passed on Rivera who knows nothing about offense and played defense only.
A record 50 Touchdowns in the SEC last year. I do not care if he is a one year wonder. He stood up to the pressure of winning the National Championship. He is charasmatic, great smile, 6'5, very good arm, can run for first downs. If they can solidify their "O" line which was decimated with injuries last year and can pick up a free agent or two, this team can be very exciting to watch next year. Opposing Teams will have to respect his ability to run for the first down. Do or die, but I would gamble!
As a PSL holder I am NOT going to sit back and watch some rookie QB grow into the postion....if you want a quaterback pick someone with experience....this CAM thing is going to take years - YEARS to develope...this kid is not as smart as andrew luck....
Chris Leak won a NCAA title too didnt he at Florida staying a full 4 years and never getting into trouble with the law or kicked out or taking payoffs?
Leak high school and college record was a many times better than this Newton scam imposter who has worked the system lied stole tarnished the whole NFL and NCAA.
What happened to Leak? He was many times better than Newton ever dreamed of being. Why wasnt Leak interviewed in Carolina?
Please.
Do not put the name of C Leak and C Newton in the same sentence ever.
You cannot compare top grade high quality vs bottom rogue lowlife scum.
Leak had 15,595 yards at Independence high school with 185 TDs a nat record. He had 3 4A state titles and 59 consecutive victories.
Leak had 11,213 pass yards at Florida and 101 TDS and won a NCAA title.
Newton had 4000 pass yds at Westlake high school and 23 TDS. No state titles. No nat attention.
Newton had 1473 passing yards at the NCAA Div 1A level with 30 passing TDs. He had 21 rush TDs and 1011 rush yds.
So who was better?
Tim Tebow had 9810 pass yards at Nease HS in St Augustine FL with 118 TDs and 2 state titles. He had 3957 rush yds and 57 rush TDs.
Tebow at Florida won the Heisman and a NCAA title. He passed for 9286 yds and 88 TDs. He rushed for 2957 yds and 57 TDS for a total of 145 total all purpose touchdowns.
Fox wanted Tebow badly but Denver got him where he sat the bench last yr.
Peterson or Green HANDS DOWN! Both are needs on this team and should have an immediate impact.
CAM is not ready to be our QB this year and we're likely drafting #1 next year, certainly top 10.
Why waste a pick on a QB when we can get a franchise QB next year. My only hope is that the Panthers are saying they want Cam so that the Redskins will be pressured into trading picks. He'd be a better fit there than with us anyways.
take newton at one and trade for/pick up vince young... can use smith as trade bait for vy or get picks/help on the other side of the ball.. this sells tickets and provides a much needed personnel overhaul
A lot of our fans are the worse fans in the league and know absolutely nothing about football! I'm not a huge Cam Newton fan, but if you are picking number 1, there's not another player that you could pick there and pay that kind of money to. We have some really good fans, so my first statement goes to all of you fair weather fans that say you will not be a fan or come to games anymore if they draft Cam Newton. Get over it and support your team. No pick in any draft is ever guaranteed to be a winner! Most of you fair weather fans should just find another team.
The Tuna drafted Jake Long over Matt Ryan!..so screw him!
@ RONNIE ,I would'nt support my father if he picked Newton...NOT fair weather fan but SMART FANS who know he's a bust...the fo takes Newton i will burn my panthers gear!
Cam Newton is a winner he has won 3 national championships. although he didnt start in one of them and the other was a JUCO national championship its still a championship. Cam will take Carolina to new hights and energize the offense.I say take him and enjoy the ride.
Jake Long hasnt missed a start either. he is one of the best left tackles in the nfl idiot.
Newton was a bench warmer as a freshman at Florida behind Tebow who won the NCAA title.
The community college title was a total joke. Those are not even high school quality players.
Auburn was a one hit pay off wonder. Who had anything last year anyway? Nobody. Off year for D1A football.
His numbers suck. He was nothing in high school either.
This is the most overrated jackleg to ever work the system and go into the draft.
SCAM ALERT. PASS ON IT. Dont waste a #1 pick on a rogue with nothing to show.
Did you not read the article where myer said he was as talented as tebow that rookie year? Tebow was older. That's it. Sometimes I wonder if my fan base deserve a winner. Yall keep saying solid solid but solid don't win super bowls. Greats do. Unfortunately greatness comes by taking risk. The last time we took a risk on an overly emotional qb, we went to the super bowl. We been picking solid players the last decade. At least 5 or 6 pro bowlers and we still picking #1 tomorrow so y do yall wanna keep picking SOLID instead of taking a chance on greatness?
Anony 8:13 am is just another smelly kkk racist.
Indeed AJ Green is the best choice.
Everyone dislikes Carolina as well as would want to allow them to go ahead and take Newton rogue so they really don't experience your pet.
