Cam, Cecil Newton and Deion in the Big Apple

I have spent an interesting “Day before the Draft” in New York so far, talking with Cecil Newton and Deion Sanders about Cam Newton but not talking to Newton himself – who strangely turned an NFL “media availability” session into a “media unavailability” session. (My full column about the day is here).

Let me explain that a little. My alarm went off at 3:45 this morning so I could pack and catch a 6:15 a.m. flight from Charlotte to New York. My goal: go to an NFL event featuring about a dozen of the top draft prospects, who were going to play flag football and promote physical activity with a bunch of New York public-school youngsters before submitting to questions from the media.

All went well in terms of the travel, and I arrived before the event began at 9:45 a.m. at Chelsea Waterside Park in Manhattan. Then Newton got there and some other big-time draft prospects like Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller and LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson.

Newton, though, was the star. The kids followed him around like the Pied Piper. He delighted them by playing quarterback for both sides in their touch football game, making sure to spread the ball around to everyone. He threw the football some with his 12-year-old brother, who was participating in the clinic and has quite an arm, too.

While the clinic was going on, I spotted Cecil Newton in the crowd. Cam’s controversial father couldn’t have been nicer once he found out I was from Charlotte – he was curious about our city, as I was about his family – but steadfastly refused to discuss the ongoing NCAA probe involving himself and his son.
Fair enough. We talked for 10 minutes or so about Cam’s charismatic personality, his work ethic (“He can squeeze 10 hours of work into an eight-hour day,” Cecil Newton said) and his readiness for being the No.1 pick if that’s what happens Thursday (not surprisingly, Cecil said his son was very ready).

Then it came time for the “media availability” session. I’ve been to several of these before, and the NFL always makes whomever it invites to the draft available to reporters and broadcasters for about 20-30 minutes.

Every other draft prospect I saw stuck around and patiently answered questions – except Cam. He bolted toward an exit after signing a few autographs. I ran him down, told him I was from The Charlotte Observer and asked him to answer just a couple of questions. (The excellent broadcaster Mike Solarte from News 14, who is also here reporting on the draft, was right behind me with a cameraman in tow).

Cam said quickly, “I’m not doing any interviews.” Then he hopped in the backseat of a car that was revved up and ready to go.

Hmmm. It was very odd. I talked to one reporter who’s been going to these “Day Before the Draft” NFL media availabilities for about 15 years, and he said Newton is the only guy he remembers blowing off interviews.

(AFTERNOON UPDATE: I talked to an NFL source, who says that Cam Newton and his family did not accept any money or airline tickets from the NFL -- as a number of prospects have not this year, instead preferring to let the NFLPA pay for their trips in a show of solidarity. So Newton did not feel compelled to play by the NFL "rules" in terms of doing interviews Wednesday, the source said. On the other hand, he was apparently the only one of the top draft prospects who did not accept a nickel from the NFL who came out and played with the kids -- and you can bet those kids loved seeing him there and didn't care whether he did interviews or not).

Not that Newton needs to talk to me to prove anything – he’s already made his case for the Panthers. But it does make you wonder what he will be like in the NFL when he just threw three interceptions and it’s time to face the music. I still believe Carolina should pick him at No.1, but it was somewhat jarring.

In any case, then I found Deion Sanders, who has counseled Newton some during the past several months. Neon Deion said he believed Newton had been unfairly “ridiculed” and that the “hate” exhibited toward him had hurt him. He also said quarterbacks in general are “fragile dudes.”

But Deion also said he believed Newton would eventually win a Super Bowl as an NFL QB and that the Panthers will draft him at No.1, in part because Newton “puts butts in seats,” as Deion termed it.

I’ll have more from my interviews with Deion Sanders and Cecil Newton in Thursday’s newspaper and online, but wanted you to get a little flavor of it here.

Wow....that is odd. Definitely not what you want to read the day before the draft. Keep us updated from the Big Apple, Scott!

In fairness, I would run from Scott and Mike too! 2 Wild and Crazy Guys!

Ok. From Collins...to Peppers...to Smith... Do we really need another prima donna? Ugh! Though, not surprising from the guy who wants to be an icon.

Cam Newton, is getting smarter and smarter daily. I would keep quite too if I knew I was going to be the #1 Pick. Smart move.

Just because he is making reporters job harder don't paint him as a bad apple.

Anonymous said...

Cam has participated in a number of interviews throughout this entire process. He elects to pass on one interview and people are acting like it shows some sort of weakness. Get over yourselves. Maybe he was having a bad day or something. He is human just like the rest of us.

Mackey said...

LMAAAAO....Really Reporters???

Always trying to make it seem like someone is doing something wrong or has something to hide, just because someone doesn't want to speak to them....He's smart for this. The media is not on his side...and anything he says is gonna be used against him.
I'd make their job harder too....lol

Anonymous said...

The point here is he blew off the interview part of an NFL sponsored event...the day before the draft. It does make you wonder what would happen if he is having a bad day. All this stuff trickles down to being a good teammate and supporting the team. I've said from day one, don't pick him No. 1. He's an accident waiting to happen. Especially in what I'm sure will be a defense first Panthers team.

Mackey said...

Him not wanting to talk to reporters, shows how good of a "teammate" he's gonna be????....LLs. If that's what you want to put in your head..........

Anonymous said...

Deion ain't nothing butt the truth...LOL!!! He's know the NFL is about putting butts in the stand, not personalities

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't speak to you Scott. You all don't have any positive intentions for this kid. You are all looking to find ways to discredit him in any way possible. Forget you all. Plus who gives a ___ about a reporter from Charlotte?

Anonymous said...

War Eagle!
Give Cam a chance in Carolina!

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't read too much into this. The dude did the QB camp show with Gruden and based on how poorly that went, maybe his people have just told him to keep his mouth shut until the draft. better to say nothing than to say the wrong thing.

Anonymous said...

The Panthers need to stay as far away from Cam Newton (and his lunatic father) as possible. In the past the Panthers have been very careful not to draft players with questionable character. And now they need to stay away from this one too. On top of the character issues, he is probably the 15th or 20th best player in this year's draft. Let another team waste their 1st round pick on him. The Panthers can't afford to do it.

The worst thing that could have possibly happened to the Panthers happened when Andrew Luck went back to college. The 2nd worst thing that could happen to them is drafting Cam Newton. They should draft AJ Green and then see if Jimmy Clausen can actually handle the position next year. If he can't then draft one of the elite QBs coming out next year (Luck, Barkley, etc.).

Anonymous said...

Why is everyone clammoring for Green? We had Steve Smith last year and couldn't get him the ball, who's going to throw it to Green? Drafting him would be a good move only if you already have a franchise QB, which we do NOT. Join NEWTON NATION!

Anonymous said...

They already know J. Clausen cannot handle the job, why do you think they are about to use a #1 pick for a QB. Cam Newton, is wise for keeping quite. STAY QUITE until after the draft.

Unknown said...

He needs to get Obama's tele-prompter, so that all of his answers will be rehearsed and he can avoid saying what he really thinks. (revealing what or who he really is)

It worked in the national election...what a con job.

Kris said...

Real you guys are freaking out about this?

1) First Peter king gets him with "Icon/Legend" talk
2) Gruden embarrass him by asking to call a play when Gruden fully knows they run numbers from the side.

Now its just been anounced that Cecil Newton is being investigated by the FBI and you think the DAY before the draft he should be made avaiable to talk to reporters??

If I was him I would say the same thing "No Comment" do my fake smile and leave cause anything I miss say here today could really hurt me in the Draft tomorrow.

Anonymous said...

No one else is going to address this?

Maybe he had diarrhea?

He is a FRAUD.

This is the sign of things to come?

Anonymous said...

LOL that picture of Goodell with Newton. Reminds me of when Dubya used to puff out his chest in pictures.

Anonymous said...

Cam Newton WILL NOT be the number 1 draft pick. Just as he might put butts in the seats, when he busts, he will create vacant seats. After watching his performance with Gruden, I am convinced Newton does not understand the complexity of pro football, and for that matter college football. Plays have been dummied down for him.

JakeNC said...

Nothing makes a reporter madder than someone refusing to talk to them. I would say they are the ones with a sense of entitlement. Besides, what possible question could you ask him that already hasnt been asked in the last month? You want to play gotcha with a 22 year old football player like he is a a Senator or President.

you know, just maybe one of his high priced handler/agents who are staring at a big giant payday told him to not to do just any old interview this late in the game.

And it Newton can be a prima dona the likes of Steve Smith and Julius Peppers then that won't be bad company.

Newton has a huge ego. Can't wait to see a huge LB welcome him to the NFL.

Anonymous said...

Do you think it might be possible that Cam is sick of the media and didn't want to be asked for the 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000th time about his infractions at Florida, his evil dad's attempt at a money grab, and that he didn't play pro-style at Auburn? That's all anyone wants to talk about. No one wants to talk about the records he set at Auburn and the fact that he led his team through the toughest conference in the land to a national championship. They only want to talk about the bullcrap that doesn't matter. If I were him, I would have stopped talking to the media months ago.

And yet here we are again, reading the blog of a reporter who got his feelings hurt because Cam wouldn't talk to him, writing that Cam not talking to him makes Cam an evil person. Fowler and Solarte need to check themselves - they will never be as important as they think they are.

I still think the Panthers have the worst O-line ever assembled in the history of football on any level, and interior line help, on both sides, is the biggest need. Get some actual NFL blockers in front of Clausen, then we'll see if he can play or not. And if not, draft a QB next year. But if we do draft Newton, I will fully support him and hope he becomes a star.

But I'm not surprised if he's just sick of the same old junk and has stopped talking.

Anonymous said...

What an enormous ego!!! Should be run out of town!!!

No not Newton, Fowler. So he doesn't want to talk to you so what? I dont care what he has to say. He is not looking for a job talking. He is looking for a job playing football and he only needs to get JR on board for that.

Anonymous said...

I think he wasted a chance to show he's excited about the possibility of being in Charlotte. Unless of course he's not excited about it. Which I suppose is fine too.

Anonymous said...

Looks like Cam is backing away from his positon of "entertainer/icon". Draft Scam and you'll be known as the Raiders East, but without the hardware.

Anonymous said...

RISKY pick.....actually STUPID pick....Hey Jerry....wake up man...are you gonna let your team be ruined by this punk kid???

Anonymous said...

Hey look. If you cant stand the heat get out of the kitchen. Newton failed BIG.

Pro football is instant celebrity status. You are required to talk to the media otherwise they will destroy you as a loser.

He is not ready for the bigtime. You dont pick and choose who you want to talk too in the media at this stage of the game.

Mike said...

I don't think it has anything to do with him being a prim a dona, or stuck up... I think it has everything to do with him not wanting something he said being twisted or manipulated and used against him before the draft. If anything, I think its a signal he is not comfortable knowing the right things to say yet as a possible starting NFL QB...

If it smells like garbage it must be garbage. Leave Newton in the dumpster and take a REAL football palyer and not a wannabe icon.

About like UNC-CHeat's Big Marv:

“[Austin] has reputation in the NFL scouting community as a ‘finger-pointing, excuse-making con artist’ who does not know what it means to lead,” Nawrocki writes.

“[Austin] set a poor example and coasted way too much on his natural talent throughout college. Set back the UNC program by accepting improper gifts and was called “the ringleader” that led to investigations affecting the eligibility of 13 players.”

Anonymous said...

Get used to it buddy! This will be the first of many dissapointments from Cam.

Ven said...

at best, I get it - you're potentially the #1 pick who has already put your foot in your mouth..don't risk it, shut up, and move on....at wrost, this is EXACTLY why Carolina can't draft Cam..he's not ready, regardless of his talent/upside...I wish him the best, but know that Carolina doens't have the locker room, org, or fan base to make Cam successful (which translates to not making Carolina a winner)

Anonymous said...

It always amuses me how many Auburn drones continue to scream "War Eagle" and cry racism/bias/whatever else against anyone who dares to speak ill of Cam.

Never mind that the guy went to Florida (before getting booted out of there)...Auburn fans give 88 million times more of a s--- about him than he ever will about them.

He's going to be a miserable pro. No amount of Auburn polish or any money to Cecil (allegedly) could ever change that.

Uhhh Can knows he's NOT gonna be #1 and can't compose his self is what this means!

Anonymous said...

Crazy, you mean he was trying to leave and like the good reporter you chased him down paparazzi-style to ask a few questions. Cam, like any other football player who is on his way elsewhere, didn't answer any questions.

So you assume that he was leaving because he really truly wanted to do an interview with you on the side...nope, you knew what was up and you tried to squeeze in a few questions only to be disappointed.

Well, lucky you! Sometimes a non-story becomes a story! Now we can psycho analyze this 22 year old young man and use his refussal to do one interview as an indication that he is a future draft bust! If only it were so easy to determine future busts for all players...we could save money on scouting. Why watch game tape or give private workouts at all when we just have to look to the media for our information. Please people, hate him or love him, it is obvious that you are grasping for ANYTHING to prove your opinion as fact. FAIL!

Why on earth would the Panthers draft Newton?

If he had stayed at Auburn another year he would have lost at least 3 games without Fairley and been a third round pick in 2012.

Why take him with the 1st overall pick this year???

Big deal...he wouldnt do interviews. He was at a kids football event playing with both teams. He has done millions of interviews. I dont blame him, how many times can you ask him " how will you do under center " How do you compare your self to Gabbert ? Everyone needs to quit over analyzing. Also..everyone on the Aj Green bandwagon...I dont see it ! In his bowl game he was single covered most of the game and didnt impress ! Julio Jones is better than AJ Green. I wouldnt pick a WR until maybe at Pick 8 or 9 but not at #1

Anonymous said...

Primetime is right. Regardless of what the Panther's Front office feels of Newton's character issues, lack of play calling ablility or his desire to be "an icon and an entertainer", this guy will fill seats. So whether he flops or succeeds, the Panther's organizatio knows that money will be banked because of drafting him. Season ticket purchasers will flock to the box offices and revenue for the team will likely triple to what was raked in during last years forgettable season. So sad... Best case scenario, Cam Newton succeeds, but will take his talents elsewhere where he can be marketed better than Charlotte has ever done any of it's star athletes for any sport! Trust me, his ego will compell him to do so...

Anonymous said...

So you give him a hard time for being cocky and talking too much and now you dislike because he says nothing.

Anonymous said...

R U serious!?!?!?! It is as clear as day and you even stated it yourself. NFL didn't pay for Cam to be there so he didn't feel obligated to partake in the interviewing processed. Cam showed up to support the kids and walk across the stage but it appears other than that is supporting the player's agenda. This says absolutely nothing negative about Cam. It's easy to get rid of that smell if you would just simply brush your teeth.

Scott, great insight. Honest and IMO balanced. Enjoy Manhattan.

I'm glad Cam Newton went out and tossed a football with the kids, and it was good to see Cecil talking to someone without his hand out like it reportedly was in Starkville.

But for those who think this is about the media don't wish to understand that Scott, IMO, just told us that Cam is not much of a leader and will not face the music following a poor game. It's not just about talking to him or Tom Sorensen or Joe Person. It's about his ability to interact with everyone: The media, his teammates, team management, Jerry Richardson and kids at an impromptu touch football game.

Say what you wish about Jake Delhomme - and I know many of you will - but he never ducked questions following a questionable game, was always accountable and responsible. That's part of what made Jake much more of a whole than the sum of his parts. And for those of you ready to jump on Cam Newton's bandwagon, quarterback is much more than touchdown pass and seven-yard scrambles on third-and-6.

How does Scott Fowler have a job? He writes like a 4th grader.

$cam has been ordered NOT to speak, because, when he makes any attempt to speak, he botches every word. He is stupid. He is illiterate. It is better that he NOT try to speak.

Anonymous said...

Cam Newton is still the pick. So get over yourselves.

Anonymous said...

Just pick Gabbert and the problem will solved. Hes much better and a hellava lot smarter.

Newton had one lucky year at Auburn. Auburn could have paid off some of those SEC teams to lose. Check the head coach decisions. NCAA D1A football is as bad as the NFL in rigged scandals.

WWE deja vu.

Anonymous said...

Just because Cam Newton passed on an interview with him, Scott Fowler thinks he must have something to hide. Is Newton supposed to kiss Scott Fowler's a$$ so Fowler will write a good story about him? Fowler is trying to make something out of nothing because he is pissed that he could not get a interview.

Anonymous said...

It is obvious that much of the enthusiasm for Cam in Charlotte is pure racial solidarity. If he is not the Panthers selection, it is going to be seriously ugly.

I know Cam is the hot topic here, but the idea of Sanders - who never found a potential tackle that he couldn't somehow avoid - calling anyone else a "fragile dude" is hilarious ironic.

That's not to say Sanders isn't appropriate for Fowler's column. On the contrary, here's THE ultimate summary of Deion's impact on the Falcons (from the column linked below):

"You were excited when he arrived, but when he left you were relieved. The glare of Neon Deion was so incessant he left you weary. He required too much care, too much attention, too much of everything."

http://blogs.ajc.com/mark-bradley-blog/2011/02/07/deion-sanders-a-hall-of-famer-who-left-too-much-undone

Foreshadowing, anyone?

(And that's even assuming Cam's talent as a QB translates to the NFL in the first place.)

Some of you might welcome such temporary excitement, a fleeting connection to a me-first Hall of Famer. Having lived in Atlanta through the artificially bright Neon years, I'd pass.

I truly hope I'm wrong. But I wouldn't wager the #1 pick on it.

You build around your lines. Cam Newton is not only a sketchy human being, but he is not an elite o or d lineman. Add in his desire to be an "icon" instead of a championship ballplayer and you know everything about who you do not want as the face of your franchise.

Poppy Sears said...

Honestly -- I could care less if Cam didn't want to speak to reporters after a flag football game he attended and seemingly ACTUALLY participated in with the kids. After working years at a sports facility that hosted many different charity/fundraiser/promotional events featuring some random collegiate or pro athlete and watching him or her just go through the motions with a "ho-hum" attitude this article actually highlights the fact that Cam acts like a professional regardless of the responsibility or obligation he is fulfilling. Whether it be going 100% every play during every game or simply giving it his all to make some random NFL sponsored event to promote physical fitness as enjoyable as possible for the kids who were there. Honestly, what else can be asked to this kid that hasn't already? Cool with me if he blows off an impromptu interview. Pretty sure the #1 QB prospect in the draft has more obligations than than the others invited to NY -- who's to say he didn't have some where else he needed to be? All in all -- the guy's a gamer, a leader, very polarizing and seemingly just wants to do the right thing and put forth a positive image for not only himself but also his school, team and hopefully for this city that he is playing in. Yes, I'm the f*&%ing conductor on the Cam Train...just sayin.

If Cam Newton isn't talking now, what is he worried about? And if you think this isn't an issue, this is not the kind of person who will be accountable to teammates. That will create major problems in the locker room, no matter how otherworldly any of you may think his talents may be.

Cam Newton = JaMarcus Russell Jr.

Questionable character - Kicked out of UF and his father was soliciting $$$ from colleges for his son to play.

Questionable work ethic.

Questionable intellectual capacity. Low wonderlic scores. Make you question his ability to adapt to the speed of the NFL game.

Successful in the SEC, but so was Russell, Chris Leak, Heath Shuler, etc... And yes, I know Peyton went to UT, but there is always an exception.

He even wears #2 just like Mr. Purple Drank himself.

Green, Peterson, or trade this pick. Drafting Newton is a mistake that Al Davis would make!
