My Panther prediction and other game notes for Carolina at Arizona

.

OK, quick -- tell me the last time the Panthers were going into a game with a record above .500. You have to go back awhile -- to the playoffs following the 2008 season. The Panthers had just completed a 12-4 regular season and Arizona -- starring Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald -- was coming to town for a playoff game. (The video above, by the way, contains 3 Observer writers' pick for this game).

That day went very sour, and there have been a lot of sour ones since. The Panthers have not been better than .500, even for a week, since Jake Delhomme threw five interceptions in that playoff game and wide receiver Fitzgerald burned the Panthers repeatedly.

Fitzgerald is still around, although most of the other key players and coaches from that day are gone. Now the Panthers (1-2) visit Arizona with a chance to get to .500. And since Carolina has no team on the October schedule with a winning record, the Panthers have a real chance to surpass that mark this month.

-- If the Cardinals don't help a lot on Greg Hardy crashing in from Carson Palmer's blind side, they are nuts. Hardy is coming off a three-sack game (although he has been sick this week) and the Cardinals just traded their left tackle and have stuck Bradley Sowell, a player they picked up only a month ago, into the starting lineup.

-- Arizona has an underrated defense, especially vs. the run. Did you check out Doug Martin's numbers last week? Tampa Bay's fine running back got the ball 27 times and only could gain 45 yards. DeAngelo Williams may find rough sledding vs. the Cardinals.

-- I think the Panthers will need Cam Newton to move the ball through the air to win. Mike Glennon threw 42 times last week in Tampa's 13-10 loss to Arizona and didn't complete a single pass over 20 yards. Newton will have to do a lot better than that, and should given his predisposition the past two games for throwing the deep ball to Ted Ginn Jr.

-- With the Panthers relatively healthy, rested and coming off the most lopsided victory in their team's history -- a 38-0 win over the New York Giants -- this game would seem to set up for a Carolina victory. But after watching the Panthers since 1995, I have seen this sort of game disintegrate too many times. I have picked them to win all three times this season and missed twice -- so I'm 1-2 picking them in 2013. here comes my first anti-Panther pick of the season. Arizona 23, Carolina 20. Watch the video above, however, to see that Panther beat writers Joseph Person and Jonathan Jones both disagree with me -- they are picking the Panthers to win.

Prediction out in the Desert: Cam is going to experience Desert Swarm! A low scoring affair is in the offing, so don't expect much excitement, unless you are a fan of Defense.

Carson Palmer to Larry Fitzgerald connects more than Cam to Smitty, so the Cards win with a full house.

If we get it handed to us after 2 weeks of preparing then its on the coaches getting out coached,If we go down it should not be because we didnt spread the ball around and Cam did not forget to pump fake to the opposite side before going down town to Ginn,It should not be because the pocket is closing on Cam in 3.5 seconds and the coaches keep calling plays that take 4 seconds to develope . So less make the adjustments as needed to be victoriuos...everyone needs to no you roll....coaches included.I know the game has`nt been played yet BUT THE PANTHER FANS AIN`T TAKING IT LAYING DOWN ANYMORE...DO YOUR JOBS AND WIN!!!!

CAM ITS BEEN NOTED . DO NOT LOCK DOWN ON SMITH AND LOSE THIS GAME,SPREAD IT AROUND THAT WILL OPEN UP THE RUNNING GAME AND DONT FORGET OLSEN,,,ITS NOT ABOUT 1 RECEIVER GETTING MORE CATCHES THAN ANY OTHER ITS ABOUT WINNING,,IF SMITH WANTS THE BALL TELL HIM TO GET OPEN, DONT WASTE YOUR DOWNS. SHOW HIM THE FILM SLIDES ON THE SIDE LINE OF WHY YOU WENT TO SOMEONE ELSE,HE CANT ARGUE WITH PROOF.

If the Panthers do not win this game, I don't believe it's a playoff year. They need W's from a game like this against this level of opponent ("mediocre") and in the coming weeks. If they lose, they should walk home from Phoenix.

Yeah Cam we need you to spread the offense! Stop being afraid of Smitty and look for other open receivers regardless of what Smith says!! We need the win!!!

Panther Coaches get a feel for how the game is unfolding and make the right adjustments we need this win.

"Cam needs to throw for the Panthers to win.." DUH, he is the QB, and we have the 3rd leading rusher in the league. Don't risk the QB!!!!! He is there to PASS

Carolina does not win after a bye week.

NFL Network reporting Panthers are coach shopping.

JER' can't seem to stop the leaks, sign of a dysfunctional organization.

How spastic can one team be. It is so so hard to be a Panthers fan when they can not get out of their own way. We suck.

The only way we win another game this year is if the other teams goes home at half time. Even then we will only be able to coach it to a close win.

As much as I hate to admit it we are a bad team,We just got it handed to us by a .500 team that obviously has a better coach that calls his on plays instead of having a offensive coordinator call them ,Hats off to him he did a hell of a job so did his defensive coaches.Looks like we may have a 6 and 10 or possibly a 8 and 8 team . Im not a coach but I don`t understand when our offensive line can`t keep the defense off our QB and give him time why didn`t we have a fullback and 2 tight ends on the line for max protection so we could of went downtown to Ginn which should of been tried atlest once a quarter?
