It’s time for the Panthers to trade running back DeAngelo Williams if they can get a decent price for him.
The NFL trade deadline is 4 p.m. Thursday (it was extended from Tuesday due to Hurricane Sandy complications), and Williams is on the market. The way things are going now, the Panthers have way too much invested in a trio of running backs – Jonathan Stewart, Williams and Mike Tolbert – and are not getting nearly enough out of them in an NFL that is, after all, a pass-first league.
Getting a third-round pick for Williams doesn’t sound like much, but that’s probably about the right price. It’s what Greg Olsen cost the Panthers, after all.
What would help the Panthers more is they could get Williams’ contract off the books and spend that money elsewhere – like on another offensive lineman. But finding a suitor at the correct price will be difficult, since it will need to have cap room and an immediate running-back need.
I doubt the trade will ultimately happen. In the NFL, trades are rarer than in most pro leagues. But the Panthers should pull the trigger on this one if they can. And given how little Williams has been used this season -- he again hardly made a dent in the Panthers' 23-22 loss to Chicago Sunday -- I doubt if he would mind a bit. (UPDATE: A team source told The Observer that at least one playoff contender has inquired about Williams, but head coach Ron Rivera said he doesn't anticipate any Panther trades before Thursday's deadline.)

Trade DeAngelo Williams to the Detroit Lions for DE Cliff Avril. The salaries work and Avril will be a FA at the end of the year. The Panthers can then make up their mind whether to sign him to a long term deal or let the stud DE walk.
Get anything? Yeah, right... good luck with that.
Get anything.. hahaha.. yeah, ok
Trade Chud. Still trying to run of shotgun, no playaction. Nothing that is successfull with other teams.
100% agree.
I agree, plus I think Steve Smith would be another good one to trade. 33 years old, has maybe the one year left in the tank. Making to much for a playeer his age, and on a team not goign anywhere, and in need of draft picks or players.
The guy has had one decent year - the year when Keyshawn Johnson convinced him to start working hard in the offseason. Since then, nothing. Has he slacked off? He goes down with the slightest contact these days.
Trade all of them!!!!!!!!
i agree.. dump the loser
Tom, push for a trade for dwayne bowe!
Really Scott? Stewart is very good but he is very injury prone. I would prefer to trade Stewart...as soon as we trade DWill, Stewart will go down.
Or have you not been following this team for the last 5 years?
No team is gonna take his fat contract!
This is what happens when your personnel and your plan are not in sync.
I know of no other team that is so mind-blocked (to put it nicely) about winning. I noticed Rivera stepped it up today, which is a good thing. Now, lose the shades. Do you wanna be cool or do you want to communicate?
Small thing perhaps, but it is all body language and this team has the worst. Did Landry, Knoll, Shula, Gibbs, Lombardi, Belichek, Stram, Johnson, Cowher or any other SB winning coach ever wear shades? No. They wanted direct eye contact. This team needs to see you, not your quasi persona. Do you also wear shades when you talk to people at home? It strikes me as odd and distancing. Stop it.
Would Hugh McColl go into the boardroom with shades on? If you miss California that much, then go. I am telling everyone again, this is a mental deal and not an athletic one. This team should be 6 and 1, not 1 and 6.
Also, get Cam a mentor immediately, as in tonight. By that I mean a real man. Hire Jim Brown. Hire Dan Marino. Hire Charles Barkely. There is no possible way on this earth that I let Cam jog off the field to find the corner seat on the bench EVER. I alone could fix this in one week.
This team is so frustrating because we all can plainly see what it should be. So can the players.
This is akin to watching Ali lose at boxing. We are bigger, stronger, faster, younger and we have no one of note in our corner.
If the league doesn't have anyone available then I would be happy to do it. I turn businesses around and if anyone thinks small things like your leader wearing shades and ignoring the top salesperserson alone in the breakroom doesn't matter, I will show you a soon to be bankrupt company.
I doubt Richardson signs off on it. To much invested and if a new GM/Coaching staff is on the way you keep your best players and see how the new staff utilizes them.
DeAngelo is and always has been the best RB on this team. He has done it year after year and is a big play guy, unlike Stewart DeAngelo has the big play ability. These two together when utilized property are the two best backs in the league. Getting Tolbert in the offseason was a huge mistake. This team would be much better off bringing back a old Jeremy instead of Tolbert.
I understand why folks think we should trade a running back, but why is it always DeAngelo that is mentioned. He seems more versatile, more explosive, and I think he has been hurt less than Stewart (I might be wrong about that). Can someone enlighten me?
I've been calling for the Williams or Stewart trade to the Lions all season. Both teams have a need for that position and it fits like a glove.I am a Lions and Panthers fan and would love this deal!
No chance Williams gets traded. His contract is an albatross and everyone knows we are desperate. About the only way anyone takes on that contract is if we are willing to take a 7th-round pick for him.
We're probably better off keeping the players we have, and hopefully we get a new GM and coach in place quickly and let them assess what we have and make adjustments.
Saw on one of the pregame shows yesterday that Bill Polian is ready to get back in the league. If JR really wants to win, he'll bury whatever hatchet he's holding on to with Polian and get him back here. Yeah, he only won 1 Super Bowl in Indy, but I'd much rather have a team that wins 10 games every year and a title once every decade than a team that never wins 9 games 2 years in a row.
After you fire your GM, I think the mentality will be just to wait the season out ans start fresh next year.
After the GM is fired, there is not much incentive to make significant changes during the lost season. There will be a ton of changes in the offseason.
D-Will is the best running back. You trade Stewart if anything. Tolbert plays just like Stewart. D-Will is a unique running back. Anyway, the team is using them wrong. D-Will runs to the outside and is the speedster. Stewart is the power between the tackles, and Tolbert is for short yardage and passing. Scott, what do you know?
No Scott, i think you are very wrong about this one. Trade DWill carolina's all time rushing leader? "mike tolbert" tell me what comes to your mind when you think of that name in comparison to "DeAngelo Williams"
DeAngelo is our best running back. He is in the doghouse with Rivera for some reason, and is not getting enough carries to show what he is still capable of doing. Still, we need more. We need a running back that is shifty and fast, not just a power runner. We have no one who can get to the corner and turn it up the field. On another note, we should be concerned about Cam growing up and becoming a leader before he ostracizes the entire team. He is a poster boy for narcissism and proved it again yesterday...his pouting over the fumble instead of joining the team in celebrating and congratulating Murphy on the recovery was sickening.
I like it! The idea of trading Williams kinda gets me excited about the Panthers again..
At this point of the season it would be a mistake to trade D Williams. Wait until the next GM and coach come in to make those decision, not a lame duck coach.
If the Panthers cannot / will not trade D Williams, why not make him the primary punt and kick off return?
Trade Smith for a 3rd rounder is Absurd! Idiotic and would destroy this team, I certainly would be Angry. But if they do, it better be for a 1st Round Pick! along with a 4th Round also! The same with DeAngelo, a 1st round pick or a 2nd and 5th coupled together! If they make any trades it should be at the end of the season and let the PSL Owners get their money's worth For THis Season!!!
