Richardson tells Panther fan that helmets will change, uniforms won't

Panther owner Jerry Richardson has long been known to pick up the phone and call a random fan or three that has either written him a letter or written into the "feedback" section of the Panthers.com website. Richardson is like that -- anyone who has met him on one of his pregame golf cart rides knows he likes to talk to fans directly.

The Panthers owner apparently did that late last week with a fan named Mike (who didn't want his last name used) from Winston-Salem after Mike wrote to the Panthers website that he really wanted the Panthers to change their uniforms since the team already has altered its logo for the first time since its inception. Mike is a fan of the "Scott Says" blog and had read this post about the uniform situation, which prompted his letter.

Mike says Richardson told him, however, that the owner was a traditionalist and that the uniforms wouldn't be changing in Richardson's lifetime, as Mike wrote to me in an email and reiterated in a later phone conversation we had.

However, this is interesting. Mike said Richardson also told him that the Panthers' helmet would change in 2012 but that he wasn't going to go into specifics about that.

As Mike said: "He stated we will see some changes in the helmet but wouldn't go into detail."

Now, the Panthers' helmet must change some -- the new logo dictates that. But will the helmet color change? Will anything else change besides the logo on the helmet?

That's the latest -- and maybe the only real remaining -- question about what the Panthers will wear in 2012. Forget about the uniforms -- they aren't going anywhere.

Mike, meanwhile, still wishes the uniforms would change, although he now recognizes that is a lost cause (all those Panther uniform prototypes on the Internet, incidentally, are fake). But he's a huge Panther fan and loved talking to Richardson. Mike said that Richardson's phone call "made my day, my week, my month and my year."

I though you said last week nothing will change besides the logo?

I wish they would change the uniform. Something needs to be done to coincide with the logo change. The new logo looks a lot more aggressive, and to match that the uniform needs to look more aggressive. That way it will inspire an even more exciting style of offense next year. With Chud wanting a HC job, he will be looking to make a statement next year. Jerry if you want me to design the uniform b/c you aren't happy with the preliminary design just give me a call, I'll be happy to do it for cheap.

I don't really care if they change the helmet as long as they change the FRONT OFFICE! Pay the money Jerry. See what you can do when you sign top talent? Giants, New England, etc....come on, don't go cheap on us for so many years.

Like I said last week, Ive seen the new uni's they are just putting this off for the big announcement. Helmets will be black.

I think they should at least add another uniform colorway to wear maybe for 1 home game. Maybe a primary black uni with blue and silver trim.. that would be nice.

If he's a traditionalist, he doesn't need to do much to the jerseys but really should make them all the same. How about making all the shoulder stripes the same? Cam's jersey looks goofy with the stripes making a loop around his shoulder/arm when most other players just have the stripes on top.

Second, a traditionalist would straighten out the pant stripes and have more simple color combos instead of two pants and three jerseys. Looking forward to a new helmet.

I don't know why the "Onion" decided to pick on the Carolina Panthers, but they did:

If you really believe those pictures, I have some ocean front property in AZ for sale...

All they need is black pants. For home games, anyway. I think that would be really awesome. An all black uni for home games. And it could just be for like one or two games in the season ya know? C'mon Richardson, you love your fans so much, we're all speaking out, we want at least one new UNIFORM!!!!

I don't care what they wear just as long as they win. Go Panthers!!

Spend the money like the Patriots?? They have 18 undrafted free agents on the active roster for the Super Bowl. And half their contributors were 4th round picks or later. That doesn't sound like spending money to me.- Brian Wasko

Tommy; I think the orignally Panther stripes on the legs of the uniform pants is aggressive instead of a regular stripes.Just saying???

They will just put new logos on silver helmets and remove the goat horn stripes

They don't need to change any part of the logo or uniform. They're fine- nothing wrong with them. None of the truly great, classic clubs with tradition (Packers, Cowboys, Steelers, Bears) have changed their unis- that's why they're classic and great looking. And DO NOT go to an all solid dark color uniform (ie- black). That looks college and retarded.

DAN SAYS:

NO SOLID DARK-COLORED UNIFORMS (IE- ALL BLACK). WE ARE A PRO TEAM, NOT BOISE STATE, THE OREGON DUCKS, OR SAN DIEGO STATE. DON'T CHANGE THE UNIFORMS AND KEEP THE OLD LOGO.

OH YEAH-AND JUST WIN.....

D28 said...

They can't keep silver helmet/black face mask w/ the blue cat. Detroit beat them to it. Doing that would be derivative and not to mention patent infringing.

Anonymous said...

Please god, no black pants or helmet, just simplify the current uni. Take the logo off the sleeve and replace it with the player # and move the stripe up on to the shoulder. Then change the pants stripe to a more classic design and change the blue to the new shade and then your done.

Anonymous said...

Also, if you believe anything Scott says then your not thinking clearly. This was the same man who last week said nothing would be changing. The Panthers/Scott are just trying to keep it as much of a surprise as possible, since Nike already undercut the team by premiering the new logo.

Anonymous said...

D28- They can't keep the current helmet because it looks to muck like Detroit even thought they had this design BEFORE Detroit's last re-design. Yea, your an idiot! Want to talk stepping on another teams toes? How about that Panther rip off black jersey y'all wear now instead of your throwbacks? At least know about your own teams history, your team has a tradition of Honolulu blue and silver, no black.

Steve Thompson said...

Just because he calls fans on occasion, doesn't mean he listens on occasion! The Uniforms are tired, boring, and most of all less attractive than over 2/3 of the league! Need black helmets and black pants to the combinations.

Anonymous said...

No new uniforms, please! I cringe every year when teams wear those hideous "throwback" uniforms and am proud to support a team that doesn't have them. Did you see Green Bay's throwbacks last year? The players should have refused to take the field in them. Enough already! It's time for the NFL to give that idea up!

If they don't alter the uniform design and color, it will be a missed opportunity. First, what about the change in the Panther blue. It is now a darker shade of blue instead of Electric Blue. How stupid will it look to have 80% of the jersey's in the stands look the exact same expect different in color. I hate our all-white comb, too. They don't have to drastically change the uniforms, but change the neckline, stripes on the shoulders and introduce a black pant to go along with white and blue jersey combos. Otherwise, they won't be capitalizing on any new jersey sales. I surely won't upgrade to a new jersey if the only difference is the logo on the sleeves and a slight color difference. I honestly think this is a ploy to distract the fans so they are "surprised in April when they unveil a new uniform and designs. They better!!!

I understand Jerry wanting to be a traditionalist and not change the uniforms. The only thing I don't care for in our uniforms is the silver pants. Silver pants and a blue jersey can only look good to someone on their third hit of acid. Silver pants and the black jerseys screams "I want to be the Raiders!" So can the silver pants.

There is nothing wrong with yalls uniform. It's almost perfect. There is no reason to change it. The number font is perfect.Pants and helmet match.

No black pants or helmet. Oh and I say this as a fan of another team.

Justin said...

I'm not crazy about all black... come on guys, we don't want to look like the jags... ugh! (I can't think of anything more amazing then matte black helmets though) I and everyone I've ever talked to about a possible uniform change REALLY want to see a new design, something to signify a new start.

And to the guy that said the great clubs don't change their unis...why do they all have throwbacks then... hmm

Dr. Jack Kavorkian said...

Go to the Blue Jerseys as the Home Jersey, and pull the Black one out on special occasions. The Blue jerseys are similar in color to the traditional Chargers jerseys, which are one of the most popular and likable jerseys out there. In addition, it's simply too hot during many of the months to be wearing the Black Jerseys.

Hey, I love the Black as much as the next guy, but I'm not the one having to wear them and they really are hot as Hell on the field.

As for the pants, something more aggressive, like what the Cincy Bearcats have, with the Cat slashes across the front and sides, in black. Just a bit more creativity wouldn't hurt.

they don't have to drastically change our current uniforms, but alter the stripes on the sleeves so they look better, change the neckline to look more modern, add black pants for when we wear white or blue jerseys, and use white Pants when we wear black jerseys. The white jerseys with black pants look really sleek!

I like the white uniforms, but am tired of seeing them worn 14-16 games per year (including pre-season). I love the black and understand that they are like "little ovens" early in the season. Quandry.

I hate our all-white uniform. Its so plain and boring, and u can see straight thru them. I just want us to tweak an already nice uniform, and make it the best in the league. Is that really too much to ask?
Jerry please follow this link and direct your attention to the first pictured uniform schemes. These would be the freshest uniforms in the league. You will increase jersey significantly, becasue non-sports fans would buy them too for their great look:

i DONT SEE WHY THE POWERS TO BE CAN'T SEE WHAT WE SEE. THE PANTHERS WEAR THAT ALL WHITE UNIFORM MORE THAN ANYTHING. BUT THE SILVER HELMET DOES NOT MESH WITH THE WHITE UNIFORM. IT GOES GREAT WITH THE BLACK JERSEY AND SILVER PANTS OR THE BLUE JERSEY AND SILVER PANTS, BUT ALL WHITE WITH THE SILVER HELMETS, THAT IS WELL OFF BASE AND ITS CHARACTERISTIC OF AN OFF BASE OWNER AND FRONT OFFICE1 CHANGE THE DAMN UNIFORMS

Anonymous said...

I agree with the guy above. This color scheme and design looks great.I even like the white helmets. Plus, this combo would make the blue and white jersey's our regular jersey, and use the black as an alternate. We could even pair the black jersey and black pants on occasions if we wanted to....then again all black, with a white helmet probably wouldn't look good. I do like these color schemes.

I hope the front office is listening!! The Panther fan base is ready for new uniforms! Black helmets, black pants, more blue! We have an franchise QB ... and a bright future ... the time is right! Think of the merchandise sales!!

Smoke Screen.

Why would you change the logo, the color, the font and keep the same exact uniform? Logically, it doesn't make sense.

Plus, if you ever were to change your uniform, this is the time to do it, when optimism and excitement is at an all time high.

Here's my two cents. The new logo is now mostly outlined in blue which helps it stand out against a black background. To keep our silver helmet with our new logo would look way too close to the Lions. It makes complete sense that the helmets would be black. Nike will probably change the number font with a minimalist approach to the rest of jersey. Stripes will be more slender and claw scratch esque. Pants will be black or possibly blue. White jersey on white pants no more! I have heard that silver will go away all together.

Uniforms are changing period. All the blogs and so called owner phone calls via one of your regular blogger fan's email can't persuade me otherwise. Logic always wins.

All those new uniforms look like Robocop, like crap. Best to stay classic. The Panthers blue jerseys look good just as they are except they do not wear them enough. A logo change is one thing. A uniform change is something else altogether. NFL franchises make a lot of money selling jerseys to fans and a poorly designed uniform will not help that at all. I am a Dolphins fan and the only change I want is to go back to the classic aqua jerseys, white numbers with thin orange trim, orange and white stripes on the sleeves, white pants, only have logos on the helmets, basically old school. It is fine to make the uniforms tighter fitting but stick with what looks good. Go Dolphins!

I swear people...is no one ever happy about anything. These message boards are getting beyond ridiculous.

I say go for a lean, mean look. Lose the logos on the pants, even the jerseys. Put the new logo on the helmet. All you need.

if i were the one who got the phone call and he told me "hes a traditionalist", but then turned around and said he would change the helmet not the jersey...id have to call him out and say thats hypocritical...because if he truly was a traditionalist he wouldn't change the helmet or the jersey...therefore if u change the helmet..change the jerseys too..damnit

Is it THAT easy to make people believe? Wishful drawings are NOT preliminary uniform pictures. SMH.

Nike will not change anything... it is up to the team owner and with league approval. Duh

AY NOW IF YOUR GOING TO CHANGE THE LOGO YOU MIGHT AS WELL CHANGE EVERYTHANG.WE TOOK A CHANCE AT DRAFTING CAM NEWTON AND LOOK WHAT HE HAS DONE FOR THE ORGANIZATION. WE MADE OUR POINT WERE HERE TO WIN GAMES NOT JUST PLAY THEM.AND WHAT BETTER WAY TO START THE NEW 2012 SEASON WITH A NEW UNIFORM CHANGE, IM PRETTY SURE THAT WILL BOOST UP THE MORALE IN THE LOCKER ROOM.HELL US PANTHER FANS DESERVE IT WE BEEN THROUGH SO MUCH OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS GOING UP AND DOWN AND BACK AND FOURTH.CAUSE IF YOU GOING TO KEEP THE UNIFORM THE SAME YOU MIGHT AS WELL GO BACK TO THE OLD LOGO.
