Maggette embraces trade, opportunity

The Bobcats held a conference call with Corey Maggette today for the media, where Maggette talked publicly about the trade that brought him to Charlotte for the first time. I'll write more about Maggette for Wednesday's newspaper, but here are a few highlights:

-- Maggette said last year in Milwaukee was a "humbling experience," where he came off the bench and averaged 12 points per game. His career average is 16.2 points, and he has usually been a starter, which coach Paul Silas said he will be in Charlotte.

-- Maggette, 31, said he "embraced" the opportunity in Charlotte and hoped to be a mentor to the Bobcats' young players, particularly Gerald Henderson, D.J. Augustin, Bismack Biyombo and Kemba Walker.

-- Maggette said he first heard about the trade while he was on a plane to Chicago to attend a friend's wedding. He was asleep and a friend woke him up to say he thought Maggette had just been traded to the Bobcats. Maggette was originally ecstatic, as he gets along well with Stephen Jackson and thought they were going to play together. When he got off the plane, he found out that Jackson had been shipped to Milwaukee in the same deal.

-- Maggette said what is really missing from his resume is a deep playoff run. Most of the teams he has been on in the NBA have missed the playoffs. "That's definitely something that's missing," Maggette said. "You can score 18, 19, 20 points a game, but it really doesn't matter if you don't get to the big dance."

This guy has been nothing more than a complete waste of great talent since day one of his career. He does less with more than any player I can name.

I'm being cautiously optimistic. It certainly looked last year like the last place Maggette wanted to be was on a basketball court. I'm hoping he views coming to an area where he has some history as a fresh start and will be productive. I don't think he'll ever have the passion that Stephen Jackson has, but if he can show he cares and reach his career averages, we'll come out ahead on the deal, as there's no way Maggette will amass the T's that Jackson did. I still think if Maggette plays to his career averages and the rookies can contribute, we should be able to match last year's 34 wins. I don't think there is any way that we are worse than Sacramento, Minnesota or New Jersey, and maybe not Washington either.

You guys realize that just over a year ago this guy had a 20 point, 5 rebound season...shooting 52% from the field.

Never seen so much hate directed at a guy that's put up 4 20-point seasons and is still in his prime...must be because he's a Dukie, haha hatas.

For all of you fools on here who constantly bash Boris for being "lazy" "disinterested" are in for a rare treat. This guy will make Boris look like MJ. He does not care about anything, and gives less effort than Peppers gave on the plays he took off. Release this bum, NOW!

Silas has the ability to get the most out of his team.

Just imagine what he could do with good players.

If they give him a fair shot, Dante Cunningham will beat out Maggette for a starting job

Nova that's a joke, right?

Look for Maggette to lead the team in scoring, unless Henderson continues his tear from last year. Just sayin'.
