Some significant numbers for the 4-9 Panthers:
1: In the past four seasons, the number of field goals from 40 yards or less that John Kasay has missed (out of 54).
7: In the past four seasons, the number of field goals from 40 yards or less that Olindo Mare has missed (out of 71), including two critical fourth-quarter misses in Panther home games this season.
12-40: The combined record of the four teams the Panthers have beaten this season.
16 -- Cam Newton's interceptions in 2011. Only Tampa Bay's Josh Freeman (18) and San Diego's Philip Rivers (17) have more.
26 -- Total number of sacks for Panthers' defense this season. Charles Johnson has nine sacks, which is at least six more than the rest of his defensive teammates.
28 -- Newton's total TDs in 2011 (15 passing, 13 rushing).
139.1 -- The Panthers' average rushing yards per game, which is No.5 in the NFL.
274.9 -- Total yards allowed per game by Houston, the Panthers' next opponent. That ranks No.1 in the NFL (Carolina ranks No.5 in yardage gained, with 399 per game).
1217: Steve Smith's reception yardage this season, good for second in the NFL to Wes Welker. Smith's career high is 1563. He would need to average 116 receiving yards per game over the Panthers' last three contests to surpass it.

117--passing yards Cam Newton needs to pass Peyton Manning for all-time rookie record.
anon @ 7:42--the correct number of yards Cam needs to pass Peyton Manning is 167-check your math. He should break the record in his 14th game..it took Manning 16 games. Yeah he has made his share of rookie mistakes, but to break Petyon's record in 14 games...I'll take that
Cam is being asked to do a lot for the Panthers. 16 picks for a rookie being asked to wing it around like he has isn't horrible. If you consider that most of his picks have come in chunks he has protected the ball fairly well for a rookie. He threw 12 of the 16 picks in 4 games. He has 5 vs the Falcons in 2 games, 4 vs Detroit & 3 vs Green Bay. He has taken care of the ball well in 9 games. He is still having an incredible year. I love hearing people take shots at him by saying he can't do things like Rodgers or Brady at the end of games. The fact that you even mention a rookie QB in the same sentence as either of those guys let's you know he is an excellent rookie.
Cam is a chump and would not be here if Luck had come out -
We never get a break
Cam will end up being better than Luck. I was mad when he decided to stay out but I wanted them to draft Cam. He has a lot of potential. More than Luck & he is very competitive. Physical ability, work ethic and competitiveness often lead to greatness. Cam has all three.
Here's a number for you--4--Points scored by the Panthers defense for the year. 2 safeties, that's it. A good defense forces turnovers and will score on some turnovers. No INT's returned for scores, No forced fumbles returned for scores. Scott, you should look up the number of missed tackles by the secondary-(I know, that would require too much work/research on your part). I bet the Panthers lead the league.
Zero--the number of punt returns Armanti has that are over 20 yards. All good punt returners 1st move is north/south, not east/west or out of bounds. Does # 14 not realize this by now? That's right, he is scared to get hit. If he is on the team next year, something is very wrong with this organization.
237573 - number of morons that post on here. Make that 237574. First post, go panthers! Give it a few years we'll be in the Superbowl again.
Kick Returners usually get to move straight North-South, but punt returners--who usually have to wait a long time to get the ball--don't generally have that luxury.
But let's admit that Edwards hasn't yet found the right balance between evasiveness and flat-out sprinting. This doesn't keep him from contributing positive yardage in every game.
However, anybody who thinks AE is afraid of contact is either blind or a liar. Look carefully at Edwards at the point of contact, and its obvious that he is the aggressor. He may not be big but he hits tacklers hard and gives second and third effort every time he carries the ball.
And Edwards isn't going anywhere but up; he's a fighter who will not let his size (OR the slanders of fools) keep him from realizing his potential as a triple threat offensive weapon. I believe the coaches see this and will help him make it happen--for the sake of a better Panthers team.
Edwards should have been a 6th or 7th round pick at best. If he had been picked then, he would have been cut after the first year if not during that season. He is still on the team as an attempt to save face. We can only hope that Hurney has learned his lesson on trading up in the draft and reaching on guys like Clausen that no one else is interested in.
The shelf life of runninig QB's is not much more than a RB. Sooner or later he's gonna get seriously hurt if the OC does'nt run the ball more...That's a FACT...And quit the Superman BS and the towel pouting.
I'm a Houston Resident and a Texans fan... That being said, I have read many positive and negative comments on this blog about Cam. You guys have a GREAT QB for the future in Cam. Don't expect higher standards than u r seeing this year. Y'all have a good prospect in Cam and the offense. It's going to b a few years to put it all together, but good things will happen...it seems.
I feel that the Texans should prevail, but probably closer than the line. We have waited 10 years, and finally have a great team. Carolina will b there in a few. You r better with Cam than even Luck will be. Scoreboard Texans 26- Panthers 21. Defense and turnovers will be the difference, but what other Rookie QB could put up numbers like Cam will.
Look at what the Texans are doing now. Once y'all get a average defense, you will be a Playoff team. I live and die with the Texans, but have mucho respect from what I see!
GO TEXANS!!!!
Anybody know the percentage of snaps that have been taken out of the gun? Last week it seemed to be about 90%....
I find it funny that someone posted on here saying "quit the Superman BS and towel pouting." First off, the guy is confident. There is no doubt about that. But this team has not had a swagger about them in a long time, possibly ever. So for someone to post on here saying that he needs to stop with the Superman BS is just being obnoxious. He is a kid right out of college who is the leader of an NFL football team and he does it with confidence. When you score 28 touchdowns total I think you are allowed to have a trademark celebration. Quit your whining. Secondly, the "towel pouting" was addressed by him. He said it is never pouting but more of a focus thing. He doesn't interact with his teammates a lot on the sidelines but he focuses on what he needs to do. Quit trying to find every little thing wrong with him because the reality of the situation is that if he is around for a while (WHICH WE SHOULD ALL HOPE HE IS!) then we are going to be a very good football team in the years to come. It also doesn't help that we lost our best defensive player, Beason, and another of our 3 great linebackers. When the defense is healthy, it will allow us to win more game with the high powered offense we have.
