As Cam's crazy world turns

How many times do the Panthers really need to see Cam Newton throw the ball in a T-shirt and shorts with no rush? Apparently, at least one more, as they have scheduled a private workout with Newton for sometime next week.

Not only that, but they still plan to bring Newton into Charlotte for a meeting with team officials sometime before the late April draft (which will still be held regardless of the current labor negotiations).

What to make of all this interest? I have two competing theories:

1) The Panthers are going to take Newton. All of these repeated job interviews are just making sure. He's got great size, he plays the most important position on the field, it's a huge need for Carolina, plus he's got charisma, he wins, they think the wild-card father can be kept out of the mix.... they are going to harness the franchise to Newton.

2) The Panthers want everyone else in the NFL to believe they are about to take Newton. Why? This makes his trade value higher. Newton is the most marketable asset in the draft (eight other teams have scheduled private workouts with him too). If other teams believe Carolina doesn't want him and is fairly desperate to get out of that No.1 slot, then why offer a lot? But if Carolina can say, "Well, we really want him, as you can see, but if you throw in a couple more draft picks and that veteran quarterback you have sitting over there, then we'll consider it..." that's better for the Panthers.

Maybe you've got another theory that's even more plausible and if so, I'd like to hear it. Otherwise, which one do you buy? Right now, I'm leaning toward No.1.

I'm also leaning towrds number 1, however, a part of me wishes it was #2. We could be better with a veteran QB and drafting some defensive help instead of a QB.

I hope for the future of this franchise it is number two. If its number one it will be a HUGE BUST, and will set them back years!

Chris Weinke was a winner who happened to play QB, which at the time was a glaring need for the Panthers. How'd that work out? This kid is no Vince Young. Take Fairley or Bowers and shore up our line. Don't take a 3rd QB in 2 years who 'might' pan out. Not with the #1 overall...

Rob said...

I think number one picks need to be a sure thing not a maybe, so I am hoping for #2, I'm not sold on any of the d-linemen (especially Fairley) and Cam Newton. Ultimately I'm just glad I'm not the one having to make the decision.

Anonymous said...

I'd put a 100 bucks that its number 2. There's 7 more weeks before the draft and every 2-3 days there's a new favorite for number 1. If you actually go back and listen to Cam speak and address all of his off the field issues, the guy is just a huge walking red flag- he sheds all responsibility and acts like a guilty 2nd grader in the principal's office. He also is maybe the best physical specimen for a college QB ever. But I think if you look at the history of QB busts in the first round, Newton is eerily close to a lot of them in many aspects (I'm not saying he'll be a bust, he's just a big risk). I think the panthers know they can't risk the #1 pick on that, so I'm thinking they secretly like Gabbert and are just throwing everyone off the scent with all the Newton talk. Everyone is talking about how Gabbert has a quiet confidence and edge about him, and apparently he scored close to a 40 on the Wonderlic. Just seems like a much more natural fit with our organization.

They need offense not defense. I don't really care who they get as long as they get a quarterback that wont crap out like Clausen.

Anonymous said...

I have a feeling it will be #1. I have been very impressed with Newton's work ethic throughout this whole process. I like him more as our QB of the future daily.

Anonymous said...

Selling your soul for this scam artist aint worth it.

Bruce E said...

I sure hope it's number two. Newton MIGHT be a decent NFL QB in several years! Right now Panthers need more picks and a solid veteran QB. There's a lot of excellent defensive players in this draft they need to go after.

Bengals. Carson Palmer.

Anonymous said...

More I see of Cam Newton, the more I like him. That said, I'd lot rather get a quality veteran QB, and allow Clausen and Pike develop. I still think Clausen and/or Pike can be that franchise QB - just not now. Best case scenario? Draft A.J. Green, throw Clausen into the fire and take our chances for the #1 pick (see Luck) next year.

Anonymous said...

Curtain #2.

Anonymous said...

#2, and work a deal/trade with the Bengals to get Carson Palmer here.

Newton could be an amazing NFL QB or a gigantic bust. With all the red flags that pepper his past, I'm leaning towards the latter, but his athleticism is staggering. I think I'd still be conservative and prefer a known quantity (like Palmer).

Anonymous said...

I too am hoping that it is option 2. Having the No. 1 pick is not about taking a QB if you need one. It is about taking the closest player to a sure thing. Newton just isn't as close as a sure thing there is in this draft. QBs get all the glory, but why take a project QB with the No. 1 pick when we need a franchise DT. If Newton is a bust, the Panthers are going to be set back around 4 years. I'm just not willing for the Panthers to take that risk.

Anonymous said...

They will probably go with #1. I always thought we should have tried to get Mike Vick when he was first available and we did need a QB. Even with his luggage he is a good QB and would have been pretty cheap. To my knowledge he was never considered which didn't make any since. So they probably go with #1 because it don't make any sense either. It is clear that Jerry Richardson is running this show.

Anonymous said...

I swear i wish everybody would stop dreaming Carson Palmer will come here he only want to go to the west coast he doesn't want to come here...but i do hope its #2 we need more picks

Anonymous said...

I got a feelin... that whatever move this franchise makes, it'll be wrong.

Anonymous said...

AJ GREEN OR PATRICK PETERSON. THESE ARE THE ONLY TWO SURE THINGS FOR THE #1 PICK!

Anonymous said...

I say get Vince Young, trade #1 pick for another top 10 pick and a 2nd rounder. With the 1st round pick get Julio Jones. I think Jones will be better then Green but that's just my opinion. When you hold the #1 pick there are so many scenarios that can play out it is hard to guess what the Panther's brass are thinking.

know what...this is the NFL not BYU, stick to March Madness if you need purity in your sports or better yet high school. Professional athletes make money, have egos, OMG ssshhh have sex and other things that might not go over so well in the bible belt social climate. get out of their lives and concentrate on what they can do on the field and what sort of teammate they are - that's why you buy tickets - to see a good product. AND let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Physical tools - no debate. If the man can pick up a playbook, if he interviews well, I'm for what's behind door #1.

some of these cam posters need a shower with soap and some underarm. yall stink. puuuuuuuuuu..

They need to get Bowers with the first pick and then hopw to get Mallett or Locker with there second pick I know Carolina traded the pick away but New England has a glutony of pick I an see them working something out to get there original pick in the second round back but I think Newton is not the way to go. If not then The Bils should follow my advice and get Owers and Mallett or Locker with th second pick believe me Newton will be ok but not franchise worthy.

Anonymous said...

I sure hope it's pick Cam Newton #1. He sure would give "real" fans that want the best player available for the Panthers a boost of excitement. The "best fit" for the Panthers is the player we select. Cam has skills and leadership ability to lead the Panthers. He will energize both the offense and defense. But you know what I'd really like to see stop is all the stupid strategy about tanking a season in order to position ourselves again for the #1 pick in order to pick the wonderboy Luck (a player who didn't want to come here and Cam does). Only losers or others who lack integrity would throw a season. With two championship rings in two years, we know that Cam is a winner.

Anonymous said...

TeBow was a lot better but rode the pine for the Broncs last yr. Newtons getting a glut of media plus his bros want him but theres better. Wait till 2nd round to get a QB. Take Bower or Fairley.

Buch said...

#1. Yeh Cam's a risk. But he's a risk that's extremely athletic, huge arm, can extend plays, is a winner, and happens to play qb. The Panthers have always been consevative and where has that gotten us. Mediocracy. Why not take a chance on him. He could completely turn this franchise around. Players like him don't come around often. If he's a bust, well then we can go get a veteran and continue being mediocre. His upside is too great to pass up on.

Unknown said...

i hope they pick cam newton hearing what chudzinski wants to do on offence i say he's going to fit very well with what this team want to do even jon beason want the team to pick cam over a defensive player. even though a good defensive linemen would make his job that much easier..wow now what that say of cam newton if one of the team leaders want you here!!!

Let me count the ways why the Panthers shouldn't draft Cam Newton.

1. Vince Young and Jamarcus Russel.

At the college level a large, athletic qb with a cannon for an arm can dominate their competition, however, in the NFL, due to the increased levels of speed and applied intelligence, to have success a quarterback needs to excel in his decision making. There is a maturation process to developing this ability.

Cam Newton can make plays at the NFL level, but, does he have the experience to control an offense?

2. The Jimmy Claussen experiment.

Are the Panthers seriously giving up on this guy. The guy they moved up in the draft to grab. Is it official that drafting him was a bust. If so, then the Panthers organization owes John Fox an apology for not drafting a player that could have helped him win games versus gambling on the supposed future franchise qb.

3. Does Coach Rivera really want to hitch his wagon to Newton?

If Newton flounders in his first couple of seasons how many 4-12 seasons can Rivera survive? How soon before pundits begin questioning whether the Panthers need an offensive guru to fix their investment in Newton? After all this is a career opportunity for Rivera and is it prudent to place so much of his career on one decision?

4. Which player would make one regret drafting Cam Newton?

There is a decent argument to suggest that the top tier of talent in this years draft are future pro bowlers. The question is of this group which one is a future Hall of Famer?

In my view the player that showcases the skill set and intangibles to be a Hall of Famer is Patrick Peterson.

Anonymous said...

He played at 3 colleges in 3 yrs. Rumors are he will demand free agency as a rookie and 50 million since he an icon.

Anonymous said...

The Panthers should draft Cam Newton.

1. Cam Newton is nothing like Vince Young or JaMarcus Russell, if you want to compare him to a black QB, he is more like Steve McNair.

2. If the Panthers draft Cam Newton, they can sign Donovan McNabb. Donovan McNabb is a winner and has been a positive influence for Michael Vick.

3. Gabbert isn't better than Clausen. When people talk about Gabbert, they talk about how smart he is, they don't talk about his performances on the field because if you look at his stats and performance, they were mediocre at best. Clausen is a way better QB than Gabbert.

Anonymous said...

I think the NFL will prove to be more than his athletic ability. If you watched him in college he wasn't able to run the ball very well against good defenses like Alabama, Clemson, and even Oregon

Anonymous said...

If they take Newton, I will never go to another Panthers game!

Anonymous said...

It is too bad but there is no traditional number one overall type of guy in this draft.

SM said...

I'm pretty sure that, unless there is a new CBA, you can't trade that pick for another player - only for picks. Meaning, we couldn't send it elsewhere and have an existing NFL player come to us as part of the trade. If we take Newton, then that means our 2010 draft resulted in two second rounders who don't play. Awesome...

Anonymous said...

I don’t see how any Panther fan wouldn’t be excited about the prospect of Cam. There is so much upside and the comparison to VY or JR are close minded. More like Big Ben or Culpeper before he got hurt. Rolls the dice and dare to be great!! Cam in 2011!!

Anonymous said...

He is too slow and reminds me of that other tall pretty boy QB we had a few years ago who was really bad and constantly sacked and he went with the Giants. They cut his hair and he was pretty boy no more but still played the same. They seem to freeze in a pose frame just like the picture.

Anonymous said...

I'd say #1. I think most folks here are afraid of having the "black athletic" type quarterback versus the traditional pocket passer. At the same time I know if they pick him it will take a few years to develope him and people are expecting instant gratification. But I do think he wants to be great and he does have so much potential.

Anonymous said...

Cam Newton is clearly the guy the Panthers should take. 1. We need a jolt from the ho-hum of the Fox era. 2. Newton has demonstrated a poise in dramatic situations beyond that of most current NFL players. (Heisman and National Title while under NCAA investigation) 3. He demonstrated leadership skills on the field, leading his team to the title, through the most elite competition, highlighted by the Iron Bowl game. 4. He doesnt get scared and mindlessly throw the ball away or to the opponent like Clausen and Delhomme. 5. If the line breaks down, he's big enough, fast enough, and experienced enough to move out of the way/extend the play with positive results. 6. Imagine a blended pro-style offense w/ some wildcat sets w/ Newton, Edwards, DWill, and Smith on the field at the same time. Fun for the fans, scary for the defense. 7. Our offense sucked b/c of the gaping hole at QB. Our defense was underappreciated b/c they barely had time to finish a cup of gatorade before they were back on the field. We need a QB, not a DB/return guy. It'd be nice to have a great db/return guy (Peterson), but unless he's the second coming of Deion Sanders, he won't impact the game like Newton would.

The comparisons to Jamarcus Russel and Vince Young have no basis in reality. Neither one of those dudes demonstrated the poise Newton did last year. And if staying out of trouble is the litmus test for a picking a pro sports team, then we should be drafting infants, b/c after the age of 2, you're bound to have done something some wacko will complain about. If you can get hired at a bank w/ a misdemeanor on your record, why shouldnt you be able to play football?

This is hilarious. You hillbillies may have scared Jerry Richardson out of taking Michael Vick when we needed him, but it's looking more and more like he's not going to listen to you this time. And he shouldn't this young man is a player! The Panthers needed a more open-minded type of head coach to add to the brain trust. Coach Ron Rivera, if Cam Newton is the best player for you at #1 don't let anyone talk you out of it!

Are you Cam hating clowns kidding me? GABBERT no #1. 90% of you get your opinions from ESPN or your local sports writer. Gabbert threw 16 touchdowns and 9 interceptions against soft big 12 defenses in the same spread offense(get the calculator), Cam threw 30 touchdowns and 6 intercetions (lets leave out the runs... especially the one against fellow first rounder Patrick Peterson and take away his pressure situation i,e. the down by 24 point comeback against the Defending National Champs-Alabama in Bryant-Denny stadium and the head to head whoopin he put on Ryan Mallet and the Arkansas Razorbacks( cause Mallet was to soft to finish the game!!).. CLOWNS get your heads out of the media's______!! I like the point the blogger made earlier about KIPER being friends with CLAUSEN's Agent (anybody at ESPN smell conflict of interest).. I trust Trent Dilfer who said that Cam Newton would wow scouts (not the so-called experts who never threw a football or played in a superbowl like Difler).. The media has made a lot of money off CAM mania, everybody has an opinion or they better get one if they want their column read. AND STILL CAM will go No#1 because you draft on POTENTIAL not outside opinions of the blogger world.
Oh yea you real redskin fans get on back to Donovan McNabb and Fat Albert Haynesworth. There are plenty of people to fill your seats, and not the cheap seats either...

why are you expert analyzers blogging? shouldn't you be off predicting the future, since you seem to be sure Newton will fail. Some of you need to get your dues back from the grand wizard, since he can't keep a black quarterback from coming to Carolina, might as well join the Tea Party and vote against sports in Carolina... that'll teach Cam to be so talented that the panthers would choose him no#1 on the NFL's second biggest stage. See you all April 28th;-)

Anonymous said...

I hope, I pray that Carolina drafts Cam Newton so all of you hicks can be pissed off for years to come. Never EVER has a QB in the draft who is a Heisman winner and National Champion and physically gifted like Cam been referred to as a "bust" or "scam". There is absolutely no precedent for this and no reason to start now except for one which I hate to even say but it is soooo glaringly obvious.

Go find another team and burn any Panther gear you have b/c real Carolina Panther fans white and black have been wanting an exciting winner as QB for a long time. Leave it up to Carolina "fans" to hope and wish a young blk QB is a NFL bust. How pathetic.

There they go again. Ignorant racist bigoted comments coming from retards with no education. Somebody bitch slap that punk.

What the NFL and all pro and college sports needs is DIVERSITY. Diversity is a 2 way street. The NFL is already 85% black and the NBA at 95% while most D1 college the same. The white population in America is at 75%. The black population is 12%. Pro-rata needed. Sports media ignore the disparity and imbalance.

Even with 85% of the NFL in all position except kicker and OL many racists demand a black QB. There has been a major push for black QBs and Newton is their man clearly when he is a scoundrel and not even close to best QB. We know also there is a lack of blocking intentionally on the OL for QBs they dont like. Fire these scumbags who dont block.

Newton is NOT the best QB in the draft. Its that simple. He is not even the calibre of good NFL QB.

Gabbert and Mallet are much better QBs than Newton plain and simple. He played on a #1 team. He was just one cog in the wheel for a few months only having been sold for profit to the highest bidder by daddy.

Percentage wise there are more white folk who eat fried chicken and "soul food" than black folk.
Who the hell dont eat Bojangles or the fixins and drink their sweet tea anyway? Same for KFC, Churchs, Popeyes or any other southern fried chicken joint.
Everybody loves fried chicken mashed potatoes gravy and biscuits.
Same for blackeyed peas cornbread porkchops and watermelon. Hell yes. Whites eat more water melon too. FACT.

Bottom line is in the end Cam Newton will be a TE in the NFL if anything, or go to the CFL, but nuttin wrong with that. Hes just not QB material with his lack of advanced education and deficiencies like passing and reading defenses.

I truly hope that the Panthers draft Cam, we need some swagger here and the potential for greatness is right there in our grasps. Our glaring need is QB and one like Cam doesn’t come along to often. Now as a white fan… these comments about not wanting this QB because he is black or any other backhanded remark are extremely embarrassing. If someone could benefit your life, job or favorite team just let them. Go Cam in 2011!

Anonymous said...

I guess the fans of the Panthers reflect the team's personality too. go for the safe pick. The sure thing. Sounds like the fans are like Fox. Take a knee with 1:30 left in the first half. A punt is a good play. Draw play on 3rd and 15. Dont take chances. 4and inches...PUNT! SO I a now know why no one seems to want Newton here in Charlotte. That last thing we want here is an offensive threat at QB. We much prefer a game manager. A QB to hand off and perhaps throw 5 yard passes now and again. A QB who can make sure that the punter gets at least 5 punts a game. We do not want a QB who when its 3rd and 5 must keep the defense honest becuase he can scramble for the 5 yards easily. Heck no. Panther's Motto -- never score a TD when a Field Goal will have the chance to kick a field goal. Or "Carolina Panthers, Punter and Place Kicker Paradise".

Please take CAM, I didn't know the racist !&%holes that i was cheering this team on with. If drafting CAM can purge this BS and allow us to repopulate the crowd that's just one more way CAM can move the city of Charlotte forward.

You do know the President's black right? LOL just joking...well I don't know do y'all?

Oh a little socioeconomic and history lesson on the prevalence of black athletes in certain sports. A. basketballs and footballs are a little cheaper to pick up then tennis racquets and golf clubs - hence the large populations in those sports. B. Not a lot of black people in cold weather climates, so hockey? not so much. That said (C) since your plantation slave owning ancestors decided to breed us to make better slaves, we are predisposed with fast twitch muscles to excel in sports requiring speed and power (see Serena and Tiger). Just a little more athletic and they get paid millions for it - poetic justice don't you think? Yeah....so thanks, i guess?

Forget the racist bums in the crowd Jerry - get'em out of the stadium. don't talk yourself out of it - the backfield alone will be crazy.

How in the world is Gabbert a better QB than Newton? Did you watch ANY of the his games last year. He is a spread QB (same a Newton), and he had a poor year producing TDs in the freaking Big 12...

2010 16 TD 9 INT

NOT an upgrade over Clausen.

I applaud those of you who have been fair when it comes to this issue. Some of you like myself want the best option for our team at quarterback so that we can compete. Then there are many who are just racist. They don't want Charlotte to be known as a city that is very racist, but their true colors always shine through. At first they insulted my intelligence with the argument that we have to have a quarterback who will be ready to start by game one. There have been many white quarterbacks that weren't ready by then. Let's keep it real. You just don't want a black quarterback. It doesn't matter how good he is. You would rather have a white qb who sucks than a good black one. That's insane! There will always be something wrong with the black guy. This is what happened with Jake Delhomme. I never could understand why so many white people fell in love with a below average quarterback. But the truth is you were just happy that Rodney Peete wasn't the starting quarterback anymore.
