Hansbrough does a Henderson on D-Wade

Did you see the wild, swiping foul former UNC star Tyler Hansbrough committed on Miami's Dwyane Wade Tuesday night? The parallels with the foul current Bobcat Gerald Henderson committed on Hansbrough in a Duke-UNC game were striking. In both cases, blood was involved and contact with the face, too, although at least D-Wade didn't get his nose broken.

Hansbrough and Miami big man Udonis Haslem both deserve a fine for their flagrant fouls but I wouldn't suspend either of them for Game 6, which is sure to be very rough too after Larry Bird called the Pacers "soft" in a postgame interview.

(UPDATE: Hansbrough was not suspended for his foul; Haslem was. Haslem's was clearly retaliatory, but I thought in impact no worse than Hansbrough's. That's why I wouldn't have suspended either one. See what you think by viewing videos below. As for commenters who note that Hansbrough was at least going for the ball on the play, I'd agree that he was, but it also appeared to me that his hand raked across Wade's face longer than necessary. And you could make the argument Henderson was "going for the ball" too -- albeit recklessly. In any case, it is true that Henderson was ejected and Hansbrough, although assessed a flagrant foul, has been cleared to play Game 6.)

First notable thing Hansbrough has done in his NBA career.

At least Hansbrough is in the playoffs and won a national title...was has Henderson done? Plays for the worst team in NBA history and will be living in Seattle once the Boobcats move out of Charlotte...Just sayin'

At least Hansbrough made a play for the ball, something Henderson absolutely did not do.

Correct there Scott, but you failed to mention the one significant fact about all three plays you reference...Hansbrough actually got the ball, unlike Henderson and Haslem. No question Haslems was intentional and in retaliation, which should in fact bring a suspension. But to protect the Heat and 2 of the NBA's golden childs, they will not suspend him.

Scott, the comparison of Hansbrough's foul last night to Henderson's foul in college is a stretch. At least acknowledge that Henderson made very little play on the ball and was ejected from the game in the Dean Dome. Hansbrough on the other hand clearly gets some part of the ball and received a flagrant foul. Also, comparing a blatantly flagrant foul committed in a regular season ACC game, to a hard NBA playoff foul is just plain dumb. It looks like our beat journalists are about as bad as the Bobcats themselves.

I hate UNC and even I can admit all three of those were terrible fouls. COME ON MAN!

What a bunch of ABC pandering BS. Hansbrough was playing the ball. Come on, Scott.

Yes, a scratch on the face is comparable to a broken nose. "Both fouls drew blood" is about as misleading a statement as you could make.

Horrible article. No way to compare the two. He actually played the ball, Henderson did not. Compare Henderson's hit to Haslem's

What makes Hansbroughs foul on Wade so bad is the fact that he turns and gives a teammate a high five right after he did it, implying that he did do it on purpose and that he was proud of it!!! Stop giving this guy the benefit of the doubt he is just as bad as Haslem in this situation PERIOD.

Henderson is a thug...D-Wade deserved it, and the Da Heat ain't winning any title this year...Bawhahahaha!!!

It absolutely amazes me that UNC people can be so biased that they don't see that the Hansbrough play was virtually identical to the Henderson play. Come on folks.

1:37, just like it absolutely would amaze Stevie Wonder that even you couldn't see that Hansbrough got ball and Henderson didn't even come close. Shouldn't even be comparing the two fouls. Now you could compare Haslem and Henderson since neither one came relatively close to the ball.

And 1:30, why wouldn't he high five a teammate. It was a hard foul. Similar to the one Wade made on Collinson, except Dwade is a little beeatch and complains when it happens to him.

Bottom line, none of these NBAers could hang back in the 80's/90's. They'd get pushed around and go home crying to mom. Just do yourselves a favor and go back and watch REAL battles in the playoffs with Knicks/Bulls, Knicks/Pacers, Lakers/Celtics, Detroit/Celtics, Detroit/Bulls etc....

Swahihi sure comes in handy for Handsblogh.

Anon...1:56pm. GED sure comes in handy for you...By the way, Tyler has a college degree and makes more money than you...Bawhahahaha

Hansbrough resurfaces! It's been a couple years since I'd heard from that dolt. First comment on here is right - first noteworthy thing Hanstravel's done in the NBA!

Didn't Henderson go to Duke? No wonder he sucks!! Lol...

This is such an embarrassingly blatant attempt to generate page views. It's sad when a once respected columnist becomes just another rabble rouser more similar to Jim Rome than Joseph Alsop.

The Boobcats will be in Seattle soon enough...wait and see. Jordan will eventually sell the team. If Tyler was on the Boobcats...he would average 20+ per game. The team stinks and will not get the #1 overall pick because they are the Boobcats. This is the Tar Heel state!

I laughed when Mike Dunleavy broke Cryler's nose AGAIN this year!! Hansbrough = poor man's Bill Laimbeer

I laughed when Duke lost to LeHigh...I laughed even harder when the Bobcats became the NBA's worst team ever...thanks to 2 Duke players that are worthless...Lol.

I laughed when I saw that Dook alums make an average salary of $185,000 and Tarcheat trolls work in "outside sales" haha!!!

I laughed harder when Rivers dropped a dagger on the NIT Runner-ups for Dook to take 5 of the last 7...

I laughed harder when Harrison "The Brand" Barnes goes 2-3 vs. Dook with zero Final Fours and gets a jersey in the rafters!

I was ROTFL when I realized that STATE currently has a better football team, incoming basketball team, and academic reputation than Cheat U! Enjoy those sanctions!

Anon...2:40pm. I bet you did not go to Duke...probably went to UNCC or Gaston College...loser. Lol

UNC 132-102 vs Duke (head-to-head)...who owns who? Last result UNC 88-70 duke...more to come this season...stay tuned...

@2:49, How in the hell could you possibly be jawing about Carolina's football program. The University of New Jersey at Durham has never and will never be anything but the doormat of ACC football. The entire program is a joke and most years would probably get beaten by Independence. Go Lehigh, Go Heels, Go America, and suck it Coach K.

Anonymous said...

2:29PM that's awesome that Dunleavy broke Tyler's nose! Did you know Dunleavy went 7-1 vs. UNC in his career?

Anonymous said...

Anon 3:03pm...Did you know Tyler went 4-0 at Duke? Talk about home court advantage...Lol...

Anonymous said...

2:49-Football, yes. But how can you say that about the basketball team? Because the "experts" said so? Didn't the "experts" name that dude Barnes you talked about an All-American his freshman year? Didn't they say he was the best to come out since LeBaby? Keep on listening. I'm surprised you're not curled up in the corner with your thumb in your mouth, because if State has a better basketball team that Carolina, the Dookies are in for a world of trouble this year. I heard K's back was acting up again....

Bruce said...

Coach K's back acting up again? Maybe we'll get to see him lying on the court again in a fetal position...Lol. The "word" on the street is he'll be retiring in 2015. Wojo's the next Duke coach! Bawhawhahahaha

Hansborough has been a solid sixth man, gets you about 10 pts, 5 rebs a game. I thought it would take longer for his game to translate to NBA style of play. But he surprised me last night with that thug move. Nevertheless, I would surely love to see the pacers knocks these prima donnas out.

Anonymous said...

Sorry Dook fans (Dahntay) and Hole fans (Hansbro)...the Pacers aren't beating the Heat.

Isn't Barbosa the Pacer's 6th man? Did you mean Hansbro was their 8th man?

Anonymous said...

The Heat may beat the Pacers, but they won't beat the Spurs who are on an 18 game win streak...Danny Green will be draining 3's on Da Heat..Wade has become a thug, and Mebron WON'T ever win a championship...should have went to college moron...Lol

Apparently UNC has become the land of NBA role players lol!! And I'm a Wake fan.

Any major NBA awards, All-Star appearances, or Olympic invitations extended to UNC players over the last half decade?

Anonymous said...

Anon 4:00pm. Wake fan...Do they still have a basketball team? Since Chris Paul left they have fell off the face of the earth...will be in the cellar again this year...I actually think UNCC has a better program than Wake...Sad. Just sad.

Hansbrough blocked the shot and then hit Wade.
Haslem missed the ball by 2 feet and just wacked at Hansbrough with both hands and arms.
Two completely different fould.
Haslem should be suspended.

Leave it to a Hansbro article to ellicit such polarizing emotions. Beloved by Charlotte/North Carolina, hated by the majority of America.

Anonymous said...

Duncan and CP3 are better than any UNC or Duke players in the NBA

Not a Wake fan, just saying

Scott, I know you loved all the hits this article got today, but I couldn't resist signing on and letting you hear it after Haslem and Pittman BOTH get suspensions while Hansbrough will be playing. I love it. GO HEELS.

Anonymous said...

Shane Battier and the Miami Heat will cruise to the championship! UNC-CH hasnt had an NBA All Star since Vince Carter! BAWHAHAHAHA!!!

No one's going to deny that the foul was hard, but Hansbrough made a play on, and got all ball on the swat. Wade was hit in the head as part of the follow through after the block, as an inevitability from the angle of the jumps - to say it was "wild" is sensationalism.

I'd say a "wild swing" would've been Haslem's WWF double-axehandle retaliatory chop that wasn't anywhere close to the ball. Pittman's elbow wasn't wild at all.. that shot was delivered with pinpoint accuracy in comparison.

I'm still disappointed (but not shocked) that Dwhine Wade didn't get tossed, or suspended a game for his blindside assault on Collison in game 2..but if he's not going to get punished for breaking Kobe's nose or crushing Rip Hamilton into the scorer's table, why would he be here?

The SBI is currently investigating academic fraud at UNC-CH. Think about that for a moment. UNC-CH is the most corrupt athletics and now academic institution within the NCAA. CONgratulations!
